I did some research into this a while ago. It's because the slur was originally a term used on shipping vessels for frayed rope at one end, it was synonymous with useless. So it transitioned to smoking cigarettes because a cigarettes you burn one end, thereby making it useless - also the tobacco poking out the end looks like a frayed rope. This then transitioned to the modern slur. Why someone might be referred to as the slur from a higher education school where you're essentially a bus boy; Likely comes from the fact that you're inexperienced, dont know anything and are by default useless, ie only useful for manual labour.

It really is a shame, though I will say it's not exclusive to american english. I saw a video of a woman from somewhere in england that had a really thick accent and one of maybe a slightly older generation, and she had to make a video explaining that she wasnt faking it or trying to mock the accent as she was getting harassed online from people claiming to be from the area and were upset by it. But back to the american vs british difference, look up the history of the book "and then there were none". Really interesting how the title was changed to reflect a complete change in what people find offensive in britain because of america. In the states it was originally released with that title back in the 30s or so, but it was a british book, and the uk title was "Ten Little (N word, hard R)" because even though it was offensive in america, it was mundane in britain, and it stayed as that title until the 70s (80s?) Only to be changed to "Ten Little Indians" and then to the current title. This seems to coincide with the cultural mixing of britain and america throughout the century, and I imagine the growing up of a generation around such cultural mixing. Meanwhile, the short word for Pakistani has made no impact on american english because the UK is too small to make a dent in it it seems. They have bo issue saying *that*.

No it isn't lol. English is a language, but British English is a dialect. How else do you want to differentiate between Australian English, American English, Canadian English, Irish English, etc.?

@@heythisanimalcantalk it’s common place to differentiate the later adaptations of languages, French was adopted in Canada and is referred to in a multitude of ways for example French Canadian or Quebec French, you don’t then turn around and call it France French, I guess if you’re desperate you could call it French of France but realistically no human has ever or will ever call it that because it’s futile😂. Similarly with countries that adopted Spanish, it can be referred to as Mexican Spanish as the adapted language and it would be odd to refer to Spanish spoken in Spain as Spain Spanish or Spanish Spanish or even European Spanish because that’s where the language as we know it originates, again like with ‘British English’ you could call it Castilian Spanish, but no one does, because it’s pointless. Same goes for English, it was adopted and adapted by different parts of the world and you use those places to differentiate from the original birthplace of the language as we know it. To clarify I’m not saying the likes of English, Spanish and French haven’t changed since spreading to other countries, every areas dialect evolves but that has little impact on the facts prior. I’m not saying you can’t say it, theres technically little wrong with it so do whatever makes you happy and secure about your own language I guess, I’m just saying it’s weird and a little futile. English people speak English, British English is English…. Americans speak English from america, American English, that doesn’t discredit your dialect, it just indicates where it was taken from. I personally found the phrasing funny so I pointed out that I found it bizarre. “I’m going to Madrid on holiday so I’m going to have to learn Spain Spanish.” Just a funny observation, wasn’t really looking to start a debate.

We do in fact say Castillian or European Spanish to differentiate it from say Spanish as used in Cuba, and Lusitanian or European Portuguese as opposed to Brazilian Portuguese.

Except we DO often distinguish dialects by country, cities and whatever else. Spain Spanish is different from Mexican Spanish, which is different from Puerto Rico which is different from Venezuela. French spoken in France is much more easily understood by my mother (Whose French is admittedly not the best) in comparison to the French spoken in Quebec. English isn't special, our language is spoke across so many places that it has developed such incredible variations as to be nearly incomprehensible to some other speakers. AAVE, Australian, Queen's English and Scot's English are 4 very different ways to speak English and if you had no experience with the other, you'd think it wasn't English at all.

That doesn't go on anymore.

Newspeak implies there is a loss in communication, when this is just a case of language dialects coming into conflict with each other. It happens with Spanish all the time where normal words change their meaning and become offensive elsewhere. Like one word for "get" is to screw someone (And not in the betrayal way) and it's not an intentional miscommunication, words just change in weird ways. Honestly, just play a game in Spain's Spanish and look at it through a Latin American dictionary, it's swears galore! You're seeing the same phenomena in English.

To be fair, as a Brit no one uses it in that context. 99% of Brits will think you're using a slur if you saying 'it's F*gging time' or assume you're a gay person being ironic. The most likely context to hear it and have no one be offended would be if you're asking for a smoke from someone although that has it's own funny implications in the US 'Can I bum a f*g' has a very different meaning across the pond. The reason this isn't common is; Most people from the UK arent going to the top schools, most people go to school locally regardless of how good/bad that school may be. Most people have never heard of this context in media. AFAIK this tradition isnt still practiced or if the terms have changed. So whilst it might be historically accurate, it's just not culturally relevant to the majority of people that lived here, never was popular and it's even less likely now.
