Alexander Hamilton's brilliant observation made when he was 17 in 1774 (he lived 1757-1804) tells you all you need to know why governments, companies, schools, hospitals - you name it - ALWAYS dig in and refuse to admit they've made a mistake, and make it worse. How often do you see yet another scandal on the news that could have been avoided if they didn't do this?
'To retract an error even in the beginning is no easy task. Perseverance confirms us in it and rivets the difficulty; but in a public station, to have been in an error, and to have persisted in it, when it is detected, ruins both reputation and fortune. To this we may add that disappointment and opposition inflame the minds of men and attach them still more to their mistakes.'
Alexander Hamilton 1774

I agree, a brilliant young man who was very much a genius. Not to mention a brilliant wordsmith. An interesting point is, that Hamilton didn't follow his own prudent advice till it was too late. In regards to hiding his affair, that did indeed as he stated, ruin his reputation.

He might have added, in modern parlance, referring to the principal strategy of public service crisis management: "Even if you kick it into the long grass - it's still there!"

A US Presidential candidate should be required to admit to a dozen huge mistakes before being qualified for candidacy. The orange dude would go purple holding his breath.

If only it was thatway these days. Unfortunately people fail up these days in most apects of public life. It seems promotion follows failure

Unfortunately Hamilton’s quote contains far too many words for people these days.
