Rebuilding a $25 Briggs Flathead 5HP Engine

In this episode, I rebuild an old Briggs that lived it's entire life on a go kart. There's scoring on the cylinder wall and lots of sludge in the crankcase. I hone the cylinder in two stages, first with a coarse grit and then with a fine grit, lap the valve, and reseal the engine with RTV.

You have to use an actual gasket on the pto cover. There are three standard sizes to set your cranks end play. Just using rtv and you probably can’t turn the crank at all. That’s probably why you don’t have a video of it running

Most likely it needs a valve guide job.

@15:02 vent upside down? Question: are the crankshafts the same between a Horizontal and a Vert motor? I got a great lawnmower engine but I need a go cart motor and I can get a H-mount block for cheaper than a entire motor. All my stuff could transfer over? Ive done the Vert to H modes (cutting a new oil groove on top of crank bore and filling the old one, crank slinger off rod end, governor delete and new oil fill) but Im not sure how the springs get oiled.

Go check at scrap yards I got 2 for $40 and they fired off starting fluid.

im not really sure what your trying to ask but briggs cranks will sometimes interchange but not always you can covert a vertical shaft to horizontal shaft but with some work but it wont last long briggs horizontal shaft engines just dont oil very good and they lose comression due to ring wear very quickly when theyre used for a gocart but relax you have better options tecumseh isnt a better option the carb bowls on those tend to get stuck and not allow the needle valve to close and theyre expensive and hard to find but real hondas and honda clones are readily available and have great aftermarket my suggestion is to leave your briggs on your lawn equipment and spend the money for a legitimate honda engine theyre good and most of the clone hop up parts work on real honda engines
