I was fortunate enough to be a teenager during the 80's with all the great music that came out during that era. While also growing up listening to the music of the 60's & 70's.....I miss it all! lol. Feeling pret-ty geriatric now, yep. The summer this song came out (and was *ungodly* popular), I was working the last shift at a crappy retail job as a cashier. Every night, the instant the last customer was out the door and the doors were locked, the guys who worked in the music department (they still sold '45s, that's how ancient I am!) would put this on and blare it out over the loudspeakers. It will always and forever be the "counting up my till" song to me.

all the Build Up was on the studio version of the song, it was not just for a stage performance, every single sound that every instrument is exactly how it was recorded.
@theschnauzers
@theschnauzers 3 жыл бұрын
There’s a lot that needs to be said to appreciate what this is. The song was written and composed by Phil during his divorce from his first wife. Phil has said he doesn’t know where the lyrics specifically came from by it did capture the anger he felt at the time. He wrote all the instrumental lines of this song in his bedroom as well as all the other songs from his first solo album in 1981. The Miami Vice connection was its historic use to the soundtrack of the pilot episode where the visual editing was designed to fit the song midway through the episode. And boy, did that set the mood. While other Phil Collins songs were used in later season (Phil even had a guest starring role in one episode), In the Air Tonight would later appear in the film Miami Vice. Michael Mann loved Phil Collins and Glenn Fry of the Eagles who also wrote songs for the show and appeared in a couple of episodes as well. This live version you used was recorded inParis at a concert in 2003. It is simply the best staged live performance I’ve ever watched. In designing this, Phil and the band set out to slowly layer in every line of instrumentation that is used save the drums. They substituted the percussion for the drums until the iconic mid-song drum fill. Even when one knows it’s coming, it still catches you by surprise. After Phil “retired” from performing due to medical problems caused from thirty plus years of drumming, he slowly came around the idea of using his son Nic (born in 2001) as a drummer. There’s a video on You Tube, when Nic backed his father on drums at a “secret performance” at Nic’s private school in Miami using the school band. Phil then had Nic as his drummer at a few private charities events prior to 2016, and he invited Nic to professionally perform on drums at the 2016 US (Tennis) Open at age 15. Nis then became a regular member a Phil’s band for the Not Dead Yet tour from 2016 to 2019. In the meantime, the other two members of Genesis got to be familiar with Nic’s drumming expertise and invited Nic to join Genesis in 2020, when Nic was 19. (Incredibly Phil was 19 when he cofounded Genesis back in 1969-1970.) Which is to say that you ought to fin on KZfaq some of the various videos from that tour where Nic is backing his dad on In the Air Tonight. It’s just as remarkable as this 2003 performance.

So glad you mentioned the Cadbury ad. I saved that to my phone. I admire the talent that guy had to do it. I read an interview where he said it was difficult to see what he was doing, and how hard it was to hang on to the drumsticks because of the gloves he wore. I was amazed at how real the makeup artists did to make his face look like a real gorilla. And how his nose and lip moved. I also watched an interview with Phil when he was telling about when Cadbury called him and asked if he would mind if they used his song using a guy in a gorilla suit. He immediately said sure. He also said people thought it was actually him in the suit because he guy was so good at playing the song. I’m also glad you appreciated the build up. So many reactors don’t. You did a great reaction to this. Thanks!!

Also, they say, there's a difference in being "cocky" and " confident." While they were preparing and he was walking around getting ready, he had such CONFIDENCE, almost a look like, " I've got this!" It's effortless to him, and that's what makes him and this song so great! Btw, never seen a live version! Loved it! React to Aerosmith for us, there's my favs - Jaded and You're my angel! The song was written probably in 1980, because it was released, both as a single and on the full album ( _Face Value_ ), in January and April 1981, respectively. You need to check out Genesis. I'd recommend "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", the title track off of their final album with original frontman, Peter Gabriel (who left to embark on a quite impressive solo career - check out "Solsbury Hill" and "Sledgehammer"), and "Land of Confusion", off of their 1986 album, _Invisible Touch_ , with Phil Collins. (Also, check out Disturbed's cover of "Land of Confusion".) Fair warning with Genesis' video for "Land of Confusion", though; it's quite a trip. If you want a Genesis song where the video won't make you feel like you've dropped acid, check out "That's All".
