It's at beautiful, honest and extraordinaire movie about love, simple and complex at the same time, and - also extraordinaire - a movie without real bad people in it and feels realistic at the same time. Great acting, great director, great review 💌

A lovely, romantic film. The acting is so subtle. It could so easily have been overplayed. This is one of those films that stays with you, even years later. If you have seen it yet, do so. Can't go wrong with The Film Critics recommendations. ❤

Thank you for another great review! I have seen "Brief Encounter" a number of times over the years, and I always enjoy it very much. It has been quite a while since I have seen it, and after watching your video I do want to see it again soon, if for no other reason than to see how I view Alec this time around, as I don't always view him particularly favorably. Although I didn't see it the first time or two that I watched the film, after several viewings I did begin to see Alec as a bit of a cad on the make. I'm not sure that it was the intention of Noel Coward or the others who worked on the script or of the director David Lean to hint that Alec was a bit caddish, but I do sort of see him that way. Of course Laura did not see Alec that way at all, and he and the story are shown through her eyes, so it's not all that obvious, but it did seem to me to be implied that he might be at least a bit of a player. Helping to set the stage for this interpretation is his description of his wife as being "delicate," which when this film was made was code for her being sickly or having frequent "headaches" or other excuses for not having marital relations with her husband. Another thing about him that made me question his character is the fact that during much of the time he and Laura spent together, he was supposed to be working at the hospital but instead chose to shirk those responsibilities. There are other hints as well throughout the film. I do believe that Alec cared for Laura, but probably not nearly as much as she cared for him. Anyway, I always enjoy watching "Brief Encounter" regardless of how positively or negatively I view Alec. That just adds to the interest for me, looking for clues. If I watch it again soon, I will report back on how I viewed Alec. 😆

Thank Julie! Always great to read your perspective on things and even though I feel Alec very much love Laura, then I do feel you have a great observation. I have to admit the first time I watched Brief Encounter I didnt with his character aswell, but everytime I have Re-watched it then I really feel sorry for him. I think she feels more guilt than he does, and we can both agree that he is probably a bit to flirtatious in the beginning. But I do feel as the movie moves forward his feelings for her is the same as hers and when he sees that she is destroyed by the guilt he understand he has to leave. Thats why I really love the scene where he asks for forgivness "For everything. For meeting you, in the first place. For taking the piece of grit out of your eye. For loving you. For bringing you so much misery." And she responds with "I'll forgive you if you'll forgive me."

@@thefilmclassic4210 I do enjoy speculating on what was really going on inside Alec's head, as well as whether or not the affair was consummated. But I am aware that such speculation is fan fiction. Since both Alec and Laura are fictional characters, neither one of them thinks or does anything that isn't intended by the author or director. They have no consciousness or agency of their own.

@@julieborel3043 Yeah, I think that is a good question. Like Laura says in the film - He is kind of like a child. So I think his motive was very harmless, and he just wanted to get to know her without really thinking that much about the consequences
