Brilliant review. I have 68 poles gathered over the years and my first of the NRX plus series has been in the form of the 901S spinning pole. The feel of the rod has forced me ( much to the horror of my spouse ) to pursue replacing most of my fleet of rods with NRX plus’s 😂😂 Thank you 👌🏻

100% agree about the 852S. I own the NRX 852S and my one gripe is the casting. I can’t cast super far with it, but I was lucky enough to get that rod for 50% off, so I will not complain whatsoever lol. Down the road though I will eventually consider the 872S later bc of this video. Would love the extra length for extra distance. Thanks for these videos man!

Flat out my favorite spinning rod! Mark Zona designed the 872s when he was with loomis. The thoughts with it were long casting and pinning fish better at a distance. He recommended I buy one and I will never regret it. Been using it for a while now, ready for another.

Just bought a Conquest MBR. Hopefully it’s near as sensitive as my NRX’s. I’ve fished the Expride and Zodias, and I disagree on the taping. I really feel like it helps my pitching to docks, I get more distance and more accuracy. Although I still prefer unfinished graphite. Cheers keep up the videos!

Yes, yes, YES...out with the recoil, in with the torzite... I’ve been loving my legend x (and its seemingly endless number of) torzite guides recently. I’ll probably just be adding more of those since they have better cork and balance nicely. If loomis/shimano would dump those goofy recoils, I would consider adding to my nrx collection. Torzite might even help balance them a little nicer. Maybe there’s some sort of magical rod maker’s reason but I can’t imagine what it’d be...

Great review. You explained why I didn't like my NRX 852s as a finesse rod. I just couldn't cast lighter baits as far as I felt I should be able to and your feedback affirmed my experience. I actually sold the 852s last week because I just didn't feel it was worth the money. That said maybe I'll have to try this one. I have a Dobyns Champion Extreme 742 that I have the same struggle with. Maybe this is the replacement to both rods, the Dobyns and my 852s. Can't wait to hear your feedback on the Whipsnake. Have you found it or are you still looking. Dying to hear that answer. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for adding yet another rod to the mix of my devastating confusion! I still haven’t pulled the trigger on my replacement for my Okuma TCS spinning setup. I use it for a bit of an all-around spinning setup with 15lb braid to 8lb flouro leader. Most of the time I’m skipping Senkos under overhanging brush (no docks out West) but I see you’ve mentioned this may not be well-suited for that application. I’m currently considering the 852s vs the 7’M Expride and now vs this rod. Whew! Thoughts??? Thanks as always.

Out of the 872s, Expride 7m, and the 852s... I'd say the 872s is heads and shoulders above the best. It's such an amazing rod. It's quickly become my favorite spinning rod of all time. I think it's way more versatile than the 852s (the 852s is STIFF) and way more sensitive than the expride. Plus that long casting ability is very useful. If you can spend the money, try and locate a 872s. They are getting hard to find though.

Great video. I've been binge-watching your content for the past few days. Love the honesty in your reviews. I recently purchased an NRX 852S but returned it. It just felt wrong when applied to my type of fishing. I'm a shorter guy and almost never fish big water. My smallmouth fishing is 90% streams and rivers. I like using spin jigs, ned rigs, tubes, weightless senkos, and soft plastic jerk baits. I'm currently looking at the Conquest 782S SJR as well as the St. Croix Legend Xtreme 2020. I've also looked at the GLX Spin Jig series. For my type of fishing, are there any rods that you'd give a strong preference to? Thank you so much!

I agree with everything except the K guides over the KL-H guides. The higher and smaller guide train is designed by Fuji to cast better with light braid. I'm sure if you put smaller KL-H high frame guide train on the NRX, it would cast better than with K guides when you're using light braid. I have a few custom rods built with the KL-H high frame KR concept and it casts amazingly well. I suggest you get the NRX re-wrapped with Ti Torzite KL-H guide train if you like the rod enough. Thanks for the review!
@PunchFishing

That would be waaaay too expensive lol. Thanks for the post. The NRX dramatically casts further than the Conquest in my experience. I'd love to see the conquest guide train on the NRX. Maybe someday? Are you on Instagram or anything? Id love to talk to you about guides.

Thanks for a nice review, Brian. I'm just starting out with smaller swimbaits (2.8" - @ 4") and swim jigs (1/4 and up) and was wondering what ranges of depth are ur smallies and how much weight do you normally need to maintain bottom contact while reeling slooowly? Where I fish they can spend a bunch of time in 15-25 ft., & although I haven't tested it yet, I'm guessing I'd need 3/8 on low end and 1/2 or maybe even 3/4 on the deeper side? Cause you had mentioned using 1/4 oz mostly (& 3/8 on occasion), and for smallies I'd think that wouldn't get u all that deep? I'll probably be best with a casting setup if my guestimates of weight are right??? Am I way off on this? This rod would easily handle 1/4 & 5/16, & maybe 3/8th - the rest would be baitcasting duty, maybe including the 3/8?
@PunchFishing
@PunchFishing 4 жыл бұрын
I typically use 1/4oz heads for swimbaits in 17 feet or less. If I'm going 20+ I'm busting out a 3/8 . I've never been in a situation where I need to toss a 1/2oz for smallmouth. This rod could toss 3/8oz if needed but baitcasting is a good option when you go 20+ deep.

I don't think Loomis has a great Dropshot rod that can also do general Finesse presentations honestly. Not in the IMX/GLX/NRX line at least, in my opinion. The closest might be the 822S SYR shakey head rod, so I'd take a look at that in a store if you can. The 842s/852s have very stiff tips which I don't particularly like for Dropshot. 873s has a much softer tip but 7'3 might be longer than you'd want for dock skipping.

Ex fast is a soft tip.... that's what it's supposed to be lol when under load, faster rods flex at the tip first, moderate rods flex through the whole blank. Ex fast means that under initial load, nothing but the tip will flex.

I own both. Two totally different sticks. 873 is much stiffer. As much as I hate to admit it, I use my 843 Conquest for moving baits mostly. It would work fine for lighter Texas rigs/jigs around sparse cover or open water, but the MBRs have such a forgiving tip, their action is perfect for moving baits. 873 is strictly bottom contact, deep water, or moving baits that require a heavier hookset like swim jigs.

i've been wanting an NRX for shakeyhead, ned rig, senkos (dont have docks to skip, just grass and shoreline cover). I was looking at 852s. I'm not sure i need super long casts to do what I want to do with it. Fishing lots of bluffs in clear water smallmouth waters, but catch largemouth/spots also. Typically in that 20 feet range with light line and 1/5 neds, 1/4 shakeyheads, etc. What lengths do you get on casting 852s vs the 872s? If its an extra 10 yards, i'm not sure that I wouldnt rather have the shorter rod. Curious what your recommendations are?
@PunchFishing
@PunchFishing 4 жыл бұрын
If you're fishing 20' of water or more I highly suggest going with the 872s. It's just all-around a better rod for deeper water than the 852s.

The trouble you are having with the balancing thing has a lot to do with the super light reels you are using. Yes, I want a light reel so the whole setup is super light but it doesn't feel right because the balance is off. A 2500 reel these days are 1 to1.5 oz. lighter. Throw 1 oz. on the reel seat and see where your balance point is. I'd bet it's in the ball park. A light setup is good but not so much when it's off balance and front heavy - very tiresome. Edit: Tatula 2500 is 6.3, try a Stella at 7.2 or Stradic FL at 7.9. See if that is more comfy. The heavier reel should feel better on that rod.

Oh I don't mind a little off balance on this particular rod. It feels really good with the LT 3000.
