@@russellblampied just watched that Russel. Brought back memories of our time on the K&A. Really liked Bath Before getting our boat we used to take our camper to Bath Marina site occasionally and walk into the city for a meal and a few drinks! For me, it’s still the best city we have visited in this country. We spent one new year on the canal above the rugby ground. Amazing Really like that BSA 600 on your channel too!

Back in the 1970s my family mover down from London to Lydney as my father was the works superintendent on the Severn Wye Cable tunnel built from behind the Aust service area under the old Severn Bridge to Beachley Point in the Army Apprenticeship College grounds and on under the River Wye to Stonehouse. In our spare time we water skied off the old Ferry slip way at Beachley next to the Ferry Inn. We used the Shoots Channel to train beginners as the waters were a bit calmer and they didn't fall off so often. But being the 2nd fastest river in the world for the rise and fall of the tide great care had to be taken. So hats off to you doing it aboard a narrow boat. I once watched a tug and string of 3 barges enroute to Lydney plywood with logs, the last barge was ahead of the tug as she passed the Shoots. I found out later this was very common. There is works ongoing to reconnect the canal back up from the boat yard just off the Sharpness Canal to Stroud, so that woill be a good detour if when it joins up. Thanks for posting and reminding me off the good old days on and under the Severn, Stay safe.

Brave stuff, well done. Thank goodness the engine didn't let you down on that powerful section of water. Bad enough on the trent of course, but better there than in the Severn estuary. Thanks for documenting and sharing your experience! 👍

Good work. Fortunately for my wallet I only had to spend three hours in Portishead marina when I did the same voyage. It’s an expensive do especially if you take a pilot from Bristol to Portishead (which is unnecessary) and what with the fuel polishing. But like you say it’s well worth it.

"Well that's our first tidal river done" Congrats that's the one that nobody else does, the only other you tube one I recall was the wye invader. To be fair I think they were very knowledgeable guys because they also took it up the wye on a flood tide so they could clear the weir to get as far as Monmouth. Not that I am suggesting you attempt this, but worth watching the video to watch them fight the river at one stage. Well done, you have cracked Everest, Kilimanjaro will be a piece of cake after this.

Hi Simon Yes I have seen a video of the Wye Invader 2 going around The Noose and over the flooded Maizemore Weir. It looked horrendous!! Very brave but no doubt very experienced boaters. Glad you enjoyed the video. There’s one coming up shortly about the tidal Trent that went a bit wrong for us!!

You were lucky (or I was unlucky). Came down the other way last year in June. Left Sharpness at 5.30am, coming through the second bridge a Westerly wind sprung up unexpectedly. Water was coming up to 1/2 way up the cratch - I was looking thru cratch glass and then seawater. But....... Still amazing fun and I would recommend the trip to anyone.

Sometimes , it is simply staggering the stupidity and foolhardy of some people . A narrowboat simply cant cope with the unoredictable tidal eddies and bad weather that can come from nowhere in the Bristol Channel . A narrowboat, once it has broken down can only "heave to" which means it lies in the trough of the waves sideways on and will turn turtle . A narrowboat with just a hull speed of pehaps 5 mph cannot punch a 5knot current and anybody foolhardy enough to attempt the Sharpness /Avonmouth trip without 1/ an escort vessel equiped for life saving 2 / a competant crew that can read a chart and NOT rely on electronic aids 3/ Lifejackets Flares and a life raft on hand in case of emergency . Crew should be briefed on evacuation and the Swansea coastguard alerted beforehand and when the destination is reached . I would also have on hand a good holding anchor , and a Bible .

No back slaps from me. That was a stupid thing to do, that river is an absolute killer, even for proper vessels with powerful engines let alone doing it in a bath tub for a lark. I went to sea school at Sharpness and saw that river every day. You were very lucky.
