I’m a Bengals fan and I was watching this game with a group of about 50 Bills fans at a local Bills Backers bar (I think you’d call it a Supporter’s Pub in the UK) and I was the only Bengals fan there. The atmosphere of the group there was absolutely incredible and there was natural banter going around up until this point. For about 10 minutes we didn’t know for sure what was going on. Then we heard the announcer say they were doing CPR on Damar Hamlin. The whole bar went silent. None of us had any interest in continuing the game. All we wanted to hear was that he was going to be alright. Thankfully, it appears that he is making significant progress recovering.

The players surrounded him, some in prayer, so that no one could see the CPR being done and the D-fib being used. It really moved me, honestly. I'm wishing Damar a quick and full recovery. Millie is correct in saying it could have happened anywhere since we don't know, but Thank God it happened surrounded by friends, a medical team, and a waiting ambulance. It could also have been so much worse.

“Drs. Timothy Pritts and William Knight IV from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center provided updates about Hamlin's condition during an early-afternoon news conference. The second-year safety remains in critical condition in the trauma intensive care unit, they said, but the doctors said he has improved appreciably since arriving at the hospital Monday via ambulance from Paycor Stadium. "There's been substantial improvement in his condition over the past 24 hours," Pritts, the division chief of general surgery, told reporters. "We had significant concern about him after the injury and after the event that happened on the field, but he's making substantial progress. "As of this morning, he is beginning to awaken, and it appears that his neurological condition and function is intact." Earlier Thursday, the Bills cited the medical team as saying that Hamlin was making "steady progress." Pritts said Hamlin came out of sedation Wednesday night and used a pen and paper to ask a bedside nurse about the result of the Bengals-Bills game, which has been postponed indefinitely. "To paraphrase one of our partners," Pritts said, "when he asked, 'Did we win?' The answer is yes, Damar. You won. You've won the game of life." - MSN

As sad as it is you should react to the live ESPN coverage, it shows how truly unexpected and emotional it was. Buffalo has seen a lot of heart ache in the past year. This moment stunned us and the nation. We are rejoicing hearing the amazing news of his health improving. We needed this great news. What is truly amazing is the love and support of other teams and people in the US and throughout the world. He started a Go Fund Me for a charity and set the goal at 2500$. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of others it has surpassed 7 million since Monday. The NFL will figure out a solution but now our team will be playing for him and playing harder. If we are lucky enough to win the Super Bowl I hope Damar will be the 1st to raise the Lombardi.

A kid my cousin played lacrosse with in college died because of this. In lacrosse your pads do not completely cover your chest and he was hit with a ball in the chest at the exact moment his brain was sending the signal to his heart to beat (this is as best I understand it) so he collapsed and his heart did not understand it needed to beat. It was a completely freak accident.
@ruth2141
@ruth2141 Жыл бұрын
This type of injury actually happens much more often in sports like baseball (and probably cricket) where you have a small object travelling at a high speed that hits the chest. A blow to just the right place causes an electrical abnormality that stops the normal heart function. Football has other dangers like brain damage from too many blows to the head, but this was really a freak event.
@hectorsmommy1717
@hectorsmommy1717 Жыл бұрын
It is super rare in American football because 1) The padding covers the upper chest (although things like elbows can get underneath it) and 2) Most hits in football are large objects hitting a larger area so the force is spread out, not concentrated. Football injuries tend to be to the extremities like torn ligaments, pulled muscles, etc. or head injuries like concussions. This really was a freak accident. Neither Hamlin nor Higgins did anything out of the ordinary.

Condition is called Arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat can produce Cardiac Arrest. I had similar condition to Damar's. My condition is called Atrial Fibrillation or A-fib twice in 2019. Last time weakened my heart. I am taking medication for it. I know that Cardiologist done an Echo or Echocardiogram on his heart to check function of his heart pumping. I have to get these done when my doctor requested for Echo. Those doctors at UC Health in Cincinnati did an excellent care of Damar. But it is up to his heart now if he is able to play football. First off, hats off to the Bill's training staff and first responders who were able to revive him on the field and save this man's life. In my completely uneducated opinion it looks most likely like Commotio Cordis. Typically more prevalent in hard ball sports like baseball and hockey it's basically if you're struck in the chest hard enough in exactly the right spot at exactly the right moment in your heartbeat it can throw off your normal heart rhythm and even cause it to stop. It's even more prevalent in people who have undiagnosed heart arrhythmia's like the gentleman in the video stated. Luckily the reports today is that he has awaken after 72 hours and is moving his extremities and communicating via writing (still has a tube down his throat) and seems fully "neurologically intact" which is pretty incredible since he was basically dead on the field for I think around 9 minutes. His first question was "Who won the game?", an absolute warrior.

The NFL has never called a game off. They’ve delayed games but once a game has started they’ve never not let it eventually play out the same day. So you say you weren’t surprised they’ve suspended it but this was a first. It was so shocking that I only tuned in and found out what happened because I wanted to know what made the NFL actually cancelled a game that has been started. The NFL had actually had a player have a heart attack and die on the field before and they finished the game. I was actually at a college game and a defensive player made a tackle and was taken to the hospital in which he died that game was continued and finished

commotio cordis or heartbeat upswing is the most likely answer here. Basically he got hit the exact second his heartbeat was resetting for the next one. It’s a electrical signal that makes your heartbeat reset each time but if you get hit then your heart will instantly stop and you’ll have to be resuscitated with the auto defibrillator or with the paramedics. It’s not something you can just come back from either as recovery is a full year maybe more but his career is over as the fear will be there no matter what and also if he gets hit again it will happen again and even worse. You sometimes see it in martial arts or various sports that you might get hit from. The update from the doctors say that he’s mostly awake but confused but still critical as he’s still in the cardiac ward. It’s an improvement but still something is better than nothing.

In a sense, it was a blessing that it happened when and where it did. Between the two teams, there are multiple doctors, trauma specialist, and EMTs. If this had happened at home, on the way to the game, or even in the locker room, this might have had a different ending. To say I'm overjoyed about how he's recovering, is the understatement of the decade. Love going out to him and his family.

I was watching the game live and it was heart wrenching! I'm a die hard Chiefs fan but I became a Bills' fan Monday night. He's improving daily which is fantastic news. Their is speculation that he suffered cardiac arrest due to a condition known as Commotio Cordis. Commotio cordis occurs when you experience a trauma to your chest that can cause additional waves of electricity to pass through the heart muscle. The extra waves throw off your normal heart rhythm-which can be deadly. But because the teams have a team of doctor's on the field they were able to get his heart started in a timely fashion. It saved his life.

The tackle hit his chest and caused an erratic heartbeat and cardiac arrest. So scary by but happens at times. He was given CPR and his heart was defibrillated bringing back his heartbeat. There isn't much the NFL could do to further prevent Commotio Cordis. The odds are one-in-a-million, and I don't know of this happening before in the NFL's 50+ year history. In this case, it looks like when Hamlin raised his arms to tackle the receiver it likely caused the chest protection attached to his shoulder pads to raise up. The receivers helmet hits Hamlin's chest, and it is possible that it also hit his chest again when they went to the ground. That part happens all the time, even in other sports. The reason this is so rare (and tragic) this time, however, is because it has to be a certain amount of force, in a rather specific location, and at a VERY specific time related to the heart rhythm. One doctor that spoke on this on Tuesday said there are usually less than 30 cases of this worldwide, and usually happens more in youth baseball than in contact sports.

Nobody wants to see players injured. But backing up and looking at the bigger picture: The players receive far more pay than a soldier or a cop who could be shot and killed on the job. Many workers are seriously injured on the job. If the players make it to the NFL, they are all aware that this is a rough game, and that they could be injured. They accept that risk when they suit up to play.

The odds of it happening are like the odds of being struck by lightning. It happened to a Hockey player in 1998 when he took a puck to the chest from a slap shot. He made a full recovery and played for 10 more years. The good news with Hamlin is they are saying he's neurologically intact, he hasn't suffered any brain damage from the period of time he wasn't getting blood to the brain. He was conscious today and even briefly had a video call with his team. Still not out of the woods yet but the signs are good he's gonna pull through

This typically happens (still rarely) in kids in Little League baseball, who get struck in the chest by a pitch and it stops their heart. He was very lucky to have so many qualified medical people and equipment nearby so they could save him.

It happened to my brother. He was 37. Didn't smoke or drink . Heart muscle was fine .. arteries weren't clogged. I was with him . He didn't have the regular(but not always present I know) arm pain. Shortness of breath and he felt panicked. They gave him some oxygen he felt better then that was that. Idk if this is what happened or not to this athlete but in my brother they suspected a gene type called a "terminator gene" .. like some plants have to end at a certain time of year.

@@robertcampomizzi7988 This wasn’t a heart attack in the traditional sense, or an arrhythmia that can come on suddenly. I’m sure CPR could not have saved him, he would have required a defibrillator to get his heart started again. It might have something to do with impact to a specific nerve, causing it to stop sending the electrical signal. There would have been no warning at all, just the impact to the heart and it stopped, then essentially he died and had to be brought back.

@@robertcampomizzi7988 His heart didn't explode. He was hit a precisely the right moment between beats and his heart just stopped beating. A 12yo playing baseball in my son's league got hit in the chest with the ball and he died right there. A dude married to my husband's cousin (37yo) was installing wood flooring and a plank popped up from the table saw and hit him in the chest. He took a few steps backward and died. Sadly, it happens.

This was absolutely scary to watch live. We've seen players who were concussed faint/stagger around before. That alone is scary, but it's never "are they going to survive?" scary. This was different and felt much more 'real'. This is a young man who didn't even get hit all that hard, but it shows just how fragile we really are. I've seen stuff before about kids playing baseball and being killed when the ball hits them in the chest or neck. I've known people, including a cross-country runner, who died while running. Luckily it seems like Damar is making a very big recovery in such a short amount of time -- especially when you consider they lost his pulse 2 times. He legally died twice, but the medical staffs were able to bring him back both times.

Damar Hamlin had started a foundation, Chasing M’s Foundation Community Toy Drive, to help the kids from his hometown. There is a Gofundme page that was set up 2 years ago that had a goal of $2,500. Since his incident Monday night, people have found his Gofundme page and shared that on social media and they have now raised 7.5 million dollars.

I remember watching the Detroit Lions football game when Chuck Hughes died during the game. He was the only NFL player to die on the field during a game. On Oct. 24, 1971, the 28-year-old Lions wide receiver suffered a heart attack and died during a matchup against the Chicago Bears. Very scary for this pre-teen at that time. Prayers to Bill Hamlin and his family and fans.

That was the first thing that came to mind, when I saw this happen. With the espn crew all saying - this is unprecedented, this has never, ever happened before, immediately I thought of Chuck Hughes, on the ground, and Dick Butkus frantically trying to get some help.I remember it clearly. Terrible things. I'm glad this one had a more positive outcome.

Getting hit in the chest at the exact millisecond during the electric pulse travels thru can stop your heart. I know baseball players have died from being hit in the chest with a ball. It looks like the other players helmet hit his chest pretty hard during the tackle. Hopefully there are AED machines available at games to administrator and electric shock to get a heart rhythm back and kept close to the field so that heart tissue doesn't die before the shock is administered. I feel like every home and car should have an AED

I was watching the game when it happened, I was in tears. Seeing the other player’s reaction was heartbreaking. CPR is no joke and seeing it like that is so traumatizing, especially a teammate. There’s something special about sports culture and the bond between teammates is inspiring. Many of these players may have played with each other in college or professional football so it becomes less about individual teams and more about football as a whole and how each player is there for each other beyond the team name. Don’t get me wrong, I’m from Boston and the Bills are our rivals all day, but I completely respect all the love everyone has shown towards Hamlin, here’s hoping to a speedy recovery ❤️

To see the best of our country you should have seen the view outside of the hospital. Bills fans and Bengals fans standing together saying prayers in unity. I still believe that's is the core of what makes our country great. Not any politician, customs, foods, or scenery...it's the same spirit that we felt after a lot of tragedies...when we put all the BS aside and stand together UNITED! May sound stupid or naive, but I do believe that. Just sad it takes something bad to bring us together anymore.

Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin's heart was most likely healthy before collapse. The right hit at the wrong time may have triggered a rare phenomenon known as commotio cordis, heart experts suggest. Commotio cordis is a condition in which an abnormal heart rhythm (ventricular fibrillation) and cardiac arrest happen immediately upon an object (usually something small and hard like a baseball or hockey puck) striking the chest directly over the heart at a very critical time during a heartbeat.

The medical consensus is that it was commotio cordis, which is a disruption of the heart rhythm caused by a blow to the chest. Luckily, a heart defibrillator (AED), which is required in stadiums & available in other public places, was used to shock his heart back into proper rhythm.

Not really the same thing. He fell on his neck and injured his spinal cord, which damaged his esophagus making him unable to breathe. In 1971 Chuck Hughes didn't die from a blow. He was running as a decoy in a play, but he wasn't hit. He collapsed when running back to the huddle. He had a heart attack because of an undiagnosed heart condition when a blood clot closed an artery. But in the sense of seeing these things happen I guess you could say it was the same. Player down, no one knows whats going on but can tell its a serious situation, player taken away in an ambulance. Definitely a similar experience for a fan at or watching any of those games.

It was the tackle. The helmet hit his chest at just a right time of a heart beat and it canceled the beat. Like an electric shock. Something like this is so rare. There is a cartologist that stated that something like this will never happen to him again in his life. That's how rare this event was.

There is a procedure that can be used as a paramedic if you witness a heart attack. You slam your fist in to their sternum. It sometimes will restart the heart…a helmet into the chest at those speeds would do something similar.

I was still awake when this happened & saw the notifications of the news blowing up my phone. My first thought was "I think his heart stopped." And "As a counselor, I know that Tee Higgins (the Bengals who got tackled) is going to be dealing with a lot mentally & emotionally & thinking he could've done something different. I pray he doesn't live with those thoughts weighing on him because if it hadn't happened now, Hamlin's heart may have stopped during any other tackle at that impact point." And 3rd, "Inky Johnson".

It’s my understanding that when he made the tackle, he collided with the other guys helmet and then landed on that same helmet. One doctor said that it was a very rare type of injury, that the hit took place at a specific point in his heart rhythm which causes the stoppage of his heart. He received cpr both on the field and again either in the ambulance or at the hospital. They did come out and postponed the rest of the game that evening and then cancelled it all together.
