There's No Mystery about this song. And for decades people keep repeating stupid stories about it, based upon the song being played for various Miami Vice scenes. It's a song about Phil's Divorce. He's 'talking' to the man who his wife cheated with...and to his wife. The song is Phil stating that he "...saw what they did...' and his marriage has all been a 'pack of lies' And that it's all coming to a head...he's had enough....thus the "I can feel it coming in the air tonight' He saying that's when he lets them know that he knows.

This song came out in 1981. Here's some history I think you'll enjoy. In 1975 Genesis singer Peter Gabriel left the band to pursue a solo career. After a lengthy auditioning process, during which Phil sang backup vocals for applicants, Collins became the band's lead vocalist. One of their record executives was overheard as saying, "This will never work, Phil doesn't have the face to front a band." In February 1981, Collins released his debut solo album Face Value. He signed with Virgin Records and WEA for American distribution in order to distance himself from the label, with a close up of his face on the cover.

Wow, I love it when people know the history as well as or better than I do. I had never heard the record exec quote. I do know that one of the things that was always important to them was that to join the band you have to have a good sense of humor. I imagine touring is tough on people that get along well. To tour with a humorless dolt would be maddening. Thx for the facts. Assuming you're fellow fan, do you get asked "Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins?" I always have, but I never felt the need to choose. I wrote on my hs notebooks "Phil Collins is God! Genesis is All!" and continued listing other members as demi-gods (including Gabriel) and god-like people (Chester Thompson).

@@jdice6868 Chester was one of Frank Zappa's drummers. He wasn't the first to tour with Genesis once Gabriel left. That was Bill Bruford from King Crimson and Yes. Phil's son Nic took over that position in 2017 when he was 16 years old. Went on to tour with Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford's Mike and the Mechanics. Also of note, Phil wasn't the original drummer in Genesis. So that question of Gabriel or Collins has never interested me in answering. They've gone through many line up changes over the years. Everyone will have their favorites.

@@bettyrose959 Phil was 19 when he took over on the drums for Genesis in 1970. So it seems appropriate that his son is only a few years younger when he started. I look forward to seeing what he chooses to explore musically. Take care!

I have seen both Genesis and Phil live about 4 times, I also got invited to meet him in 1988. Very down to earth guy, but you have to be there at the concert to appreciate it. Phils music was always better when his personal life was going down the toilet. When he was happy in his personal life, his music or writing was not as impactful. One time Phil played along side Chester Thompson, the other drummer in the band. Just two drummers either side of the stage.... it was just electrifying. Sadly Phil is not a trained singer and he had to get injections for his throat, this caused problems. Now, he is in a wheel chair and its hard to see him and how his health has been affected. But the ruled the world in the 1980's.

Genesis was the first band I saw live back in the late seventies. Peter Gabriel had left and Phil had taken over. A Trick of the Tail is still one of my all time favourite albums and still have my original vinyl copy. Have seen both Peter and Phil as solo artists numerous times and am glad to have grown up with them as part of the soundtrack of my teenage/youth.

The urban legend included the claim that the guilty man was sent front row seats as if he had won them only to be called out in front of the arena. It's not true, but it's a fun story. When he toured in '86 I went with my sister and brother. It was my first concert. I went again after I was married. I know the second was Madison Square Garden. I can't remember if the first was MSG or Nassau Coliseum, but they were both incredible shows. As the crowd leaves MSG they are still singing the last song of the encore (Take Me Home). It is an event that stays with you.
