I dragged out 10 Briggs engines to show the various sizes and horsepower. I prefer this to the torque measurement the new engines have. It took me an hour to get them all out and lined up, guess I know what i am doing for the next hour!!!! :(

I have a Popular Mechanics from the late 60's I believe, and it advertised a 5.75HP Briggs Horizontal shaft. I'll have to dig it up and see if it said a model number. Thanks for sharing the video! Love some old Briggs engines.

May have been a high output 5hp, that revved higher, maybe 4200? Tecumseh did this to some of their engines

The 5-3/4 HP, as it was also called, was same as the later-rated 6HP. It was a 14 cubic inch, same outer block dimensions and starter housing as the 6-8HP. The updraft "flo-jet" carb was unique to the 5-3/4 and 6. The rpm for peak HP rating was 3,600, same as the others.

The horizontal 4HP 11 cid engines are very rare! I have only found 2 (vertical-shaft) engines, one a commercial sleeve-bore, and one regular. They're scarce too. Never saw a horizontal shaft unit! The '59 2HP is not a model 6, it's a model 6BS, it has the recoil starter. The 2-3/4 is a model 8B, with rope start. Models 5, 6 & 8 were all cast-iron. They overlapped production of small aluminum blocks starting in '53, and until around '57, '58.

Yes, the 4HP model 11 (my short form for IDing it) is a fairly rare engine. I probably have 8 or so total of them. They seem to have lived rough lives though, as many have scored bores. My take on this is that they probably needed a larger oil sump to help run cooler, and many of them died from over heating from plugged fins. Since they were pretty much a bored and stroked model 9.3 cubic inch engine, I think the extra power helped to do them in over time, if they were not well taken care of. I have one that I plan to get running as a mower engine, since the bore is mint.

This is a good video. I don't know why KZfaq just now recommended it for me. I think the 4hp Briggs engines are much more rare than the 3.5hp engines. A 4hp Briggs put me on the road to engine building.

Yes, the 4 horse engines are not very common. Out of the approximate 500 engines I have, I have about six 4 HP lawn mower engines, and perhaps eight of the older model 10 horizontal shaft engines. I also have one of the model 11 horizontals. So they are a bit rare. One engine I have never even seen is a 6 horse Briggs model 14, those are like Hen's teeth! I do have two 7 horse model 17 horizontals. The majority of my collection is 3-1/2 horse lawnmower engines, and a fair herd of 2 & 3 horse horizontal shaft engines. I have a few 11 and 12 horse engines, but they weigh like 80 to 90 pounds, so they are good hernia makers! :)

Yes, we had a sad sack used 3 horse Italian contraption, a part fell off the back brake, so no more brakes after that, just running shoes. Plus it had a suicide throttle that twisted forward )opposite the normal way) so when you did a wheelie, you always went over backwards! Eventually we sold it to a neighbor who mounted an 8 hp Briggs on it, but it was so big that it sat off to one side. It did fantastic smoke shows, but the rideability suffered alot.

I have a newer (dont know the year, but it's "newer") 5hp horizontal that I wanted to use on a go cart, but 2 problems: it came off a generator, so it has that weird taper at the end of the shaft. Two, when I try to start it, it goes pop pop pop, but back out the carb, not the exhaust. I assume the timing is off, but I haven't a clue how to adjust it. As for the tapered crank, I may resort to garage butchery and "machine" it down myself (don't ask 🤣), OR go with belt drive instead of sprockets, chain, and centrifugal clutch. I have v-belt pulleys that will bolt to that crank, though they are not keyed.

I would take the flywheel off, to check for a partly sheared flywheel key. Remember to tighten the nut, or starter recoil to 50 ft lb of torque, Let me know how it works out. It could also be an intake valve that isn't sealing.

That last one is the little brother of my 16 horsepower with the generator/starter ( belt drive) of old..lol..mine runs great..I think it was off of a early 60s Craftsman garden tractor..I bought it at a yard sale for $10 back in about 86...it holds 3 quarts of oil...I used to have it on my air compressor back when I worked on mowers and such a lot...I fixed my first one in 1969..my neighbors gave me their old one a 57 Murray that they had ran until the exhaust valve stem had burned almost into from not having a muffler( leaded gas) and when I tried to get the valve out it broke off..I was 13 then..I fixed the valve and put rings in the motor .it was a 2 hp with a little tank..8 made an exhaust out of a half inch pipe about 8 8nches long and I didn't have a socket to get the oil pan off so I ground a 7/16 end wrench down till I could get the oil pan off to change the rings..lol..but I used it to mow for a long time..I think you had to hang the rope on the handlebars..seems like it was 17 inch cut..but I worked on mowers till 2018...I bought me a Snap on 3/8 cordless impact the last year..they used to have a little cast iron motor about 1 hp...I had a bunch of them..my granny had one during the war on her washer..pedal start..one of those will run half a day on a pint if the rings are good..

Sounds like you have enjoyed a lot of small engines over the years. That washing machine engine sounds neat, my grandmother had one like that. I didn't understand that it used gasoline, I thought it was some other type of gas. I guess it worked fine though, I wish i had gotten the motor off it when it was retired years ago! I made the mistake of putting a steel flywheel key into a backfiring Briggs, WHAM, cost me a flywheel and crankshaft, as a kid. Nowadays I could weld up and grind the crank, but the flywheel would still be a write off.

Well yeah I got my first project when our neighbors got a new pushmower in 1969, they gave me their old one, a '57 Murray with a 2 hp. They had ran it so long without a muffler it had burned the exhaust valve stem almost into...I was 13 yrs old..I had to grind an open end 7/16 down to get the oil pan off to re ring it and I made a straight pipe out of half inch pipe lol about 10 inches long and I used it the summer of '69 to mow our yard...the neighbors got a new one at Gibson's for $27 , an el cheapo...back then those old cast iron ones about half a horsepower were easy to find and parts too...I worked on everybody's mowers just about ever since...The weirdest one I ever tried to fix was a 1916 Kohler four cylinder 4 horsepower 30 cycle generator with cast iron pistons...rain had corroded number 4 piston too much from a valve left open...it had a solid brass radiator kinda pretty lol I got it to hit a few times but it was too out of balance but it generated at 1200 rpm I think so maybe that's why it was 30 cycle idk. It's funny now but way back they had pushmowers with maybe 3/4 horse motors on them and now they're like 6.5 hp..first rider I had had a 5 hp Briggs motor 27 inch cut forward and reverse lol

Would you be interested to write or film some serial numbers on different size models someday? I'm trying to write small study and guide for the horizontal shaft L Head. Specially from 60s to 80s, before the new style branding system. It would help to find some details and figure out the serial number system better. I example have two 3.5hp engines from early 60s and 80s without the cover. It's extremely hard to find correct information and parts for these without the exact numbers.

I recently figured out that my 100202 Briggs is from 1962 and off an old Snowbird snow blower. I've seen similar ones listed at 4 or 5hp, but mine is missing all its decals and I can't figure out which it is. You seem to know a lot about these old motors, is there another way I can figure it out? I want to know what decal kit to buy for the restoration I'm doing on it.
@ChargerMiles007
@ChargerMiles007 2 жыл бұрын
Howdy, if it is indeed a model 100202, as you say, then it would be a 4 horse. The first 2 numbers are the cubic inches of the engine, so yours is a 10 cubic inch, which made 4 horsepower. The 5 horse engines from the same time period would be a model 130202, and this be 13 cubic inch, making 5 horsepower. Strangely the 2 sizes of engine are the same external dimensions, however very few parts will interchange from one size to the other. The engine block, crankshaft, con rod, piston camshaft, and even the flywheel are different. The way Briggs made the different engine power was by using a different cylinder bore and a shorter stroke crankshaft in the 4 horse. The carb and gas tank will interchange, as well as the recoil starter cover, and the crankcase cover, probably the valves and tappets also. the cylinder head will interchange, but will result in either a higher or lower compression ratio. I have ran 4 horse heads on a 5 horse, and it worked well on a go kart, but I hear that for racing karts, the 4 horse head doesn't flow well enough at very high rpm, like 6000 plus. But for up to 4500 rpm it was fine for me. Best of luck with your restoration! Miles

@ChargerMiles007
@ChargerMiles007 3 жыл бұрын
The old (pre 1995) model 10 and model 11 4 horse engines are somewhat rare, I probably have less than 10 of them, out of close to 500 engines total. They cam out with a newer lawnmower motor that they call a 4 horse, but it is just a 3.75 horse with an eccentrically machined crankshaft and different connecting rod. the model 100... and the model 110... engines are what I consider the real 4 horses. The model 100... in particular seem to be pretty good, as they are basically a 5 horse with a different crankshaft, con rod and piston. They seem to have lots of reserve cooling capacity, so they don't overhear and score the cylinder as often. The model 110... is kind of the opposite, a bored and stroked 3,5 horse, but it didn't have the excess cooling ability, so they seem to score up the cylinder, if the cooling fins get plugged. Let me know if you need some specific info about them, like bore and stroke etc., and I can look it up for you.

How did they decide when to use an updraft carb, sidedraft carb, or downdraft carb? If you use the appropriate intake manifold, can you swap from one type to another? Would that affect the power output?
@ChargerMiles007
@ChargerMiles007 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you could swap the carb out, I use 8 horse size Tecumseh carbs on some of my multi cylinder engines, and they seem to run fine, so I don't think carb type matters, as long as it is sized approximately correctly.

Type "Briggs and Stratton model year identification" into goggle search. It should direct you to the Briggs website, they give an explanation of their numbering system. You need to locate either an ID plate, or the numbers stamped into the sheet metal cooling shroud. Hope this helps. I have a vid on the subject, I made it about 10 years ago. A youtuber SuperKonr explained it to me, so i thought I would pass along the useful knowledge.

Question, is the pull rope actually rotating the crankshaft of the engine, when you pull it? (Is the output shaft rotating) If it is rotating the crankshaft there are many reasons why it isn't starting up. These would be too long for a comment, so I will make a vid regarding this. Miles

That sounds tricky! You need some type of Master con rod interchange manual, which I am guessing does not exist. that would be great if it did exist though! Even racing (or heavy duty) parts for engines such as the Briggs Raptor go kart racing engine seem to be getting very hard to find. You can order expensive billet con rods and such for them (if they are still in stock). My personal suggestion is that if you think you will need such parts as a spare con rod or piston rings for an old engine like this, buy them now, as they may dwindle in availability soon. Briggs filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy a while back, and I have to wonder if the Bean counters are not busy cutting the massive parts inventory by stopping making the older parts, it wouldn't surprise me. Best of luck in your con rod search.
