Bristell light sport aircraft needs no introduction. Bristell is one of the best selling LSA in GA, it is also top of the line premium product in that category. For a long time, Bristell like many other aircraft in it’s class have held on to the Rotax 912 100HP engine. But over the years many of their customers have asked for more power.
Well we have more power. The new Bristell fitted with a Rotax 915 turbo charged engine will produce 40% more power at 141 HP. Now we are still limited in the light sport category. That means this aircraft cannot go any faster than 120 kt. Even though the engine can do more, the speed has to be locked in at that. Where you do get to realize that extra boost in power is during your climb. The additional horsepower will allow the Bristell to climb at a much faster rate, 1700 ft per minute. And in cruise, while you’re locked in at 120 kts, 138 mph, you are not burning more fuel. The fuel economy remains low in the Rotax engine
Here are the specs on the New Bristell 915
Engine: Rotax 141 HP
Useful load: 500 lbs
Cruise: 135 - 150 mph
Price: $214K - $297k

Mike, your channel continues to grow and I celebrate your success. Basically anyone who wishes for a Bristellb but is more of a DIY builder, then the choice is obvious as the Sling TSI is all that for a fraction of the cost and can be modified/personalised where as a certified aircraft cannot. Bravo on your success, family and for documenting your personal build on youTube as your journey has and continues to inspire so many.

Mike - Thanks for covering this plane! I am currently looking at a Bristell with 915is as my next aircraft. It's pricey to be sure, but that's a relative thing to ones income. The LSA ASTM speed limit for anLSA is 120 KIAS. The Bristell LSA 915iS Turbo with ground adjustable prop will indicate 118 KIAS AT 12,500 FEET. It has a True Airspeed of 147 KIAS which is 170 MPH. That is fixed gear and ground adjustable prop...meets LSA ASTM standards.

Well done review. The Vne of 157 is the best I have seen in an LSA other than the new 2020 Sting S4. The price seems insane to me, but I suppose they know their customers, kind of like Cirrus charging 900,000 but still having a backlog of SR22 orders.

I'm am avionics tech of 23 years and having worked on the Cirrus SR-series for the last 16 years, and I can tell you people who buy a brand new Cirrus are quite wealthy and don't balk much at maintenance and options. We teach our customers to face the plane into the wind prior to pre-flight and again when stopping on the ramp. It can handle a 30 knot wind when faced into the wind. Us retired guys do not fly when the winds are 30 knots, but we do fly on 100 degree days where having the canopy open results in a very comfortable experience while taxiing.

I thought the 915 had the switch for take off climb and cruise ? You just turn the dial depending on what part of the flight you’re in?
@andrewmorris3479
@andrewmorris3479 4 жыл бұрын
Kevin The dial is what is controlling the pitch of the propeller which changes engine RPM. This particular aircraft is a SLSA and is not allowed to have a propeller that can change its pitch on the fly thus no dial is present on this one. Only throttle is needed on this one to control the engine manifold and RPM. Similar to being stuck in 3rd gear for takeoff and cruise.
@louismancuso7128
@louismancuso7128 4 жыл бұрын
There is an Air Master prop with Sensenich blades that has that switch. We are looking into that for the future. Right now that prop is not approved on an LSA. Some owners make the plane an ELSA and add items that could be questioned.

It's interesting that they are starting to skirt the speed limits :) I think FAA should open LSA top speed and maybe only encourage moderate landing speeds. Keep the weight limit. I wonder how fast it can go at altitude. VL3 915 can do 380km/h which is bordering on decent.

@@martyryan2529 This conversation was about an Australian report and has nothing to do with an accident that occurred in Ireland. Do you have all the data from that crash? Where's the link? I have the data on the bogus Australian Report. Why? Because I own a Bristell and have the documentation from the FAA. Planes crash. All over the world. Some are from bad designs and some are from bad piloting or bad instructors. The Bristell has now been dissected by the FAA twice (only because of this reckless Aussie report). And now twice deemed safe and within the safety standards from the FAA. Why was that plane in a flat spin? Do you know that they followed the POH on how to do an engine on and engine off stall? There is a protocol for these maneuvers. If you go outside those parameters, you put your life at risk. In any airplane. FAA has removed spin training from US training. Instead they teach "DO NOT SPIN ANY PLANE". I've stalled my Bristell several times and it never went into a spin. NEVER. You need to be more sensitive to facts. I'm curious what your expertise is in...What do you fly?

Granted, I don't know anything about the LSA side of aviation, but I'm an avionics tech with 23 years experience, and I know for $289k you can get some very well restored Bonanzas for that kind of money. That being said, there may be more flexibility with experimental and LSA aircraft. I just prefer staying on the certified side of things. Still a beautiful aircraft. I'd make some changes to the panel if possible, but very nice.
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 4 жыл бұрын
yeah they are too expensive, although rotax is partly to blame. I thought I would have to shell out 100-150k to get into aviation but then I discovered fractional ownership. local club had a used one for sale as 1/8 fraction, suddenly I owned an LSA that's always available and being maintained for free for less than 10k. Even though we are 8 owners, it's very rarely used so it makes so much sense. Even if such a club isn't available right by you you can make one. Look for an interesting plane, gather a few people. It could be 4 buyers at first and then you can look for more owners if you want to dilute it more. Just a 4 way split really cuts down the cost and of course 8 way is like it's free. I bought a plane and it hardly registered in my finances. so yes GA is in a very sorry state and we need several revolutions but there is a good way even today. Next I'd like to co buy a VL3 915 her in Europe. With retractable gear. It goes almost 400km/h at altitude and that's almost workable speeds. And costs 'nothing' to fly. 1/5 that of an old junker Cessna.

great looking airplane.... limiting light sport to 120 seems counter productive to the aviation industry. Why is it limited to 120?
@corybeaulieu1064

I can't say for sure, but likely because it's not a certified aircraft and pilot training requirements. 🤷‍♂️

The limit is an indicated air speed limit. The Bristell 915 can cruise at 170 MPH while indicating 118 kts.

Light sport rules are expected to change in the next few years. 1. Increased weight to 2000 + 2. Constant speed prop 3. Increased speed to 150 knots 4. Four place aircraft. www.bydanjohnson.com/start-the-countdown-four-years-will-bring-huge-changes-to-light-sport-aircraft/

How does it make it in the LSA when it exceeds 120kts?

Many LSA can actually go faster than 120 kts. The speed is clocked out at 120 to remain in that category

As a flight instructor, I have never understood why a plane such as this, with significantly more advanced capabilities and avionics, is not rated to fly in IMC when the C172 that we train out of is borderline falling apart at the seams with outdated avionics and is rated to fly in the clouds. I wish we could eventually upgrade to a platform such as this or similar one day.

The Bristell can fly IFR in IMC when equipped with a certified Avionics such as a GNX375 or GTN650 and the pilot is IFR rated. The plane needs to be re-registered as an ELSA which costs $1500. As an ELSA the owner can do his own maintenance.

Good narrative but rotax is still absurdly complex and vulnerable to coolant leaks/failure. Bristell should listen to Farry S. and have a Jabiru 3300 option.. Less expensive to buy plus half the scheduled maintenance and 1/4 the time required to properly, legally preflight.

Bodyframe.... its fuselage.. terminology please. Even with the normally aspirated Rotax and 914 too, there no need for the pilot to calculate anything for the engine. Fadec means that the computer regulates the engine parameters, injection timing and such based on several sensors.

Correcting someone for proper phraseology/terminology is like calling in an airstrike on your own position. At the same time, go before an Examiner for an oral exam and see if you pass calling the fuselage of an airplane a "body frame ".

@@georges. Maybe not in US. But most civil aviation authorities have differing definitions of what an LSA or a UL is. And although it is UL by weight the VL3 may not be considered Ul in a lot of countries because of the speed.
