Hi, you keep referring to the laws that apply in, "the UK" and "England". Which one??? As I'm sure your aware, the UK consists of three other countries. The law in Scotland, in general, varies greatly from English law. Can you please clarify if these are UK wide laws, or as you refer, apply only in England?
@BrimwoodFarm

Great point, Tom...pinned your comment. These are DEFRA rules, so England. They work closely with devolved governments in both Scotland and Wales but thats not to mean the rules are exactly the same.

Jeez we are so controlled in this country. The government just love to poke their noses into absolutely everything. This year I started vegetable gardening and managed to get a veg plot and greenhouse going. I love the satisfaction of growing some of my own food and not relying on supermarkets for everything plus the bonus of not having modified or chemically treated food. I would love to have a couple of chickens just for the eggs and they could have some of the scraps from the garden that would normally go to compost but all these rules make me think twice. I'm sure modern society would just love us all to be consumers and spend money instead of trying to be more self sufficient. Not a good thing in my opinion as we should all be encouraged to produce something ourselves no matter how small
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 4 жыл бұрын
I do understand why the rules are in place (contamination of the food chain) but for people who just want to keep a few chickens in their back garden it is rather OTT. Dont be put off ... you can still use all your kitchen scraps in your compost heap to build lovely soil for your vegetable garden. And you can still feed the chickens all the scraps directly from your garden when you're gardening - so any greens that dont come inside the house. I'll deleaf cabbages, top carrots and radishes, pull weeds etc straight from the garden etc and give direct to the chickens. That's all fine. :)

@@BrimwoodFarm I'd also love to keep bees at some point and was looking at getting a flow hive which allows you to extract the honey without opening the hive and disturbing the bees. I guess I'll have to look into the regulations regarding owning a beehive before deciding whether to buy one. With regards to chickens my sister had a couple in her garden and they were ex battery hens that she had rescued which I thought was quite nice as she let them roam freely round her garden. Her neighbour also did the same and the chickens would often swap sides through a hole in the adjoining fence.

I used to work for the Council, and its hard for them to provide things in writing as many of them don't know and don't have the resources to find out, the future may be dull as many European Companies are buying out council departments for a few years just how Westminister and Camden sold Environmental Services to the French Company Veolia whose charges are bogus and sky high. I have a massage business, and my council wanted certain certificates from me, I requested they come together with all other Boroughs in England and decide together what is needed and what isn't before trying to impose individual laws which I consider bullying, so they stopped harassing me now LOL last I checked we have a single parliament not 2 state Goverment of Queen and Parliament.

I've not actually come across this before...for a beak to break so easily it must've been quite weak. Beaks will regrow so I would monitor and make sure it's eating. If it's just going to be a pet chicken and it can feed properly, you shouldn't come up against too many problems.

I never knew that about the dried mealworm, especially as all the KZfaq videos show them being used but it makes sense. I got some calcinworms for my 3 but the girls just didnt like them. I put some in my hand and held them out. One of them gave them a peck just to be polite but just dropped it on the ground Clearly they knew the rules better than I did. What they do love are live plum moth caterpillars. We have a plum tree which gets badly infected. If you remove the stone correctly, you can pick out the caterpillar with a bit of plum to live in and drop it into a small sealed container. Rinse the caterpillar poop off the plum and it is perfectly tasty to eat. In fact, the caterpillar seems to make the plum ripen faster so those plums aren sweeter. They will live a day or two in their prison. When you have collected enough, you can give your flock a really tasty treat

@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 5 жыл бұрын
No law in the UK for chicken runs with roofs ... and think of all the free range. They might have got their wires crossed with the rules when we had an avian flu lockdown a couple of years ago. At that time all birds had to be kept inside or within runs covered in tarpaulin to keep the wild birds separate.

If you have to cull a bird how do you do it as seems in UK they say must stun first then cut neck, can’t find you tube video In UK to show this process only US video and they cut neck/artery with sharpe knife.

@BrimwoodFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Regulations in the UK state that you must stun - in poultry and rabbits that can be done by dislocation of the neck if other equipment isnt available. For stallholders etc this is usually achieved by a bolt gun in rabbits and breaking the neck or dislocating using the broomstick method for poultry. Hope that helps!

@@user-vx6tc8mv9y no worries. It is hard in the UK because taking any poultry to the abattoir just wouldnt make economic sense so luckily they currently have this legislation for poultry. However, it also only counts for specific sizes...I'm fairly sure when you go up to turkeys a stun gun is required.

It's pretty hard over here in the UK. Most abbatoirs wont take poultry unless in large numbers. Your best bet is to look at becoming unregistered to despatch for commercial sale at home - though it's a lot of red tape and cost so only worth doing if you're going to make it a core business plan.

+Jeff Eden they're not really, but I think it's important for people to be informed. After last year's flu outbreak there were a number of fines doled out and I can foresee agencies becoming more proactive if commercial sectors are under threat. If small-scale keeping has the potential to spread contaminants to industry they'll certainly start doing more.

That is just ridiculous. How can people keeping a few birds at home compete?! I mean, okay..they'll lose ONE household's egg sales but if the industry isn't stable enough to take that dent, then it's gonna bust anyway!
