So, best way to get a cat to like you... Don't initiate petting, wait until they want to be pet. Treats, hanging out in their general vicinity, and being a chill/comforting presence, gets you cat cred. Just be a pleasant person that exists, make positive associations, and the cat will come to you eventually.

An incredible amount of people in the comments here are under the misconception that tail wagging means the cat is angry, which is absolutely not true. I've worked with cats a bunch earlier in life. The tail movement (wagging is not a good descriptor), it when their excitedness tends to rise. That could be because they are angry sure, or it could be because they think food is incoming, or someone they are comfortable with looks like they are about to interact with them, or if they are nervous or anxious about some environmental change. I would say anger is very low percentage of the times in which a cat's tail reacts. If anything their tail goes stiff when mad, because it correlates to a fight about to happen or hunting where evolutionarily tails wagging about would give away their position.

Lil tips for gaining a cats trust- tho it’s important to know every cat is different and it might take a lot of time but it’s so worth it - don’t move towards a cat- u can call out to them with ur typical “pspsps” or clicking sounds and that usually gets there attention- but if they want to- they will move towards u themselves- u moving towards them may spook them off - don’t stare at a cat- don’t make direct eye contact for too long and instead blink slowly (if the cat slow blinks back that is a great sign) - be very aware of a cats body language- look it up if u need to- but the biggest things you should pay attention to is a cats tail, ears and eyes with first meetings- tail straight up with only the tip of the tail flicking is a very welcoming sign- a tail down and flicking wildly could either be an irritated cat or a playful one- it all depends on context- with ears as well- if a cats ears face forward- great sign- if a cats face backwards- usually a bad sign - be aware of if a cat wants to be pet and where they want to be pet- if u hold out ur hand in offering for them to sniff- great- but when meeting a cat always wait until the cat moves and rubs themselves against ur hand before petting them- that’s them asking to be pet- and usually what they rub with is where they’d like u to pet! the cat will also move and try guide u to where they like to be scratched (note- usually keep away from touching an unknown cats belly, tail and feet) - be patient! it’s important to be patient with any animal you’re trying to gain trust with- you are new and unfamiliar and that can be terrifying- so keep that in mind

Connor should watch some Jackson Galaxy videos about how to actually work with and befriend cats, they aren't dogs and don't respond to treats in the same way. He'd have an easier time ignoring the cats and being quiet than pestering them

The way you get a cat to like you is to chill with it. To not approach it. To briefly let it smell you and then back off. You CANNOT go into befriending a cat with the mindset of befriending a dog. It doesn’t work like that. Also, a cat that loves you may not really seem like it does. If they sleep in a corner of a room you’re in, they love you. Cats don’t sleep in places they don’t feel safe. If they sit with their back to you, they love you. Turning their back on you is a sign of deep trust that you won’t sneak up and attack them. Affection from a cat may not look outwardly like affection a lot of the time, but it is.

Cat behavior is in a lot of ways the opposite of dogs so I can understand how he was confused and frustrated. If Connor wants to understand Cat behavior better then watching KZfaq videos of the TV show "My cat from hell" hosted by Jackson Galaxy the cat behavior specialist will give him a quick crash course on interacting with any cat. If he doesn't want to watch the show to learn then all we can do is give advice and hope he listens. Cats "wag" or "flick" their tails when annoyed or on guard. ( different tail positions or movements tell you how the cat is feeling, much like dogs, but it is often opposite and way more complex due to cat tail vertebrae Mobility ) Cats need small amounts of treats first, then pets or tricks, followed by more treats. (Unless the cat has been trained a different way this is the normal order of operations unlike with dogs which is action first then treats) Too much petting and too loud of a voice will chase a kitty away unfortunately 😔. "Chase" is fun for dogs but chasing a cat will have them avoiding someone like the plague 😅. ❤ We as humans don't give/force love to/on our cats they give love to us by their rules in their own way. ❤ With dogs it's the opposite most often that they crave our love and will seek it out even to their detriment in bad cases. 😢 If treats are not working then try play time with their favorite toys then offer treats. This positive attention will show them that you are a provider of their basic needs which will translate to them feeling safe around you instead of being on guard. Cats view themselves more as "prey" for larger animals while "predators" to very small animals. Dogs view themselves as top predators and prey to none in the natural world even if they are a small Chihuahua. I hope this helps good luck Connor for next time.

Training and being loved by a cat is a gradual thing. ive had oodles of cats and even had one that did tricks like shake paw, or hug. You gotta be forceful but in short bursts. Like if the cat dont wanna be held but you wanna hold the cat. Pick it up shortly and hold even if you are sitting. If you want a cat in ur lap grab the cat and put them in ur lap, many of my cats liked being on my shoulders as well. One of my friends would stick his cat to his shirt using their claws, the cat loved being attached to him after that

Oh my god, the amount you messed up already within the first 10 minutes only. Do not just go ahead and pet a cat that doesn't know you! You have to let them smell your fingers first, hold them in front of the cat and then they'll smell them. And after that either they'll look suspicious and apprehensive, if that the case do not pet them if you don't wanna risk getting scratched. Or they'll look relaxed, then you can try petting them but do not EVER touch their body right away. You have start with the head, always and if they like it you can try the back but don't go anywheere near their stomach. That's where they're most vulnerable so they'll get defensive. Sometimes they'll even initiate the petting by rubbing their head on your fingers if you hold them in front of their face. And a tail wagging is a sign of annoyance, and almost like a warning. If they're wagging their tail you better stop petting them cause otherwise they might attack. Cats aren't difficult, but you have to earn their trust first. you wouldn't want some stranger coming up to you and touching you all of a sudden while you're just chilling either. Pay close attention to their body language and you'll be fine.
