In an official release published hours ago, researchers unveiled a 32 foot-long skeleton of the largest sea dragon ever recorded in U.K.'s history.
The 10+ meter long skeleton of Temnodontosaurus trigonodon dates back to approximately 180 million years, and was discovered during the draining of a lagoon in the Rutland Water Nature Reserve in Oakham, United Kingdom. The initial discovery was made by Conservation Team Leader, Joe Davis, and set off a two month long excavation by local paleontologists.
Dr. Dean Lomax, Nigel Larkin, Dr. Mark Evans, and Dr. Emma Nicholls led the excavation, along with the help of numerous volunteers. The task now falls in the hands of museum preparators and volunteers to painstakingly open the plaster jackets and carefully remove sediment encasing the bones.
