What a brave little Horus! I hope he recovers very quickly after his op. I had a beautiful one eyed cat who lived to be nearly 20 yrs old. Stay strong Geoff😻

Thank you. I love that!! My precious cat was 21 - he was a trooper. And though Horus was only ever a farm cat, he's lodged himself into my heart now 😍

Sorry to hear about all the difficulties. I hope things improve soon. It might be better to see if you can find a vet who uses homeopathy. They tend to be more about care and less about profit. Also, there aren't the huge range of side-effects that drugs have. Re blackbirds - are they afraid of birds of prey? You can get kites (as in the thing that kids fly) for pest control which are designed like different birds of prey. You can suspend in the air using a flexible pole, tree branch etc. Not sure how efficient they are.

I think that could work re: the blackbird. Will have to give it a go!

Awk Geoff I'm so sorry for your troubles. That's a lot going on! I feel sorry for Horis, (I had a rabbit named Horis... And a horse named Bunny) but £1000?? Sorry but no. As sad as it would be I couldn't justify that either. Sorry about the chicks too. That's rough man! I'm glad to see your animal-pecked market garden is producing tho! And lamb stew.... Yum! 😂😂 And lamb babies!

My neighbours have a fake flying hawk that is attached to a line. Maybe that might help with the blackbirds. Could you set up a go fund me for the cat?
@BrimwoodFarm7 күн бұрын
Now THAT is a great idea .... would probably deter pigeons too! I have thought about a Go Fund me. I'm going to assess the situation at next vet's visit and see where we're at.

Hey Geoff. Sorry you have had troubles with your dog, cat, birds can escaping sheep. It's good to know that you have some positives and some summer lambs on the way and you are selling produce. I hope this all helps. The weather has improved for you, it's even improved for us up here and we can hopefully soon have the contractor come in and do us a cut for baled silage. We think you are doing a great job Geoff. Thanks for this vid. 🤓🐶🧔

It's definitely FINALLY the weather for cutting; all my neighbours are making hay this weekend! And thank you :D
@johnnytasker15317 күн бұрын
@@BrimwoodFarm Yes, it's cutting weather, you neighbours are haymaking, it's to early to make hay here, we don't make any, just silage. You are welcome. 🤓🐶🧔

Vets are such conmen, if you can get a prescription look online and the drugs are a 4th of the price.

Yep! I used to work as a veterinary nurse and once the practice heard the 'insured' word, it became even worse in terms of charging for extras.

There is nothing quite as stressful as (a) sheep that is an escaper, especially when the rest of them do the “she’s escaped” baaaaaa and then on the flip there is nothing as relaxing as watching contented sheep munching. Chickens are the same! So glad about the ducks, especially the surprise Appleyards ❤. Poor Horace, I think what makes it even worse, if that’s possible, is that vet practices have changed so much - it seems to be an all or nothing approach and the all is SO expensive and if you don’t take that option you are made to feel like you are failing your pet - but even 10 years ago and definitely before that all these scans and crazy prices were not normal. A decent vet would have compassionately told you that you could try for a few days, but perhaps PTS was the right thing - and even without the fractured skull the eye removal wouldn’t have been that much. Don’t feel bad, all Horace will know is that you tried and you cared and loved him ❤❤❤
@BrimwoodFarm8 күн бұрын
Oh, you hit the nail on the head .. with both the sheep and the vets! I love my sheep but they can be SO frustrating. Missy and Lola are now contained so (hopefully) it'll be a little more peaceful!

I feel your pain, Geoff! Though we are a farm animal rescue, we go through similar bouts of “What else on EARTH could possibly go wrong?!” Between gardening, animals, finances, family, and so much more, I think anyone with a farm is juggling a lot! Looking forward to a calmer season for you! 🤞 You are doing such a great job!

Maybe getting rid of the sheep would make you less stressed, and give you more time for the other animals
@BrimwoodFarm8 күн бұрын
Definitely less stress but also less enjoyment. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, but I love the sheep. I think I just have to be ruthless in terms of getting rid of any individual sheep that shows bad behaviour.

At least I’m not alone with the pheasant chicks… about 4 weeks ago I had hatched out 5 lady Amherst chicks after two weeks they had all died. I think it were because they weren’t eating enough. They gave no warning, they just died. My male have really not been breeding the females. Almost no eggs er fertile. I just hatched out 1 lady Amherst with 6 araucana chicks, I sure hope it will survive a little bit longer… Love your content. Gotta look up to a professional pheasant keeper😅
@BrimwoodFarm8 күн бұрын
Hahaha, thanks. I have the same. Chicks look fine and then only 30 minutes later sometimes, they're just dead. Once I began feeding insects on top of the pheasant crumb things definitely improved; but they are fragile things!

Wow! Sounds like a really tough week but I am truly amazed by your positivty! I wanted to say I think you're doing a realy great job. You're dealing with adversity with the weather, crazy animal behaviour and some down right rotten luck, however you manage to stay positive and in my opinion at least are making the best decisions for both you and your animals. Keep at it, we are all behind you!!!

Sorry you've had such a rotten week. It won't help right away but could you look about for selling sights for a extra large walk in brassica cage that you could cover the market garden with? I know you can get extremely large ones, or if you can get your hands on scaffold poles possibly making one your self that you could always move if needed but would protect your crops from the pesky birds?
@BrimwoodFarm8 күн бұрын
I don't think I could get one large enough for the whole thing but maybe smaller ones over vulnerable areas could work.
@samanthamackie86478 күн бұрын
Just get what you can as and when you find it and expand as you go along I've used those metal chicken runs in the past and gazebo frames work also and people often give them away when the panels have torn etc
