My Southern DaySave ticket rolls on from Brighton to Eastbourne. It will be getting too dark to record soon, but there's still time to check out Brighton's wonderful station and then enjoy the run through the South Downs to Eastbourne.
Although I'm limited to Southern services, the ToC (Govia Thameslink) has substituted in one of its Gatwick Express Class 387s for this journey. That suits me fine as I've never travelled on a GX train before...
Departure: Brighton, England, UK
Destination: Eastbourne, England, UK
Distance: 38 km / 24 miles
Duration: 44 mins
Average speed: 52 km/h 32 mph
Example Costs:
+ Standard class off-peak single: £13.10 / €15,30
+ I was travelling on a Southern Daysave: £23.50 / €27,10
Date of Travel: November 2023
Operator: Southern Railway
Motive power: Class 387/2 4-car electric multiple unit. Built: Bombardier, Derby (2015 onwards)

I can't hear the name Eastbourne without hearing the Major saying "I won't have that! There's a place at Eastbourne!"

Last time I travelled on the Gatwick Express it was loco push pull, late 70's early 80's. Often changed onto it at Gatwick when I had missed a limited stop fast service up from Brighton, Bognor / Worthing or Eastbourne / Hastings at Three Bridges. The Express had no dedicated platforms at Victoria then.

@@tonys1636 yes it has gone bit downhill now. What with it just being a Southern train, painted red... Thanks for watching 👍

Berwick pronounced locally as 'berrik'. I've lived in East Sussex for over 65 years. I know this line well since I've been using it for at least 50 years on and off. These days I have retired to Polegate.

Yes, It really is a lovely one. I wish there was a way of making the original station building more obvious but it gets squashed by the massive trainshed and the port cochere on the front. Thanks, as ever, for watching another 👍

Gatwick Express pretty much died when they were forced to extend the VIC-GTW route on to BTN. They are now just Southern trains that haven't been repainted in the red colour scheme, all part of Govia/TSGN

Love these connected series! You’re right about the beauty of Brighton Station which leads me to suggest that you do some videos specifically related to the station architecture along your routes. I’d live to know more about Britain’s historical railway infrastructure.

Yes, I do like to focus more on the architecture than maybe some other KZfaqrs. Although a series specifically about the architecture, well, I think Tim Dunn may have wrapped that one up! Thank you so much for watching and coming along to enjoy the architecture. I can certainly promise much more of that in 2024 👍

The Class 387/2 that are with Southern I think that they are staying with Southern permanently and Gatwick Express to keep their Class 387/2s. If Bombardier was still around they could have manufactured few more extra Electrostars to be used on the East Coastway and West Coastway services.

Haha! No, it was a guy who came up to me on a train a few days before that said he liked my stuff, but couldn't understand why people were always talking about drinking coffee and not a good cup of tea - so I wanted to point out my tea and also kinda give him a mention as he was very nice when he came up to me.

So this Berwick is pronounced Burr wick then, unlike the northern Berwick which is pronounced Berrick. I assume that's to confuse Americans?
