6 Buttons That Actually Do Nothing

So, you tap a button and something happens - that’s how the world works, right? Well, not exactly. The world is actually filled with buttons that are only there to seem like they do something, while in fact being useless. And not only buttons - there are all kinds of things that are there for no apparent reason.
If you live on, say, 15th floor and you’re in a hurry to get home because your bladder is about to burst, for example, you’ll probably feel fine running up the stairs. But if you decide to wait for the elevator instead, you’ll smash that door close button until the doors finally close.

SUMMARY:
- Transport authorities sometimes switch off the functionality of these traffic buttons on purpose. In New York, for example, there are 1,000 of them, but currently only 100 actually work when you press them.
- Such buttons have an important psychological effect: doing something feels better than not doing anything. When you press the button at a crossing, you feel more assured that the light will eventually switch to green.
- Not to disrupt the work of the whole network, many of the traffic control switches were turned into placebo buttons.
- The elevator doors will stay open for no less than the time appointed to them, no matter how much or how long you mash that button.
- So unless you’re an emergency service worker or just happen to know the override code, you won’t be able to make the doors close faster.
- If you live outside the US, though, your chances of getting a working close button are much higher. In many countries, there are no such strict regulations, so you can easily find an elevator where, if you press the door close button, the doors will actually shut immediately.
- Most office buildings have a central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC for short). And the thing about this central system is that you can’t actually affect it from anywhere outside the control center.
- In fact, there are two general types of office thermostats: one that is total placebo and one that is only partially so.
- The partial placebo thermostat has a little bit of sway: it can change a couple degrees in both directions, but no more than that.
- Whenever you download a file from the Internet or install a new app on your device, you see a bar that informs you of how much time you have left to wait. Ever seen it stuck at 99% for, like, forever, though? Yeah, it’s exactly what it seems: the progress bar is always wildly inaccurate.
- When you run, you burn calories for sure, but the precise amount depends on various factors, such as your weight, overall fitness, and body fat percentage.
- This counter is, once again, only there to assure you that you’re doing everything right. The downside of this is that even if you’re not doing it right, the treadmill won’t let you know.
- When a call attempt failed, the system didn’t tell the caller about it, but simply switched to another recipient instead. So when somebody took the phone on the other end of the line, you apologized for dialing a wrong number and tried again. This way, you didn’t feel the frustration of having a failed call.

Based on the hotels I've been in and carrying a thermometer, if the air conditioner is a physical unit mounted on the wall, the thermostat will work. If all you see is a vent or two on the wall or above the entrance door, the thermostat does nothing other than adjust the fan speed, i.e. my thermometer reading wouldn't change even a few hours later.

This. When someone asks me what is better - a climate that is too hot or too cold and i had to live in such a place then i always prefer the cold. It's much easier to get warm by moving or adding layers of clothes. When it's hot there's little you can do do cool yourself down. In home for example yes you can cool down temporarely but you can't drag along air conditioner, ice cubes, cold water and shade with you everywhere you go. Especially if you don't own a car. Public transport is ofter horrible when it's too hot outside. Especially in countries where it's rare to get heat waves so no one has accounted for such possibility. I mean imagine if there was thick coat of snow in Australia tomorrow. It would likely be a chaos.

Crosswalk buttons in my town certainly do work-just not as you might expect: it won’t make the light change any sooner, but when it does change, you’ll get a “Walk” signal and the green light will stay on for 15-25 sec depending on the width of the street, as opposed to 5-8 sec if you didn’t press the button, and you’ll never get the Walk light without it. Scary thing is, I’ve seen the button change the light’s behavior even after it turned green, including times I was starting a left turn across that crosswalk!

The crosswalk button is important depending on where you live. When I lived in VT and was trying to cross a busy road, (my first few weeks there), I waited patiently for the light to change. I didnt dare cross because traffic zipped by rather fast. It wasnt until one of my friends came by (she was an upperclassman in college) and told me that I HAVE to push the button. Sure enough a few seconds after I pushed the button, the traffic light turned yellow, then red, then the walk sign illuminated. New York City though is a different story. They are there because some people are persnickety and love to push others' buttons. :)

I have to dispel the door close button in elevator thing. I live in a building where we are all disabled. And they do have the doors open and sometimes I am in a hurry so do hit the door close button. It works quite well. Also, I happen to be blind and in many cities now they have what they call audible pedestrian signals. This is a combination button that vibrates for people with hearing and seeing difficulties. But it also tells me when the walk sign is on to cross the street. However, this does not negate me using my mobility skills to listen for traffic. It does help though in situations where there might be a machinery running and I can’t hear traffic I can just feel the vibration of the signal when it’s time to go. Helpful.

I have to disagree regarding hotel room thermostats and download progress bars. Many modern hotels have units in each room and you can indeed completely control them directly. And download progress bars are based on a percentage of the total file [size] downloaded. The progress isn't linear/consistent, but the percentage shown is indeed accurate. The statements made about that seem to actually be directed towards Windows file copy dialogs, and not internet downloads.

Actually the crosswalk does work. I have proof, when I go to our local mall we have to pass a lot of underused crosswalks and when you press them they automatically turn to a cross sign. Once when I did this I ended up causeing a temporary traffic jam (only lasted about a minute) because I had pressed the wrong button

Crosswalk buttons don't just turn the light green. They also turn the WALK sign on and keep the light green longer. It may depend on the city you live in, but everywhere I've lived, if you don't press the button, the WALK sign won't appear for most intersections. And many of the automatic intersections don't have buttons because the WALK sign comes on every time.

This si really funny because in Slovenia at least two of the things mentioned are true. Buttons in elevators do close doors faster and you can try it and cross walks don't change to green if you don't push the pedestrian button at least not everywhere.

NY is full of inert pedestrian buttons. AZ they are not inert, but on major-to-major you don't need them as there will be enough green light time to cross even if the pedestrian signals do not switch green. Minor to major intersections need the pedestrian light to alter light timing to stay green long enough for pedestrian crossing.
