Brine pools, on one hand, provide the basis for life through chemosynthesis for creatures living near them on the bottom of the ocean. On the other hand, the fluid they contain is extremely toxic to many forms of sea life. Here we see creatures that have ventured inside the dangerous interior of the brine pool and failed to return.
During two cruise legs in May of the 2015 E/V Nautilus field season, we deployed remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Hercules to examine some of the cold seep features of the deep Gulf of Mexico.
At some seep sites, seawater interacts with ancient salt deposits found deep in the seafloor, producing a highly saline fluid (brine) that can be more than four times more saline than seawater. When this brine is expelled, it is far denser than the overlying seawater and does not mix very easily with it. In some cases, the brine forms large pools, rivers or lakes.
This highly saline environment is toxic for most organisms, but we did encounter beds of mussels and fields of tube worms that have adapted to life in this extreme habitat by processing seep gases and chemicals into energy. A larger brine pool was dubbed the “Hot Tub of Despair,” referring to its warm temperature (19°C) and high salt content-which can be fatal to many animals unlucky enough to fall in. This site was found nearly 3,300 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico and is a circular pool 100 feet in circumference and 12 feet deep.
We are studying these unique brine pools to better understand how they form, how they may change over time, and how the organisms living near them are able to survive-and even thrive. We analyzed water samples, conducted high-resolution mapping, and completed extensive visual surveys to gather data on these sites that our science partners continue to analyze.

Please tell me which of the two sounds more significant. The same Donald Trump supporters acting like the Russian thing is no big deal would be calling for the execution of Hillary Clinton on grounds of treason if she was the one implicated.

Hey Nautilus-Crew! So I really enjoy your videos and it's absoooolutely amazing what u guys are showing! A question that comes up is: why dont you take samples of the "brine" and mussels and maybe a dead crab or maybe you could put a crab that just died into a brine pool and see how it changes over time (might be that a normal shore crab is just going to crack under the immense pressure but since you have such a sophisticated robot you should figure out a solution for that haha) Also - As mentioned in the video, what would happen if you destroyed a brine pool? The salty water inside of it would simply mix with the seawater and dilute until it becomes normal seawater in the end? or what exactly does the brine-fluid contain? And it sure does change while being taken up to the surface? (pressure changes and so on) Thanks for your efforts and i'd love to hear from you!

Amazing! Underwater waterfall!!! What an amazing world we live in! Who are the 60+ people who disliked THIS? Why? That crab with it's legs sticking up above the surface of the brine was incredible. It looked like it was sitting in water with its legs sticking up out of the water, but the entire situation IS UNDER WATER!!! MIND=💣💥 P

as to the sixty ppl, most likely they didn't want utube to flood them with similar or even the same videos as suggestions, which they do even if you just view a video, not to mention like it. only by disliking a video can one keep from being inundated by a subject one doesn't care for, like laughing about the death of the poor crabs....personally, i thot it was a good video, i will give no dislike

What's the depth here? People are 'sharing' this with idiotic headlines as if this was something just underneath the surface, some toxic area that causes instant death.

Wow! The out flow rate is amazingly high! Where is the inflow? I think that is an intriguing direction of investigation. Also, are the crustaceans benefiting from some of the brine overflow as well? It is interesting to see the boarder line of their proximity to the top of the wall. Clearly a not livable zone. Much like the tree line, on a high altitude mountain.

How long would a human being last in that environment? It looks like the crabs die very soon after they enter the zone.

given that we cant breathe underwater, and cant survive while under that much water pressure, I'd say about 1 second
@claretheworm
@claretheworm 5 жыл бұрын
The crabs there can handle the pressures of the deep. However the brine pool has no oxygen at all and due to its hypersalinity, marine animals just die. Lol humans won't even get a chance to drown, I believe we would be instantaneously crushed by the pressures xD.
