The Gulf War has taken its' toll on transatlantic passenger numbers; Trans World Airlines agreed in late 1990 to sell its six routes between the United States and London to American Airlines for $445 million.
Pan Am agreed to sell its London routes to United Airlines for $400 million. These were new airlines to Heathrow in 1991, promising improved service, directly challenging the status-quo.
Against this backdrop, this film captures the events and initiatives being developed within British Airways during 1991 to remain competitive and to tackle the new competition.
These included the relaunch of Club Europe; new TV advertising, further cost cutting measures and staff surveys - all of which are featured briefly.
Spot the aircraft no longer flying - 757s, a taxi-ing 737-200 in front of the tailpipes of a BAC 1-11 at Terminal 1 and the arrival of the "new" 737-400 series aircraft; G DOCA - etc.

Back when BA was the real “Worlds Favorite Airline”. Best planes you could ask for, especially the 747. So much more British they were. Top notch cabin crew and reliability. So many smiling faces. Landor livery was beautiful too. It’s so heartbreaking to see costs and greed take over.

I loved the Landor as well. The have resurrected it on 1 of the B747 as part of 100 years and 2 other B747s have been painted in BOAC & Negus livery

I enjoyed the movies on 747 LHR=JFK=LHR when everyone watched the same movie like being at the cinema. That was 30 years ago. Last year i was on a ba one world 747 to MIA and the aircraft looked old, my hand luggage bin was stuck and my small tv screen on the emergency exit was lose. My flight was not as enjoyable as i remembered from 30 years ago

I agree with all you say, Jay, apart from your last sentence. What you see as "greed" is actually the life and blood of any business, big or small, it's called profit. Is the company making money and is that money enough to see it continue in business? In a supremely competitive industry such as this, merely raising fares is not enough. Go too far and before long you may have the very best airline in the world but people are going elsewhere because it cocts less to go somewhere. Part of making enough money to continue includes reducing your costs where possible. It's a sad fact of life that we all face even if we're not in business.

Very happy days. I was a purser with BA for 30 years. The guy stood at the door at the 3 min mark, David was the only other guy on my training course. He’s still flying but I left after 30 years as the pandemic started.

@psrpippy Well spotted re your training colleague. Wonder if many other employees from the days of “the world’s favourite airline” are still working / flying for them? 🤔

30 years later and they still hadn't fixed the steps problem. It's no fun arriving at 5am and having to wait 40 minutes for steps! It's not like a long haul flight arrives unexpectedly.

I was a BA purser in the eighties and nineties. We were oh so proud to work for the airline. Now, BA employees seem to be embarrassed by the poor performance, cost cutting and slashed salaries and conditions.

@Timothy Wilson. Yes I get that. I worked for BA too during that time and there was a real pride to work for “the worlds favourite airline”....

Lol 1990-1991 being a tough year for airlines. Imagine what they’d think of 2020

@Sam Lutfi true, i think it will be very interesting to watch how the airlines recover from 2020. The theme after 2001 was continued layers of security. The theme this time is obviously health. Been hearing rumours that for economy class cold and layers of packaged meal kits are being tested to reduce contamination.

Probably total disaster, maybe that’s why they got rid of their flagship signature Boeing 747. Very much premature.

The landor livery just looks so imposing to me. It's like I like it for it's boldness but it's also somewhat a bit intimidating.

@Pete S. Yes it was making a statement wasn’t it! I personally liked it - I guess because it was what I was used to when i worked for the airline during the Landor era. The uniforms looked smart at the time!

Low-cost and ultra low-cost carriers have dropped ticket prices, but passenger services have dropped for "full-service" airlines. Most plane travellers buy on ticket price. Legacy carriers cut meals, free luggage, etc. to reduce costs and compete with LCC and ULCCs.
