holy shit dude! that engine kept up the whole 3 minutes without melting a piston or something crazy like that! very nice
@upsidedowndog12567 жыл бұрын
That ran far longer than the dragster engines specifically built for nitro. Those run under power for 4 seconds, the crankshaft turning less than 1000 revolutions, and then are totally rebuilt.

Hell yeah...when I used too move the lawn where I lived a few years ago I had a string to the gouvernor...when I run over some nasty tussocks of grass I pulled the string and the B&S gave up a roar and cutted grass, moss, feet...just everything...
@unceli14 жыл бұрын
When I was 12, I got a B&S horizontal-shaft to play with. I bolted it to a bench and played. It ended when I taped an oxygen hose to the carb. There are still pieces in the garage walls-but it wailed for a little while!

I like the way the plastic sheathing burns off the throttle cable just in front of the exhaust.

@michaelmurray71996 жыл бұрын
john cox if you pump nitromethane into the engine at about 1.5 gallons a second, with about 60 psi of boost pressure, that'll give you a pretty big explosion.

many years ago i read up on nitro. it losses ability to make lots of power in a small combustion chamber. because nitro needs a very high air to fuel ratio. close to 1: 1.5

i ran a lawnmover on 50/50 petrol methanol It was old and the grass to high for it until i ran it on that mix :P very nice smell and good sound of it... :D

Nem is also completely correct, yes there is no external load, so there is no net power. But since it is spinning there is power at work
@MarcusDrall14 жыл бұрын
Our Generators Muffler will do this after about an hour of running. You can always find the damn thing by looking for the red glow of the muffler.

Did you open up the carbs main jet?
@bernard240vdc14 жыл бұрын
for starting the small rc engines you connecteda 1.5 volt no 6 cell to the glow plug then a few drops of fuel in the exhsaust ports for priming and then flip the prop with your finger once running you diconnected the battery from the glow plug these engines where two stroke and ran around 15.000 to 20.000 rpm i think they also made pure diesel and spark ignition rc engines they where probably more cosly
@Driewer16 жыл бұрын
sweet, did you have to tinker with the carb so it ran right? or just dump it in and go?
@mageac14 жыл бұрын
@53Poot the ignition system on a top fuel car only works to keep the engine running when its cool, during a run, the last 3/4 of the run, its dieseling and all the nitro rc engines run diesel cycle
@petrolnut16 жыл бұрын
Awesome! you should put the briggs on a go-kart and do that! I'll be restoring an engine in a few weeks and i'm gonna fill the tank with nitro n petrol too!
@enzochoi9233 жыл бұрын
this is a terrible idea... I love it!
@mageac13 жыл бұрын
@53Poot actuly the top fuelers burn out their plugs and end up dieseling about 1/2 track or so... the heat in the combustion chamber is enough to self ignite the fuel and nitro rc engines run on the diesel cycle as well... no ignitions at all, just glow plugs to help start them
@Duckyistrippin13 жыл бұрын
@naturalyshocked dont get your nitro's mixed up. nitrous is an oxidizer, nitromethane just contains its own oxygen. nitromethane is injected at about 8x the rate that same engine would consume of gasoline. hydrazine is fun. be careful :)
@predxene12 жыл бұрын
Well by the looks of the red hot exhaust; the piston is glazed, the rings are fried, and the cylinder walls are completely scored to hell.

@benrobinson72 reread my post. I said "Never seen a four stroke briggs?" as a question directed towards v8motorheader. I learned about four stroke engines on a Briggs and Stratton in high school. some other guy said it was a two stroke and I was replying.
@bernard240vdc14 жыл бұрын
i would agree with mageac about a lot of the small rc engines i tinkered with these when i was young yes they do run on fuel very similar to nitro if not actual nitro and once running the heat of the explosions kept the glow plug hot enough to ignite the following fuel charges maybe it was not quite a diesel cycle where air compression just itself raises the air temp high enough it was more the fuel burning hot enough to keep the glow plug hot near incandescent
@BUNCHofxs14 жыл бұрын
a briggs would melt before it would blow up, gotta love em.
@darkraft1003 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are extremly durable, if you change the oil, people that say that briggs are junk are idiots, they don't change the oil ever, and then they get mad that the engine blowned up

my 3hp briggs on a cheap gokart had sparks flying out of the exaust. that was months before the carb said "fuck this. im out."
@crazyrog1716 жыл бұрын
you can see that bolt spinning.
@stephenjray198811 жыл бұрын
ur killing that engine the sparks coming out of the exhaust is metal lol
@KennonHaneline11 жыл бұрын
ok, loose carb explains the changing mixture. no load explains the excess vibration and loose carb. So, add a load and watch the nitro start making real heat. 100% nitro can reach 7000 degrees under full load. That will melt an un-coated aluminum piston in seconds. however, the crank will exit the block before that happens. Nitro also likes 65 degree BTDC timing. Nitro is just fuel. still needs air, spark, cam, and perfect timing to match the rpm and load.
@doomsd4614 жыл бұрын
That cable you had running to the carb, later in the video, it falls in front of the exhaust and the black coating melted off. Look at 2:54 and you will see the line over the exhaust has the black coating melted off...
@quevicular9 жыл бұрын
OOppps, looks like the muffler is burning the throttle cable. Better get a new motor for the throttle cable.
@fullboostturbo19 жыл бұрын
ChiefJustice Middleton IKR heaps cheaper than buying a throttle cable LMAO. I priced a brand new carby for a briggs and it costs $70 So why would I buy a Carby when I could buy a brand new motor for $150 I mean if the parts come gold plated I could understand it ROFL.
@racer7748 жыл бұрын
+fullboostturbo1 - Unless the carburetor was actually *broken*, stolen or corroded beyond repair, they are quite simple to rebuild. That being said, why would anyone buy a carburetor for a Briggs otherwise? I agree with you on the gold plated thing though!
@shovelheezy11 жыл бұрын
Put the carb back on, dump some gas in, then go mow the lawn with it! Those engines are tough little bastards!
@pivotboy6313 жыл бұрын
@mambacx vertical shaft engines have an aluminum flywheel which doesnt have enough mass to act as a real flywheel, the blade acts as the flywheel cause it has more mass
@timswift214 жыл бұрын
the 3 horse power engines never had enough power to mow a lawn that was over 3 inches tall. today i have a 4 1/2 horsepower, and it has enough power to cut my lawn (if it could be called a lawn)
@f00barbob12 жыл бұрын
Towards the end, I think it was running more on the burning metal than the nitro....
@thumasta66614 жыл бұрын
should have threw some water on it and watched it explode!! the sparks coming out of it was probably the sound deadening material inside the muffler, but in my experience the first things to cook inside the engine from overheating are the spark plug and/or the piston... and if that happened it would have died very abruptly.
@roda13510 жыл бұрын
I thought it would self-destruct.
@Omegadoomship9 жыл бұрын

If it was the same Nitro Methane Mixture used in a Kieth Black Hemi a different result would have been posted.
@racer7748 жыл бұрын
+HawkEyes Moments (Dave) - That was certainly due to either an assembly or manufacturing error. Briggs' always last if they are assembled properly and maintained reasonably well. Tecumseh engines weren't bad but I still prefer the Briggs any day.

@f00barbob12 жыл бұрын
But I do agree that side valves are severely dated. Compression ratio suffers somewhat, but the centered spark plug doesn't hurt.

come on people its just a bit of fun with a lawn mower engine!!! not like its a rare vintage car or something!
@DRNEGOLICIS15 жыл бұрын
it will run on it but like that one guy said straight pipe it to disapate heat and put a glow plug cuz the spark plug will melt and change shape and the gap will open i know it from experience and by the way your exhaust valve is over heating and sticking open if your not careful you will melt the camshaft if it has the plastic one
@1polaricat15 жыл бұрын
briggsand stratton are UNSTOPABLE!!!
@m4xwellmurd3r16 жыл бұрын
Nitromethane is HIGHLY flammable. top fuel drags run I think a mixture of 90% nitro and 10% alcohol. it'll burn up your engine though which you can see happen in this vid when the engine starts shooting sparks out of the exhaust.
@SpikeZeek14 жыл бұрын
you made an air pump turbine
@naturalyshocked13 жыл бұрын
yep, if it really went on nitro, the jet nozle should be something like 8 times bigger. atleast from what i have understood, a dragster uses 8 times the fuel amount per stroke vs a normal car. and nitro having a oxidizer built in.
@Thenerfdog13 жыл бұрын
for a 3hp motor that is pretty damn good but yea it s just a little tom hot lol
@zup95715 жыл бұрын
98% nitro, 2% Methanol
@jbat353514 жыл бұрын
You are quite wrong. Horse power is a measurement of lb's per foot. Granted it might be very low, the fact that the motor is running and the output shaft is spinning means there is power being generated. There is a law called the conservation of energy. That means for every little bit of power, the same will come out. Most is lost to friction, and the rest is sent out. That means that since the motor runs, there is energy at work. This is essentially generating horsepower.
