Home made Briquette Press, assembly and first operation. My aim was to improve on other designs seen on You Tube. I wanted the operation to be quick and simple and to produce a consistent product. I also take the view that the enormous pressure that can be achieved with hydraulics is unnecessary. The most important thing being a smooth work flow. As far as I know, many of the design features have not appeared on similar machines, so I hope I have added to the pool of creativity around this subject.
I have received many requests for the CAD file so have now added a Sketchup drawing which can be downloaded here btcloud.bt.com/web/app/share/...

I have watched almost all the bricket press videos available to date and compare them to my version (thirty-five years ago) comprising car scissor-jack, piston, perforated pipe and holding frame. Your design is elegant, well engineered, smooth in operation and, in my opinion, the most practical solution I have yet seen. Very impressed with the maximisation of leverage at the critical point, you obviously have an engineering background. Best Regards Paul

You have DEFINITELY Added to the pool of creativity ! ! ! thank you. beautiful operation, very nice looking finished product. I imagine giving it a few seconds under the max pressure would help it to Spring up a little less during drying.

Great video, best design i found yet! and thank you for using this color, it made me remember that i have iron cast orange juice press in the storage room, in 2-3 hours i finish converting it to coal briquette press. addition to your design , just put the lid you remove every time on hinge on front side of the press, this will be more convenient instead of removing it every time.

Suggest a measured container to scoop up the slurry with. Scoop it up in one motion. Scrape the top off and upend it on to the machine. This a hinge for the cap and a stand for your bucket will save a bunch of time. Another stand or rack for the finished briquettes will save a ton of time as well and avoid damage to briquettes.

Belated appreciation of a great design and superb piece of engineering. My only mundane advice would be to have the device mounted above a large tray to catch all of the extruded fluid. The water will be super-saturated with starch and will help bind the briquette during the drying-out process.

Very well thought out. I have been working on a design, the concept of which is not a million miles away but mostly made from timber. No success yet but you have given me some good pointers. Thank you. Garth

Very nice! I would suggest a work bench right next to the press so you wouldn't have to bend over repeatedly to pick up your slurry and cover etc. Other than that, brilliant!

I think your idea would work, in fact the briquette would force the lid into the open position whilst it is being expelled. The loading phase is the least efficient and to help I have now made a square funnel which speeds this up considerably. Your lid modification would have to allow room for the funnel. I think the next design should automatically load from a hopper. I don't make enough to make further development worthwhile. Many thanks for your suggestion; I hope it inspires others.

You may want to consider adding dimples or thick raised lines of weld to any flat spaces on the piston faces; the thicker, the better. This would add even more surface area for drying as well as burning.

Very impressed with this machine. Not sure if you're aware of it, but sawdust burning stoves have been made which rely on a central hole to burn from. The briquettes are dry formed inside the stove and burned from the middle outwards. I'd be interested to know if your manufactured briquettes burn faster as a consequence of the hole.

this is the best design i have seen. I've watched the video many times. I wonder, with more use, how is it working for you? are there any changes you would make? Do you find you have to adjust the depth stop often for different batches of pulp? thanks!

It could use a bit of pipe or an eyebolt or something on it somewhere to store the plug for the center round pipe. I wonder how much harder it would be to operate with 2 or more chambers?

I now use a funnel with integrated cover instead of a plug which can be seen in the Sketchup model.

Great design you should knock 2 or 3 up and sell them on Ebay, the best mix for the briquette is 90% sawdust 10% paper, i would be more than interested in buying one from you.

Have you ever considered modifying the unit to say create 5 bricks at a time would be a great time saver.Do you think the mechanical advantage here could provide enough compression to create a further 4 bricks?

I have a very rough CAD drawing which should give you the critical dimensions. It is drawn on Turbo CAD but I could save an Auto CAD file format if this is more useful. Let me know if you want to try it. I have added a funnel which speeds up loading. A sliding box would clash with the mechanism although there are machines used for making clay bricks that achieve this.

Очень интересная конструкция. Но почему не заглушить отверстие вверху вместо постоянного использования болта? Так ведь будет проще.

I have watched the video multiple times since yesterday. Are utterly impressed !!! . I would love to have one made; and use it at my home; to supplement my use of ordinary firewood. This morning; I had dialog with a local company/ metal-show; which may be able to manufacture the press for me. They had problems opening the google-sketch-file I sendt them, so they asked for PDF-files. Would it be possible for you to help me out with PDF-file-versions of your drawings ? I would be most greatful. Best regards, Ola

bamsefar1 I don't have PDFs, and from SketchUp I can only save SKP files. All I can offer is to make screen prints of each section and send them to you as JPGs. If this helps please send me your email address. It might be easier if your metal workshop installed the free version of SketchUp, this would give them a better feel for the mechanism. I wish you success.
