For all the English learners watching this: be aware that the presenter is giving an excellent and wonderful explanation of how and when this sound is pronounced in *certain accents in England* . It sounds lovely, but it's not the *only* correct pronunciation, and many English speakers *do* make a difference between the verb 'to draw' and the noun 'a drawer'!

Hello Anna, I am an Italian living in Manchester :). It's 8 years now and I still have an Italian pronunciation :(. I have found out these days that I struggle with words like soothed, breathed, loathed. I am not sure you have covered this one, for sure you did cover the same sound followed by S. Thanks

~~~~ In Awe for Anna ~~~~ I strived to utter 'Bernard shaw' But Aww my gosh that's the last straw! Pshaw, they should be against the law All these words with that tricky /ɔː/ There's times I'd like to seize a saw And saw all boughs where there's a crow Or maybe that is a jackdaw... I mean that kind of bird that caws For I hear them mock and guffaw In a sarcastic tone like Waugh As I'm trying like a macaw, Spitting words and twisting my jaw, To pronounce them without a flaw To not say them like 'show' or 'glow' Whilst I am eating... my coslaw! Ah yes I wish I just could gnaw Like a rat gnaws Swiss cheese or slaws And if only I was inlaw Those aw-ending words to withdraw Or at least phonetics redraw... I guess I must struggle and thaw, Persevere and learn to hee-haw; Be a tiger retracting claws. Anna, you are belle as a dawn I sometimes wish you were my squaw Or maybe just my sis' in law A Queen to whose the feet I craw Like for Wilde for you I'm in awe May I in your back hit a paw For helping me yaw traps and flaws. F. 10/07/23. Merci Anna! Hope you like it Bisous, Love 😘🌹❤
Hey Anna, this is what I found on the Cambridge Dictionary website 'draw' pronounced as /drɔː/ and 'drawer' as /drɔːr/ which is how I've pronounced it my whole life. What system of pronunciation are you using? Please explain the difference. Thank you!
@EnglishLikeANative
@EnglishLikeANative 8 ай бұрын
The final /r/ written in the Cambridge Dictionary is a superscript r meaning that it’s a linking r - only pronounced if the following word begins with a vowel sound. In the case of DRAW an intrusive r would likely be pronounced if the following word begins with a vowel sound, but not all dictionaries write out possible intrusive sounds. As stand alone words they are both pronounced without an r at the end, and both could have an r to link to the next word (if it starts with a vowel sound). Essentially, they are both pronounced in exactly the same way in British RP.
@@EnglishLikeANative That makes sense, it was depicted as a superscript (I couldn't show it here), but I was a bit confused because the sound clip seemed to pronounce it. Thank you for explaining so elaborately. Some of these unwritten rules don't show themselves unless you're in a conversation with a native speaker. Really appreciate it! =)
