When bad hair days are your everyday reality, it really zaps the fun out of your morning routine. Thankfully, all you need to do to make your hair perfect is know your hair type and how to operate with it!
In the 90s, Andre Walker, one of the most talented hairstylists who worked with Oprah Winfrey and Halle Berry, came up with his own hair typing system. It was originally created for his hair care line but quickly became widely popular. Basically, Andre Walker classifies not one or two but 9 different types of hair! And it's time to find out which one of them is yours.

SUMMARY:
- In the Andre Walker hair typing system, everything comes down to how curly your hair is naturally.
- 1A hair is usually not thick at all and extremely soft and fine. Its biggest advantage is that it naturally looks really shiny.
- 1B hair, on the other hand, is kinda thick and has great volume near the roots, so it looks way more full than 1A hair type.
- 1C hair is really thick and has impressive volume. However, it's almost impossible to curl! This type is pretty common among Asian women.
- 2A hair is right in between wavy and straight. Without any styling, it tends to form weak S-shaped strands, curling a bit at the ends.
- 2B hair has way more visible and prominent S-shaped curls. It can be slightly frizzy as well, adhering to the shape of your head.
- 2C hair combines wavy and curly hair. It's very frizzy, quickly curls up in humid environments, and has tons of volume and generally thicker waves.
- 3A hair is shiny and great at taking any form you want it to. This type has a very definite S-shape which makes it appear full and healthy.
- 3B type has a smaller curl pattern than 3A, ranging from spiral-like curls to tight corkscrews. It also has a combination texture.
- 3C hair is actually thinner than 3A and 3B but its curls are smaller which makes it appear thicker. Plus, it's very tight, almost to the point of being kinky.
- 4A hair has an S-shaped pattern if you stretch it, but usually it's just tight coils. It tends to be thin, brittle, and fragile.
- 4B hair bends with really sharp angles and often has a Z-shape and zigzag-like curls. Just like 4A, this type is pretty fragile as well.
- And 4C type is the hardest to style and take care of. It doesn't have a definite curl pattern which makes it look awesome but extremely hard to comb.
- Straight and soft hair like yours gets dirty and oily pretty quickly, so try to pick the shampoos that have curative clay as one of the components. It will make your hair stay clean longer.
- If you fall into the second hair group, your hair care should be completely different. Your main task is to make your hair look thick without it looking crazy and messy. Try to look for shampoos and conditioners with a moisturizing effect.
- Curly-haired guys and girls from hair group number 3 have pretty much the same end goal as people with type 2 hair - keeping their curls hydrated.
- And, finally, type 4, it's your turn! Your hair doesn't get oily that easily, so unlike hair type number one, you don't have to wash it that often. The softer your shampoo and conditioner are, the better.

for anyone who has type 2 hair ( a, b or c) , i highly advise you to use sea salt water spray or ocean water, if you can get it naturally. Not only will it reduce the risk of dandruff, but it also tightens your curls and enhances your waves. But if you use normal salt and water, it could be very harmful. Also, dont try to use it everyday or every time you shower. For example, you could use it once whenever you shower. try sleeping on a silk pillowcase instead of a cotton one. It would reduce the frizz and less breakage would occur. when it comes to tying your hair, use scrunchies instead of thin rubber bands. if youre drying your hair, try using a microfiber hair towel or a t-shirt, if you dont have such towel. the t shirt would prevent frizz and absorb excess water. use hair milk if you have one. it provides moisture for your hair. lastly, eat fruits and veggies more often. oranges and grapefruits are some fruits that decreases the risk of frizz, and drink water every 2 hours or so. *EDIT*: i hope you try these hacks one day and leave your opinions about it on the comments! Also, rectify me if i have made any mistake or if the suggested tips are incorrect. Have a nice day!!

My mom has 1b and my dad has 2b. I ended up with a mix of straight hair and majority 2a and 2b types of hair on my head. The front part is pretty straight, and the back is wavy. Very hard to style all my life. Was worse when I was younger when I had 3x the amount of hair that was actually 3a curly. As I got older the hair has lost most of the curl. I’m planning to grow my hair long and braid it. That weight will pull it down and keep it tame. I’ve had short and medium hair styles that were messy chic. I’m tired of the messy look.

3b, but I already knew that, as a stylist! I prefer it flat ironed for photos, or pulled up! It tends to look like a triangle otherwise. Some professional tips as a curly girl: Never let terrycloth touch your hair. Always use an old t-shirt or microfiber to absorb wet hair. Use a squirt bottle on days you don’t shampoo and some leave-in conditioner. These are my best hair days! I don’t let shampoo touch my hair, I use co-wash which is a cleansing conditioner. Cool/cold air is THE best on curls as it helps that cuticle stay down. Best of luck, Curly girls! ❤

@@LeahMcNabbsame. I'm not really sure why mine does that though. It's like it's curly on the outside but underneath it's wavy and almost completely straight. Like I said I don't know why, it could be genetics or it could be from me straightening it so much as a young teenager and literally burning my hair. I just do everything that she said and put gel in my hair. It usually does the trick but I'm still not getting the form that I want

Anyone in the 4 group - DO NOT COMB, BRUSH OR MANIPULATE YOUR HAIR TOO MUCH. "Fragile" is why it seems hard to grow because it breaks from just air blowing it too hard 😂 Combs and brushes destroy our hair - you can hear it ripping. I stopped, just steam my hair daily via shower, throw on my fav hair butter, and seal with oil. I have a big 4B-4C fro with mid back length hair when pulled 😅 I was protective styling but could not figure out why it wasnt growing despite moisturizing. Our hair breaks so easy - our ancestors used mud for a reason - our hair is not designed to hang nor really be touched at all. It compiles onto its curly self to be in a *fixed* state to keep the sun and vermin out. We were taught to "tame" it - but it is already tamed.

Fun fact: Type 1A is hair that has baby-fine, completely straight strands. This type is straight from root to tip. Typically, type 1A hair has little to no body and has a difficult time keeping a curl. This hair type is actually pretty rare .There are different types of naturally straight hair, from fine and thin to thick and coarse, with pros and cons for all the ways hair can be straight-and yes, we're even talking about hair that's straightened using styling tools and products

I have this hair. It's flat. No matter what I do to it, it's flat. It's also kind of brittle. You can put it in a ponytail or braid like they said, but it WILL fall out. If you have this hair, grow it long as you can and just have straight shiny flat hair with no volume at all. It's for the best trust me. Also, bangs are NOT your friend.
@plumeria66

1a is more common in Northern Europe. Asia has billions of people with 1c hair. The hair there is so straight that short hair cuts have the hair stick straight out of the skull. And the hair is not baby fine. Each strand is thick. Northern Europeans have fine straight hair. Asians have thick straight hair. I’m Asian and my mom has 1c hair and my dad has wavy 2b hair. My brother and I have both 2a and 2b hair on our heads. My sister has 1b hair. The most obvious sign of Asian straight hair is that it never frizzes even in the most humid weather. It is stubbornly straight. If it frizzes or changes shape, it is not Asian but has the baby fine European hair characteristics.

The thing about Asian straight hair (because there are rare ones with waves and curls…I am one of them with 2a and 2b) that is different is that Asian straight hair never frizzes even in humid weather. Just never changes its shape whether, dry, wet, semi-wet. Also, each strand of hair is totally straight, including the little hairs near the hairline. A lot of Caucasians I see with straight hair have wavy baby hairs or ends that curl. Also Asian straight hair is a bit thicker stranded and has a smooth shine. In the shade it is black but seen thru the sunlight it can have a red or orange tint. This is something I notice doesn’t exist in other races with naturally black hair.

Ah, I think I must be 1C, I've had so many hairdressers over the years tell me I have "Asian" hair (my ancestors were Italian, Dutch and black Irish, which is actually Spanish). Can't hold a curl, not even when I got a perm back in the 70s! Definitely agree with the "cascade" hairstyle suggestion.

Use it 2-3 times a week and massage it in your hair it’s best to sleep with it or you can wash it after one hour. But use sulfate free shampoo because the ones that do contain sulfate can cause frizzy hair or hair loss

For the 4th hair, the most curly and short one. I felt like the discluded it. All they said was: “greatest shrinking, very hard to comb, more to take care of ” all the other hair types got attention. Especially the straight hair :(

I’m sorry but you see a lot more style options with straight hair it’s always been that way in the western world anyway for example African women with hair such as 4C may style it there own way and it would only apply to people with that hair type not the rest of the world I’ve also spoken to many black people who would agree their hair can be very hard to style and that’s coming from myself who’s a 3C

How is a cartoon with an afro specifically white, or yes, not white, for that matter? He actually is represented pretty well to me. I'd bet it is a stock image, maybe the choices were very limited. If anything, I could agree that the lack of choices is the, uh, root, of the problem. OK, had to have some "dry" humor.

I disagree with lumping all the #1 hair types together when giving care advice. Type 1A is _drastically_ different than type 1C. As someone with thick, coarse 1C hair, I have only ever found two stylists out of dozens that actually knew what they were doing with my hair texture. Volume is something I already have naturally, and I do NOT want more of it--in fact, I always have my stylist thin out my ends, otherwise my hair poofs out. Also, my hair can hold curls without product for two days. Sounds like the only hair types this video knows anything about are 1A and 2A.

1a hair should have two thicknesses. Baby fine and limp, and thick stranded. Maybe yours is thick stranded so it adds to the volume. Also if your hair changes shape in any way on its own or frizzes in humidity, then it is not actually straight but has traits of 2a and 2b. I have 2a and 2b hair on my head. My sister has 1a and it is stubbornly straight. No humidity changes her hair whatsoever. Or maybe your hair is between 1 and 2. Just my thoughts, maybe I’m totally wrong.
