Thanks to Wraithclaw and JayFeather09! They pointed out to me that (according to Warriors wiki), Kate made a comment on Facebook at some point saying his name is because one of his whiskers is “whiter, longer, and thicker than all of the others.” This does appear to be supported by the official website’s current reference image of him (see 2:13) I do hold my claim that his name doesn’t make sense because whiskers are like hair on cats, and can fall out and be replaced with new ones all the time, meaning it would be weird for his mother to notice that and have it still apply to his appearance when he is a full grown warrior. BUT I do think this is the most likely explanation we get in the upcoming Super Edition when it comes time for his ceremony.

In the Norwegian translations, he is actually named Halfwhisker, which I choose to interpret as him having abnormally short whiskers. It's almost poetic that his leader name becomes Halfstar, given the circumstances of his leadership (and how crappy he is as a leader)

I don't think longtail being named longkit as a kit is that bad. I mean, talltail was named as a kit for his tall tail, so why couldn't longtail?

Yellowkit was named after her teeth, which I’m assuming were always yellow and protruding a bit :) and in the art at 2:13, Onestar has one whisker that is longer and curves!

(For the context, Onewhisker warrior name is just "Whisker" in french, but then, when he became warrior, instead of becoming Whiskerstar, they decided to match Onestar, so we got Solitarystar. When I read that, I didn't know about his english name, and I think most french reader don't know either, so it's really conusing)

Being born as a lone kit would have been perfect, but our next go-to would be that he was born really sickly, and he (metaphorically) only held on by a whisker or was a whisker's breadth from death. It would have to have been a name given with the intention to name him Onewhisker eventually, but that doesn't seem like an unreasonable or unrealistic thing.

I liked when the names of the warriors were based about their aperence like Redtail or blackfoot because was more fun imagine the characters but its weird think their names as kits, why not have more cats that change completly their names like nightheart. Imagine this epic scenario when a young aprentice with a generic name save his clan in a epic way and they name them after that

The best thing about Onewhiskers name is the translations into different languages. Even the translators had no idea how to translate it so it would still make sense😂 In the german books for example, they name him "Kurzbart" "Kurz" = short, "bart"= beard So translated back, he would be called Shortbeard😂 Tho I think they went with beard because there is no proper translation for "whisker" other than "Schnurrhaar/Tasthaar" which sounds fairly stupid in context. Also, "Kurzstern" aka. "Shortstar" didnt save anyone on the boat here.

There are more cats that have unnatural names that...don't make sense. One of my gripes is the dark forest cat Maggottail.. either someone changed his name as a warrior before or after his death, or one theory I like is Maggottail was born extremely sick and almost maggot infested, leading to his mother giving him a cruel name. Another past name I never thought made sense: kits named after their eye colors. It's SOMEWHAT argued yellowfang/yellowkit was named after her yellow orange eyes but...the thing is, kittens don't even open their eyes untill two weeks after their birth. And the queens typically name their kittens within 2 days of being born.

If Brokenkit was named after Yellowfang's broken heart, then it could be that Tornkit was named for similar reasons, maybe for his mother's torn heart? I'm sure there could be a reason for it. Maybe, as an example of a backstory, his birth caused his mother to be torn between two worlds; she had to choose whether to stay with the clan and her new kit, or run off like she had been wanting to do?

Something I see pretty often fostering kittens... they will chew off their littermates whiskers lol so now im imagining his sisters crunched his whiskers off and only left one. "Well I was gonna call you Whiskerkit but now you're Onekit"

This is right. Some of the names are just insane. Once I saw a meme that the kits were named Onekit, Twokit, Redkit, Bluekit. And the weird thing was, 3/4 of lived, and were leaders! Warriors makes no sense.

In Italy, Onewhisker was named "Baffetto" (so might be traslatable as "Littlewishker") and as a leader he was named "BaffoaStella" ("Star-shaped whisker")

Yeah, I feel bad for anyone named ONE STAR. That would be such a name to make fun of. How about changing Firestar to FIVE star while we're at it?

What if he happened to be born with only one whisker, and the others grew in later? Or what if he was born first? And I wonder if Torn- refers to their fur pattern? Or maybe they acquired a wound somehow as a newborn?

In the polish translation, he is called "Pojedynczy Wąs" which means "Singlewhisker". That makes a lot more sense.

I think often queens named their kits with their warrior name in mind. That's how I interpreted it at least.

I vividly remember one of the Erin’s confirming his warrior name was the way it was because he had a single whisker. Idk if this was also confirmed or it was made up by the fandom, but also because he was an only child. Apparently Ashfoot and Morningflower were confirmed to be his siblings back in 2016, which I had absolutely zero knowledge of until a few days ago, but they were from the first litter while Onestar was from the second. Not sure why they changed it to where they’re from the same litter when (for me at least) Ashfoot has always come off as WAY older than him. This SE seems really boring and unnecessary. The excerpt was written so bizarrely and I hated reading it. We don’t really need a whole SE on him, a novella would’ve been more beneficial. With the insane amount of mistakes in Leopardstar’s Honor, I’m worried how many this one will have

I like to think that when he was born, he was the first kit and his mom thought he was the only kit. So she named him Onekit, and then the other kits came but they already named him Onekit

When I first saw Onewhisker's name I was like: "He has one whisker?" Over time I grew to like the name because it just felt right :>

I also thought the One prefix referred to him being an only child, after the sibling reveal I think it's about him being the 1st born. As for the -whisker suffix, it could be more symbolic than a literal description. The reason behind kit names and warrior names aren't always related. Like how -heart is earned for being noble or courageous, -whisker could be for being wise, calm etc.

A headcanon of mine is that Onewhisker lost most of his whiskers in a battle as an apprentice, and the wounds on his muzzle were so bad that he couldn't grow most of his whiskers back (it also left his muzzle badly scarred). And as honor for his bravery and fierceness in battle he was given the way Onewhisker, because he only had one whisker left (that's my way of justifying his weird name at least)

I've been headcanoning recently that he has one black whisker among all of the white whiskers he has, and that one whisker stands out. My cat (an orange tabby with some white markings, for the record) mostly has white whiskers, but he has a few little black whiskers. So that's the only reason I've been headcanoning it for Onewhisker.

I do like the idea of one colored whisker that gives him the appearance of having one whisker since the black ones can blend in and not be as visable

In german his nsme is translated to Shortwhiskers and later Shortstar. I always liked that name, especially since I think he fall short on a lot of things. Short on luck, for once. And I like how it contrasts with Giantstar/Tallstar. For me it represents how he stood as a a short cat in the shadow of Tallstar. And albeit he wasn’t the best option, he tried his best - but fell short.

I like to imagine a leader not getting the gist of what the parents wanted their kit to ultimately be named. "Your warrior name is One... uh.. Onesong"
