Hi Preston! Me and my friends will have an Interrail trip in July and we want to spend 4 days in the UK, mainly in Scotland. We love scenic trains and steam railways and plan to take Bo'ness Kinneil, Highland Lines etc. We will start from London and finish with Glasgow to take the coach to Belfast. Do you have any suggestions for us? We are interested in both engineering and management of railways. Thank you very much!

One thing I've noticed with Azuma is the lack locomotives like the CLASSES 43 90 And 91. They probably could make every set that travels between Edinburgh and London 10 coaches may be even 11. You forget how much platform space was taken up by the locomotives and DVTS. Small stations would struggle but majority of the East Coast network could certainly cope. Something for LNER and other 800 operators to think about.

Those seats without windows are being replaced with extra luggage storage shortly. I was having a good natter with the guard on Azuma 800104 last week. Apparently the number of complaints about the lack of luggage space has being enormous. There's also talk (neither the guard, nor myself can see it happening) of half of Coach A on the 9 car sets being converted to a luggage compartment.

Great video, i live with the East coast Main Line less than 20 yards from my house, l will miss the HST engine noise as it races past, just like l missed the Deltics when they stopped running, (I am showing my age now). Electric trains don't have that chest thump that engine revs of older locos have, you can hear a class 37 from miles away when they run at night. Love the videos, keep up the good work

Hi Paul, as you know, the trains that the 8oos are replacing were designed as 225kph=140mph. Although they had their speeds limited to 125, it does seem that we ought to have have done better in the last 40 years since they were built. Similar story to the West Country where the 800s have replaced the HST with little improvement in timings for the 5.5 hours to Penzance. BTW, I wouldn't be allowed to say such mildly negative things about the railway on Geoff Marshall's site! Good video as always and, in contradistinction, an unbiased view of travel, warts and all!

Paul Lucas, I love your UK train videos. I'm from the USA, and lived in London 2004-2007 (and read BSc Biomedical Science, intercalating in Craniofacial Science at King's College London). I still visit the UK on a yearly basis. I have travelled all over the UK on trains including Virgin, LNER, GWR, and others. I just went to Dundee on the LNER from London King's Cross, on old Virgin stock. When I was leaving London King's Cross yesterday on the LNER ex-Virgin train stock, I saw the new Azuma train on the next platform. Last week I was on the new Eurostar trainset from London St. Pancras to Rotterdam, and back on Thalys and Eurostar to London. Trains are the best way to travel across the UK and Europe in my experience.

US / Canada are vast nations. Towns are far flung. Laying high-speed track, maintaining the entire length of track and via-ducts and bridges would be a herculean task and very expensive affair, too. Easier to just have two airports at either ends and fly out. Much cheaper and cost effective. No bullet train in the world can yet match 900 kph plane speed. So, why bother? Leave these trains to smaller nations like Japan and European.

Me and my parents travel to our native country of Sweden every year from the United States (via SAS). We fly into Copenhagen and then take a 2 hour high speed train up to Båstad, Sweden. Very nice ride and it seems like that train, called Öresundståg, does have a lot of the features that this train has. One great part of the journey is that, a few minutes after pulling out of the airport, the train crosses the mighty Öresundsbridge and tunnel connecting Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden. That is always something really neat to see.

Love, because I love watching them and seeing how nice rail travel is in the UK and the rest of Europe; hate because nothing like that exists here in the US, although with Virgin Trains' plans for Florida and elsewhere, there is a sliver of hope. I am not a train traveler, but that said I would be very happy to travel on this train. Any way to reduce pollution from the diesel engine that is on its way out is a game changer. Now I know that these new trains also run on diesel because of that having no electric cables. But the engines on these are a lot cleaner.

The best train toilet I’ve seen was on the train from Budapest to Bratislava. Spacious and spotless. Compartments were available to book, but we happily fit 7 of us into two unbooked ones. 2 and 1/2 hours journey between capital cities, and all for €9 (£7.30 odd!). England has a long way to go to catch up with European railways. In my opinion, the only option is to nationalise the railways!

3:14 It may be a small thing for some people, but I really like that seating scheme. I really dislike the aircraft style seating rows you get in many trains (especially here in Germany). I much prefer opposed seating, as it makes the cabin seem more spacious, gives you extra room for luggage, often includes better tables and aligns with the windows, thus avoiding the annoyance of window seats without windows to look out of. I find that particularly annoying, when I paid extra for the pleasure of reserving such a "window" seat. Opposed seating also makes it easier to find and get into seats on busy trains. There is more space to get through and people are less likely to pile their luggage onto the seat next to them (in part because of the space for luggage between opposed seating groups). Having the single seats on one side is an excellent idea and gives you the best of both worlds. Cloth seats are IMO also far superior to the slippery and uncomfortable leather seats you get in first class on German trains.

I love the leather seats in first class on the 225s and HSTs that the azumas are replacing. As always, LNER have good food in first class. In the winter there, it was chicken chasseur with crushed new potatoes. I will download the trainpal app. I know about split ticketing and i always find good deals on the west coast route. The Azumas look better than pendolinos which I travel a lot from my home town of Glasgow. Better seat to window pitches. I find pendolinos quite claustrophobic for an intercity train.

Its really a huge difference between train ticket prices in the UK and Sweden/Norway. A trick to get a cheaper ticket in the UK is apparently to split up the ticket halfway to the destination, but then you need to have some extensive knowledge about the UK railway system. It is unfortunate that UK has been split up in so many private railway companies making rail planning a bit more difficult. In Sweden we still have the state owned SJ, which has now won the tender for driving trains at 7 stretches in Norway.

The designers have not really addressed some of the fundamental problems which go back to the time when mark 3 stock was introduced. 1) Seats misaligned to windows. This is primarily a matter of getting the bay dimension correct in the first place. If this is 1.90 metres there is sufficient legroom for everyone and all the seats can align. 2) The luggage space is in the wrong place. People will not use the large luggage areas as they are not secure. The optimum location for luggage is between seat backs but this means that most of the seating should be in facing pairs as in the mark 1 and mark 2 stock. As soon as the seats are arranged in an airline configuration, this useful luggage space is lost. Given that it is too late to change the fundamental design, the large luggage areas should be fitted with some means of securing cases eg with lockable cables and keys with a coin deposit system. Otherwise people are not going to use them. 3) Space next to sliding door pockets should be used for luggage or toilets or equipment cabinets. 4) The discomfort of the seats is due to insufficient lumbar support. This could easily be remedied by changing the shape of the foam inserts. 5) The vehicles are too long. The end space cannot be used for seating due to the tapered shape, and it cannot be use for entrance vestibules as there would be excessive platform gaps. 6) The vehicles are difficult to get on and off - indeed, hazardous - due to the design of the steps and the large gaps. Retractable steps should have been fitted. The excessive length of the vehicles is probably a factor. 7) The overall design of the trains is ugly, with a flat roof with lumps of equipment spread along the top, giving the trains a horrible skyline, rotten aerodynamics and likely problems with snow and rain. These items should have been faired into the roof, as an stock such as Electrostar series. 8) There is a huge gap between vehicles. This is also terrible both visually and aerodynamically. The space aught to be closed by rubber fairings or extended panels, or the vehicles bodies built out and used for equipment. There is probably quite a lot of equipment which could usefully be relocated here from under the floor or elsewhere.

I travelled in one in Standard class between Peterborough and Leeds a couple of days ago. My thoughts were: 1. There’s very little difference from the existing Mk 4 coaches. 2. The main improvement is a power socket for every seat. 3. There is less luggage room than in the Mk 4 coaches. That could be an issue when they’re running between London and Edinburgh in the main tourist season, it’s less of a problem when everyone is doing day trips on business.

Most of the main lines have a max speed of 125mph. The geometry of the tracks wouldn’t cater for higher speeds. The 61 mile long HS1 links London to the Channel Tunnel, it also has a 140mph commuter train from Kent to London. The shorter distances between most stations on the commuter routes wouldn’t benefit much from higher speeds. More trains would be more beneficial.

True. Faster trains would be pointless when they have to run on old tracks shared with slow commuters.

Nice work as ever, Paul! I've travelled fairly extensively on the GWR Class 800s and I've found them to be a noticeable step down in comfort compared to the HSTs they've replaced (although the legroom is more generous in comparison); that said I've tended to see more positive comments regarding the seats on the LNER Azuma so I look forward to finding out for myself in the near future when I return to uni in Leeds. Got to agree on how smart the red and white paint scheme is, somewhat reminiscent of the German ICEs which I'm also a big fan of!

But Canadians are not capable of big projects. The last one was the trans Canada railway which made confederation possible. Since then, Canadians think small, really small. A high speed train from Toronto to Montreal is essential. But.....we are so small minded we’d never do it. Pathetic, really.
@mrm7058
@mrm7058 4 жыл бұрын
@@julesmo323 I don't think the "4 people per sq. km" matter that much, because they are not evenly distributed. When I look at a map of Canada, I see cities like Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec. Close and large enough to make a good rail service between those cities reasonable.

Love your videos Paul. I think First Class on the Azumas is the biggest downgrade from the old trains, which used plush leather for their first class seats, whereas Azumas just use the same hard material as standard, albeit a larger seat. Though having travelled a couple of times on the Azumas, I'm less skeptical as I was, though it's devastating to see HSTs and 225s go!
