I remember our local mechanic fixing the windshield of a Volkswagen bug. He put a cord in the outer groove and by pulling it out the seal was flipping outside. It took him a minute! I think that's how I would try it myself but probably I also would give it to a Landrover mechanic. Volkswagen and Landrover are two different worlds

Got this job to do on an old Series 2 tropical roof. No idea whether the windows are the same size but I'm guessing the job is basically the same!

Absolutely dreading this job! And mine's a 110 hardtop so I can't get my hand behind the glass to stop it dropping through.

Hi Mike, Its good to see a professional struggle!!!!! I did the alpines on my series 3 station wagon last week. Looking at one of your previous vids I bought the Gunson tool. It is indispensible for the job.I put plenty of WD40 around the glass and the seal would not stay in.Struggled for ages then developped a different tecnique . Put the seal on the glass, put strips of gorilla tape to hold it in place near the ends and a couple in the middle. Put the glass with the seal into the apperture cutting off the tape as i got to it.The ends are bound to be a problem because the seal is straight and you want it to do a tight turn, It curls up and out I struggled for --------a long time . The retaining strip is inserted with the half round to the exterior. The apperture is far too big for the glass especially at the ends (both sides the same) on the second side no WD till I put the retaining strip in , went much better. The double safari roof gets in the way of the tool( live with it)The glass is 5 mm this must make life more difficult. I believe yours is only 4mm Worst of all one of the glasses was curled up at one end must have come like that from the factory, so I had to finnish off with mastic glue(Bostik 117)to seal the end I really look foreward to doing the seals on the other vehicle which awaits my attention in the yard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I put Alpine windows in my 90 build that didn't originally have them. Got a template/pattern from Masai 4x4 and set about cutting a hole in the roof. I was so scared of making the hole too big that I had to go back and shave off more metal about 5 times before they would fit. I feel your pain, Mike.

The rubber is 1/4 inch in the middle, 2 x 1/4 = 1/2 inch Space between glass and roof - 7/8 So there there was 3/8 more space than needed - which is why I had an issue Sorry to be in inched but the rubber size is imperial

I had to cut the holes to fit Alpine windows in my 90. Terrified me so much that I put the job off for about 3 months. Dunno if I just got lucky but, when I eventually got around to it, the entire job went really smoothly. As I've said before, I'm a bit of a chancer when it comes to glazing. I just use a flat-bladed screwdriver with the corners ground off and then whole thing smoothed off so there's no sharp edges on the blade. It's never a quick job but I get there in the end.

I think the apertures are hit and miss - as you saw the gap was huge but the glass dimensions are static No wonder the seals leak once they get old, if they only have 2/3mm to seal onto the roof

Might be worth mentioning but the older Alpine windows were 5mm thick and the newer ones are only 4mm. You have to make sure that you get the correct rubber otherwise you will struggle to get it around the bends. The 5mm rubbers are impossible to source here so I hope mine lasts (1992 Defender 110 - 5mm Glass)

@AlbertBraae Жыл бұрын
Do you know when they went from being 5mm to 4mm? Installing a new in my 1985 90. Can get a glass from a series 3, but maybe not a good idea if the glass is thicker and won't fit modern rubbers.

Iv just retro fitted these in my puma, Bought a template from masai 4x4 bit of paper 15 quid what a rip off. Anyhow long story short the hole was no where near big enough at 128mm wide ended up checking out your vids mike for the correct measurement. We went with that and fitted a treat and no leaks!! Well not yet anyhow....

Mike. Strike nine 'Muriel from Malawi' ! Any thoughts the alpine windows were off another Landy, since the gap was too wide and originals were likely broken ? Bet the other side is worse than this. V

My grandad would put a length of string...in the rubber (entirely around the length of rubber) then he would put glass in, pulling at the string to "bed in" the glass. (Did this for windscreens aldo....no WD40 but washing up liquid as a lube.......always lube up the rubber....
