Greatest ever goal scorer, maybe, but I don't think that he's our greatest ever player, IMHO. Jimmy Johnstone, John Thomson, maybe? Although I do agree there should be a permanent memorial to him and also to all of the Lisbon Lions. And definitely to John Thomson, who literally gave his life playing for the hoops.

@@Derek-qu8qi he was. And quite possibly could be, but voting is subjective and someone else could've been voted as the club's greatest ever player, not meaning to take anything away from him. I was lucky enough to see Jinky playing in the flesh and he was absolutely magnificent. But there have been many magnificent players to walk through Parkhead's gates. Any one of them could have been voted as the club's greatest player. Jimmy McGrory being one of them. IMHO there should be a permanent memorial to all of these great players. Unfortunately I don't think that we will see another quite on their level in our lifetime. The only one to come close is Henrik Larsson, which is sad for such a prestigious football club. HH

As a former Scottish born Presbyterian protestant I am completely in agreement Gary. The treatment of Catholics in Scotland has been criminal for years. So-called Christian protestants in high positions have abused their privilege against all Christian teachings. I detest them. I packed in my beliefs years ago.

There is a strong argument that Jimmy McGrory was Celtic's greatest ever player. Much of his career was played in struggling Celtic sides, who weren't winning that much, only 3 league titles in 13 or 14 years. Yet he kept scoring huge numbers of goals, season in, season out. Jimmy was an unstoppable force of nature. The story about Celtic trying to sell him to Arsenal then cutting his wage when he refused is well-known and a sad reflection on the people who ran the club back then.

Great video young man my dad used to regale me with the stories of Mr McGrory's goalscoring feats and I knew all about him. He went on to become the Celtic manager but that was in name only as the board essentially picked the team. Some of the Lisbon Lions and in particular Bertie Auld, who the manager signed from Maryhill Juniors, say he was too nice a man to be a manager. In 1965, the year I was born, he made way for the late, great Jock Stein who took the manager's role but only if he had total autonomy over player selection and picking the team. The chairman Sir Robert Kelly reluctantly agreed but the club had been in the doldrums for so long he had to acquiesce to Mr Stein's demands. What followed was a decade of unprecedented success and winning the European Cup in 1967 in Estadio Nacional in Lisbon where Celtic annihilated Internazionale of Milan 2-1 in the final. Celtic could've and probably should've scored double figures that's why I say we annihilated them. They were beaten long before we equalised never mind before we scored the winner. Forget Rinus Michels being the creator of Dutch total football Celtic were playing that style of football in that final. It was a victory for fast attacking football over the dour Italian Cattenacio style of play and it was probably Celtic conceding a penalty after seven minutes that cost Inter the game as they shut up shop and let the hoops come at them, naively believing they could counter wave after wave of constant Celtic pressure, they were totally wrong. We reached the final again in 1970 but lost to a very good Feyenoord side who we took too lightly after we dispatched Leeds United home and away in the semi-final, Leeds were supposed to be the best side in Britain at the time. Celtic played them off the park in both games and thought the hard work was done. Like Inter in 67 they were wrong, Mr Stein readily admitted that he told his players that these guys were no match for us but he underestimated how good Feyenoord were a costly mistake and one he never repeated again. Two semi-final appearances in the European Cup in 69 and again in 74 proved that the Lisbon result wasn't lucky or a fluke and Celtic were up there with the best teams in the world at the time on merit. God bless you young man your video was a treat to watch HH

He is certainly not forgotten by us Celtic fans ! And to correct you, it was NOT bad luck that limited his Scotland caps it was because he was a Roman Catholic playing for Celtic - SFA and Scottish society was very much anti-catholic back then and indeed up until very recently, look at how few caps the Lisbon lions got compared to the more unsuccessful Glasgow Rangers (RIP) side of the late 60’s/70’s.

Well done on this video buddy. I think a lot of people in the modern day will probably scoff and say it’s only Scotland, judging him by the power dynamics and quality of todays football, not appreciating that in those days football and the balance of power was completely different and that Scotland and Scottish football was something of a powerhouse. The guy is a legend. Still appreciated and sang about at Celtic park and a real shame that he doesn’t have more widespread recognition but it’s understandable to an extent. Similarly, if you look at George Best, whom everybody rightly recognises as an absolute magician, you can compare Jinky Johnstone who was from the same era and every bit as mercurial. He of course won the European Cup with Celtic the year before Best done so with Manchester United and played in another European Cup final in 1970 but lost to Feyenoord. At di Stefanos Real Madrid testimonial they opted to play the European champions of the time - Celtic - and Jimmy Johnstone ran rings around them such that even the notoriously demanding Madrid fans gave Ole’s whenever he got on the ball. Quite a tribute from them. You can find the highlights on KZfaq if you’re so inclined. The Don Revie Leeds United team that they beat en route to the 1970 final sung his praises and tell of just how unplayable he was in those matches - which I believe still holds the record attendance for European matches. Also, he was part of the famous Wembley Wizards tan who beat reigning world champions England in their own patch, as well as a number of other notable games vs the Auld enemy. George Beat rightly deserves his place in the pantheon of the greats but Jinkys greatness - legitimate, world-beating greatness - is somehow overlooked outside of Scotland. He never makes the lists of best players of all time or even best wingers of all time but his ability surely deserves it. He won 9 in a row again when Scottish football was at the zenith of the European game. In 1967 Celtic won the European Cup, Rangers were beaten in the final of the Cup Winners Cup by Bayern. In 1970 Celtic were beaten in the European Cup final and in 1972, Rangers win the Cup Winners Cup so all modern criticisms of Scottish football don’t apply. It could hold its own with the best of Europe and come out on top. Jinky is considered the greatest ever Celtic player and rightly so but it’sa dam shame that his legendary status is confined only to Scotland (and perhaps arguably Ireland)

Only until recently, great Celtic players not getting a game for Scotland was a common thing. If I told you that the great Lisbon Lions Captain Billy McNeil only amassed 30 caps in11 yrs you'd call me a liar. Jimmy Johnstone had 23 caps, Tommy Gemmell 18 caps, Bobby Murdoch 12 caps, Bobby Lennox 10 caps, Willie Wallace 7 caps, Stevie Chalmers 5 caps(3 goals) Ronnie Simpson 5 caps, Bertie Auld 3 caps and Jim Craig 1!!
@Scipionic1941
@Scipionic1941 Жыл бұрын
There weren’t so many international matches in those days, Mal. Ronnie McKinnon was McNeil’s contemporary and got 28 caps. Henderson had slightly more caps than Johnstone. Remember too that the team was eleven players with latterly one only substitute. All four would be in the team squad in modern times and probably all four used in the match. Imagine McNeil and McKinnon together in central defence. Imagine Johnstone mesmerising the opposition for an hour and then Henderson comes on!

Great video. Bit of insight to the International caps . Jimmy McGrory was not the first or the last world class Celtic player to be constantly snubbed by Scottish selectors and subsequent managers for caps. The lack of caps throughout the wonderful Lisbon Lions team tells its own story of institutional sectarianism and bias against Celtic , it’s players and fans by the SFA. You just need to research the “attempt to stop us flying of the Irish tricolour” incident. Things got better from the 1970s when managers picked squads and teams .

Great video.... thank you for this as it was a bit a revelation for me. I am an Englishman and an Arsenal supporter, but when it comes to Scottish football, I am a Celtic fan through and through, so really found this interesting.

my dad taught me about mcgrory when i was very young. we watched larsson, but we heard over and over again about jinky johnstone and bobby murdoch and jimmy mcgrory. mcgrory would score non-stop bullet headers with heavy waterlogged footballs (heading is a lost art in football). he would also score goals with that clumsy ball while wearing heavy, encumbering boots. he would do all of that on poorly maintained muddy or dusty pitches. the tackles were brutal and crunching, with metal studs and much less effective shin protection. people are tempted to say "it was easy to score goals 100 years ago compared to now" or "getting 1000 goals isnt impressive in 1920 or 1930", but the opposite is true, if anything. glad you describe some of that at around 12:00. even the aspect of how modern balls fly around with the "knuckleball" phenomenon in a way that was impossible back then, is worth mentioning. these balls flew straight. goals were poached, they were not spectacular cannons from 40 yards out. the best goalscorers were geniuses of positioning and instinct and of outplaying defenses. and as other people say about 8:30-9:30, it was because he was a catholic and a celtic player that he wasnt more favoured for the international team. i can even imagine how inclined the protestant majority would be to accuse him of deliberately playing poorly against ireland. this is what we deal with around here to this day. in school in the 2000s, i heard kids saying the same kind of stuff about celtic players. you have players like aiden mcgeady and then later james mccarthy (someone i actually kicked about with as a kid) deciding to play for ireland instead of scotland to avoid that stuff. who can blame them. they even accuse hibernian (another club with catholic history) of purposefully playing poorly against celtic and vice versa. any excuse, they take it. the old firm divide. "scotlands shame" as it gets euphemised. and small correction, at 4:25 its "celts" just like "celtic" and "celsius", not "kelts" like "kilt".

Excellent video. You did a great job in telling the story of James Edward McGrory. A Celtic and all time football legend. His loyalty to Celtic was way more than those that ran the club deserved, but not the fans who are the true owners of the club and who will never forget this great man. CTH 🍀🍀🍀

First-class video. The Celtic board in those days, and until they were ousted by Fergus McCann, were a money-grubbing disgrace - and their treatment of our greatest goal scorer was the greatest disgrace of all. Jimmy was quoted as saying: “McGrory of Arsenal never would have sounded as great as McGrory of Celtic.” As for his lack of Scotland caps, I’m afraid form had very little to do with it. Other factors peculiar to Scotland were involved. 🇮🇪💚🇮🇪

My now deceased father William used to tell me stories of Jimmy’s fantastic achievements. Well before dad was around Jimmy dated my grandmother Isabella Desson from Galashiels for a period of time. Dads hero’s were Jimmy and Charlie Tully.
