Britain's Supersonic Transport: The Mach 2.5 Vickers Swallow

The Vickers Swallow was a Mach 2.5 supersonic aircraft project headed by Barnes Wallis, working at the British aircraft company Vickers-Armstrongs.
The Vickers Swallow lacked conventional features, such as a vertical stabiliser and rudder, instead using the movement of variable geometry wings and swiveling engines mounted on pylons far out on the wing tips as its primary means of flight control.
Multiple roles were envisioned for the full-scale Swallow. It was initially viewed as suitable for a very long distance airliner; projections of its range would have enabled a non-stop England-Australia route to be served. Later on, the Swallow was increasingly viewed as a potential supersonic successor to the subsonic Vickers Valiant, one of the RAF's V bombers.

I watched this several times before I noticed, 0:23, The little waggle of the engine nacelles. I wondered what it was, then I realized that it was what a pilot of this aircraft would do to check for rudder function. Well done HazeGray!

Engines needed for control, and likely a single engine failure at critical time would result in a break up in flight just from the asymmetry in thrust. Plus all those engine mounts that not only have ot take full thrust, but also any expected overloads from flight conditions as well, and raising and lowering the crew cabin with all the associated cabling and controls as well.
@thisisnotajoke

No way they could have ever made those flimsy little connections between wings and engines stable enough to handle all the different loads in all regimes of flight!
@Dr_Mario2007

Since afterburning turbojet / fan engines are stupid powerful, I would expect them to snap off in the real life - there's no way that most alloys would have decent enough shear tensile strength to keep the jet engines from flying towards and off the wings especially breaking the sound barrier while at the same time the weight is the biggest concern - obviously you want to ensure some parts of planes to be light enough, especially at the tip of wings, Aluminum / Aluminium are actually pretty flexible.
@russchadwell

And, even a hard landing puts a great deal of torque force on the tips of the wings with the mass of two engines that far out. Plus, some have asked, "what happens if even just one engine quits during flight?"

Not only are the engines connected with very thin connections points, but the damn things are gimbaled as well!? You would need materials that are currently beyond our current level of materials science to pull this off. Looks amazing, and Gary Anderson would be proud.

Awesome. Having the wings fold back for taxiing was a nice touch. The pivoting engines were the Swallow's defining feature, though I doubt they'd have worked in practice. If it had been built, I imagine they'd have placed the engines inside the wing like the Valiant, Vulcan and Victor.

Here's an idea for you: there were various schemes afoot to launch things from a Vulcan bomber. One was a 'flight corridor research vehicle' that was essentially a British X-15, derived from a Blue Steel missile with a cockpit instead of a warhead. The other was the Avro X.24: a very doable looking small-sat launching multi-stage rocket that could fit semi-recessed in the Vulcan's bomb bay.

The cammo's an odd choice. Brown/green was the WWII bomber colour scheme, but soon after the war, the RAF transitioned to dark grey/dark green, either wraparound (top and bottom) or with a light grey underside. Look at a later Vulcan or Victor to get the idea.

how would the engines sustain the forces involved with high speed flight? how would the fuel get to the engines? its one thing to do a 3d model from a concept drawing, but there is no engineering involved in my opinion. that thing would loose its pods as soon as it's in the air.

Unfortunately, although Barnes Wallis had shown great genius earlier in his career, this was the prime example of him going beyond his limits and everybody knew it, even at the time. Wallis had his own design section at Vickers, separate from the mainstream drawing office, and although this was officially because he was working on 'advanced' projects, the speculation was that the real purpose was to keep him out of the way of the guys doing the practical work. he was right about the utility of swing wings, but in every other respect, the Swallow was not an impressive design. BW couldn't get UK government funding to have it wind-tunnel tested, so Vickers struck a deal with NASA to put it in their supersonic wind tunnel. The resultant report was highly critical, finding that the engines needed to be in the fuselage and that the aircraft needed both a tailplane and a fin in order to be safe. Typically Barnes Wallis rejected all of this out of hand, but nobody was going to fund it on the back of a report like that, so it died a death, and not before time. It wasn't a total waste of effort though: NASA's work did confirm the basic utility of the swing-wing concept, and the work they started on this was the genesis of the work that led to the F-111.

I would rather have engines mounted on the "shoulder" area of the delta wings so engine loads are exactly where they should be at, like jet fighters and some SSTs such as Concorde, so there's no undue mechanical stresses needed to be worried about. Boeing at least did it correctly with the 2707 SST while keeping the handy variable geometry wings to allow for efficient subsonic and supersonic flight.
