In 1990 the US enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act. This law assured that all public spaces and government buildings would have equal access for the handicapped. That means they had to make wider hallways and ramps to accommodate wheelchairs. There are lots of other accommodations you would find as well. All public restrooms had to have a stall large enough for a wheelchair to roll into. All buildings with more than one floor had to have elevators if they were public buildings. Even our sports stadiums have this type of access. Luckily for the Beesleys it makes life easier if you're pushing a pram / stroller.

Yes, any buildings built - or renovated - after the Act went into effect must meet these standards.

Seems like a video topic Laurence from Lost in the pond should cover is the ADA the American disability act where nearly everything must have ramps and or elevators. So then they don't feel excluded. (China and Japan also, within reason, also provide these features.) The bigger the city the better the public transit, the smaller the more non existent it is. It would cost more money than the net worth of the Saudi royal family to raise the whole US's public transportation game to match the UK.

Traffic in most cities is slow and crowded, particularly at rush hours. But, they are talking here about the traffic driving to a 40,000-50,000 seat stadium for a game!!! I was in the "tube" in London during a soccer game. It was not only crowded but scary, especially at the end of the game when the hooligans of the losing team filled the stations.

There are so many Teslas in San Francisco. Tesla started in CA so they’ve been building the infrastructure / charging stations for years. SF has great public transportation and they even have self driving cars.

The original Tesla factory was just across the Bay in Fremont where Tesla took over a failed GM/Japanese (I forget which company) joint project. There are 5-10 Tesla charging stations in the garage of my condo. Now that Tesla has moved their headquarters to Texas because (1) Elon Musk got angry when CA made him close the factory for a while during the worst of Covid and (2) he doesn't want to pay state income tax on his $46 billion pay bonus, it will be interesting to see if he can convince Texans to buy Teslas (I'm not holding my breathe).

You see Tesla mostly in California, Florida, Texas, and Seattle. Other places not so much. I think it is an infrastructure problem.

They drove around in LA. They apparently didn't listen to the people who don't know much about San Francisco and advised them to get a car there, so they used public transit. A car in the city of San Francisco would be a huge problem because parking is hard to find and expensive. On the most popular routes, the busses come every 10 or 15 minutes and no, they won't sit at the stop waiting for someone strolling up to the stop. But if you miss the bus, another one will be along in minutes on most routes. The city also has a policy of making no resident (or tourist) walk more than 2 blocks to a bus stop and surprisingly often the bus will take you directly to your destination. Almost never will you have to transfer more than once. Finally, the city has light rail (much of it underground), surface streetcars and the famous cable cars besides busses. And all else failing, there's Uber/Lyft. It's a compact city, 7 miles square, so it's rare for an Uber ride to cost more than $15 and many will be under $10. That's competitive with what it might cost you to park if you chose to drive. Although I own 2 cars, kept at my vacation home, I haven't kept a car in San Francisco now for over 20 years and wouldn't want one here.

It's the next pier along the waterfront from Fisherman's Wharf and, like FW, it's a tourist trap though with more of possible interest to locals. I used to go there just to watch that species known as the "tourist" almost like watching creatures in a zoo. But the fact is, a large colony of California sea lions have taken over the floating boat docks next to the pier and are fun to watch also. Also, the only In-N-Out Burger joint in SF is near there.

Public transportation varies greatly, from place to place. The subway in LA? Don't use it. It's not safe. All public transportation in NYC is fine, reasonably safe. Most public transportation is unreliable, at best. There are still places that don't have it at all. It's best to just rent a car, if you're not familiar with it.

I'm not sure why but it seems like Europeans enjoy shopping because they do it every 1, 2 or 3 days. In America most of us do not enjoy grocery shopping and we only do it once a week or even once every 2 weeks. We buy in bulk because A. it's cheaper and B. it last longer so we don't have to buy it again. When I see Europeans buying eggs they only buy 6 at a time when we buy 12 to 18 at a time, the same with milk, we buy it by the gallon and Europeans buy it by half litre or litre?

I think part of the difference is that our homes, pantries, fridges, etc are bigger in the US so we have more storage. Also, in the US, more people live longer distances to a grocery store which makes it expensive and difficult to get to the store more frequently especially if they have a decent sized family to feed.

SF is getting speed cameras. The official policy is that you have to be going at least 11 mph over the legal limit to get a ticket. On freeways, I usually set my cruise control at 5 mph over the limit and everybody passes me.

You never HAVE to turn right on red. Once you stop you MAY turn right on red at your own discretion provided it's clear, unless signed otherwise. Most major cities will have public bus systems, if not some form of light rail. Pleasantly surprised they felt it met their needs, though generally not as extensive as I've seen over there.

Who gives a crap about public transport in the United States.. especially when you are for some reason trying to compare it to the UK? Makes no sense to do that. You keep forgetting the UK is a tiny little island with tiny little cars on tiny little roads with tiny little everything.. It feels like you have seen and watched a thousands videos talking about how big the United States is but just don't fathom it in reality.. we don't care about public transport when it's so damn big and trains and buses suck because there is no damn privacy or anything like that.. can't just turn around in a split second can't do anything you want to do.. You're around a bunch of crazy people. Vehicles are superior. Don't know why the British think it's so awesome to have trains and buses over your own vehicle.. 🤦‍♂️
