“I was in love with what I heard,” says blues legend Buddy Guy about his introduction to the guitar. “I’ve dedicated my life to it. The guitar is the love of my life.”
In this 2014 episode of the At: Guitar Center podcast, Guy talks to host Nic Harcourt about his father buying him his first guitar from his earnings cutting wood, being so shy at his first gig that he got fired for not facing the audience, discussing “Strange Brew” with Eric Clapton and more.
“When I was about 16 or 17 years old, Guitar Slim-one of the greatest guitar players I ever saw-came to Baton Rouge,” remembers Guy about the first time he saw someone playing a Fender Stratocaster. “He walked in the door playing this guitar, and I thought, ‘What the hell is that?’ I didn’t even know what it was. It was this solid piece of wood sounding so loud. I fell in love with Strats right then.”
Guy also touches upon the responsibility of a performer to their audience, sharing his own evaluation for when it’s time to abandon stepping onstage.
“I’m a happy person when I’m playing,” he says. “And if I ever get to the point where I’m not happy, I don’t think I should go up there and play. I’d be cheating the people who think enough of me to come out and listen.”

The humility that these artists had is what is missing from today's landscape. For this man to say that after years of playing and inspiring generations of players, he still has more to learn, is the epitome of class. The world wouldn't be the same without his music!

Many years ago when I was but a young lad I played in a little basement band that had an opportunity to open for Mr.Guy. There were several other bands on the venue as well so my band and Buddy's band shared the same dressing room between our spots.The gig lasted several weeks. Buddy was playing a Guild Starfire thru a Standel solid state amp at the time. The great sax man A.C.Reed was with Buddy as well. I saw a chance to learn from a master and constantly asked Buddy to teach me. He never refused . He was beyond patient. He didn't have to spend his break time with a no name kid from South Jersey but he was the kindest man I ever met. He showed me anything I asked for and repeated things until I met with his approval. He even suggested ways I could do things better without my asking.Buddy held back nothing. Now I'm an old man and have spent my life as a professional guitar player. Buddy was my inspiration and it has been on my bucket list to personally thank him for his kindness that meant so much to me. I hope I get my chance but if not I hope he reads this. THANKS BUDDY!!

+prydonian460 he has a club/restaurant in Chicago, south from downtown, if you're ever in Chicago go there, some/most nights he's there, signing the CDs and performing sometimes, he's 79 already, so go and thank him, I'm sure he'll appreciate.

+Harry Harshimoto Buddy never signed my guitar (because I didn't want him to ) but he played it and liked it and I still have that 67 Epiphone Riviera . I do have several picks he gave me though.

+Harry Harshimoto Seriously ?? I had it wired from the factory with the Gibson Varitone circuit in it so it is one of a kind but I didn't think it was worth that much. I also have the matching Riviera 12 string and Rivoli bass all of the same year. I bought these years ago when I was still in high school and was working at nights at a drive in movie .

Saw Buddy Guy in a gig at the cafeteria in one of the dorm quads at the University of Maryland in ~1980. I did not know who he was. He played magnificently for maybe 40 people. At the break, someone invited him to our table and we shared a couple of pitchers of beer. This guy was so down to earth and nice. I will never forget that. Now I know how lucky i was to meet and talk to a legend. That's why I always say "still love Buddy Guy" whenever I post about guitarists. This guy is special, because he is such a happy, nice man. LOVE YOU BUDDY GUY!

To the 121 people who gave this a thumbs down I feel obligated to educate you. You are looking at and listening to one of the last living blues legends on the face of the earth. Once this man has passed on so does the true legacy of the blues. Clapton, Hendrix, Allman, Page, Beck, Townsend, Richards, SRV are just a few who site Buddy Guy as the reason they wanted to play electric blues. The good news is there are alot of young players today keeping the torch lit but we will NEVER replace this man or the other pioneers before him. God bless you Mr. Guy!!!

This man is the prime example of how the world has changed from his time to ours. He was tearing up just talking about the things he loves and inspired him. He almost lost his cool completely when he was asked why the blues aren't on the radio anymore. Buddy Guy has an enormous heart, just like most the other old timers, thats why their blues are out of this world. You just can find that kind of passion anywhere anymore

Years ago I went to the BB King Blues festival and saw Buddy and BB on the same night! Buddy is such a great performer. He was wireless and took his Strat down into the audience and let kids strum on it. Amazing show!

I don't get to tell my Buddy Guy story very much, so I am going to use this opportunity. I went to Rush street on New Years Eve back in the late 80's and was hopping from one bar to the next. About two in the morning, we ended up at this little blues bar, can't remember the name, and there was this guy on stage with the black and white dot Strat and just killing the damn thing. After the set, he comes to the bar and we start talking. I told him that he looked like Buddy Guy, and he said that he get's that a lot. I said that for a cover band, that they were close to the real thing. He chuckled and said thanks, After a while he get's back up on stage and I realized it wasn't a cover band. It was Buddy. I thought I was going to throw up. I made such an ass if myself, drunk and stupid. I stayed till the end of the show and he was so cool, not mad or upset or nothing. Just a guy making a living onstage and that's all.

Mr. Buddy Guy, a national treasure, modest, humble and genuine, a true Southern gentleman. He is everything the music industry is not. And look at all the years that same industry kept him buried. I'm happy the British Invasion happened and educated me on the blues. For those that felt it was a slap in the face, I say, all good things come to those who wait. Buddy Guy speaks reverently of the blues masters who came before him. The public acknowledgement of Buddy Guy's talent is his vindication.

i don't even like blues, but watching this guy play and sing, with all those years of experience and pain behind it, just puts you in a different world for a little bit. he has so much feeling and emotion in his voice and even in his hands, and the blues genre really brings that all out in the clearest way.

I'm a guitar player of 7 years.. I've been playing the blues for only about 6 months now, but I've always been shy or quiet about me being a musician when it came to friends or strangers asking me or asking me if I could play for them. This video and the way buddy talks about playing the guitar makes me proud to be a musician, and even more so a guitarist. I shouldn't hide it or by shy. I should be proud to be in the same "musician" category as Buddy Guy, BB King, SRV, etc.

My band The Smokers Blues Band got the gracious joy of sharing the stage with Buddy Guy this past weekend at Buddy Guy's Legends. He came up and did an impromptu few songs with us...we were in awe and it was amazing. Still can't believe it really happened. :-)

In 2001, I sat right next to Buddy Guy in his restaurant/bar in Chicago. I was peppering a customer with Qs about Buddy Guy for about 5 minutes. She finally told me that the gentleman next to me was the legend. I literally fell off the bar stool. I mustered up enough nerves to get his autograph on one of his CDs. He was very quiet and humble. In fact, his restaurant was named LEGEND. I planned my Chicago trips going to the Legend. The food is good and lots of people from all over the world attend and the great music is unforgettable! My last visit was back in 2018! I relish the Memories!❤

Buddy is such a humble Guy. A one of kind guitar player and he stragithly point out here that music should be for fun and joy.. When you dont have fun whlie you playing ,you better stop. I really want to meet this amazing man and talk to and learn more from him. I think more of the artist of today should listen to what this guy has to say. Im just a simple guitarist from sweden but ever since i learned to play the guitar about 20 years ago,my motto has been you shuold always have fun while you playing. Dont care about guitar brands and other less important stuff. Just play for the fun and joy.

I made my mum watch the first minute of this video to show her Buddy's poignant vocals and she loved the very thing about it that I did - his vibrato. She likes to watch his performances on KZfaq and enjoys his showmanship quite a lot. Now, mind you, my mum comes from a Indian classical music background and yet, loves the blues. That was an incredibly emotional interview. I've seen Buddy a couple times and he's fantastic. His playing is as pure and honest as it gets.

honestly i love how almost everyone now a days can get a guitar but it just hurts to say that playing guitar isent rele the most rare thing any more what is rare tho is finding someone who can play guitar well and has talent

My favorite guitar player of all time!!!! He is from another planet! Planet Bluestron!!! Lol.. He leaves me in amazement every time I hear him play. I feel he has put the FUNK in the blues! He bridged the old style of blues to the newer generation of blues players who he has inspired today. Jimi Hendrix canceled a couple of gigs to see Buddy play. Also he inspired the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmie Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and many others!!! I feel he is the best whoever did it. Played with the greats like Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Jr. Wells, Willie Dixon, T-Bone Walker. etc... God bless you Buddy Guy!! Way to keep the blues alive!!! Blues music will never die!!!!!!!

I mean really. What a class act. His perspective is so different from mine, to put myself in his shoes really makes me think. I'm halfway through my 20s and have grown up with everything from Buddy Holly to Darkthrone. The most old school rock to the heaviest of metals. I can't imagine just a void being there in my childhood. No beatles, no sabbath, no zeppelin. None of the memories of my parents blasting records. I started playing when I was young too, but if you learn young nowadays you can't help but be clouded by the rock star mythos. The money, the women, etc. When he was a kid that was just nonexistent. He played just because he liked the way it sounded and it gave him that feeling, the feeling i'm sure any other musician knows. That's a really pure thing, to come from literally a blank slate to the legend he is now.

seen him about five years ago at a casino show in Vancouver and when he came out in the crowd like he likes to do I got right up to him, patted him on the back and said "we love ya buddy" in his ear and he smiled right at me!!...That moment was surreal, I'll never forget it...

Up front I'm a metal head, but I do really dig blues players now and again. Buddy Guy is in my top ten guitar players of all time.

You should do man, whatever genre you prefer it's always good to look at the roots to see how it progressed. Blues is important if you want to be able to play things that sound tasteful.

A buddy of mine invited me to see him one afternoon at a small club. He fired up and people started to swing dance and the place went off! My jaw hit the floor. He blew me away. I will never forget it. I was looking around like am I the only guy in here that can see this guy should be playing to a much larger crowd. This is insane. 2 years later he was playing at arenas.
