I saw Glen play with Steve Wariner at a fund raiser Steve held every year in his hometown. The venue was outside and I was waiting at Glen's tour bus after the show, with an album for him to hopefully sign, not knowing he was already on the tour bus. I finally walked away and as I was walking I heard someone yell at me. I turned around it was Glen having just walked off the bus. He said, "were you waiting for me"? I went back and he signed my album and even talked guitars for a few minutes. It is a great memory for me.

I was at a Guns N Roses concert right after Glen passed away. Axel said he was doing a tribute song for someone who influenced his musical career. Next thing you know both he and all the die hard rockers filling the stadium, are singing Wichita Lineman. Really moving.

Glen Campbell played my Uncle's 50th birthday party. I got to hang out with Glen. on the Island of Kauai in 2008. I picked him up hitchhiking. I didn't recognize him. He didn't know who I was. We were just two friends riding around the Island. So we drove to "pine trees" in Hanalei Bay. Shook hands and said goodbye. When I sat down at the picnic table with my friend Jeff asked me "how long have you been friends with Glen Campbell." I said "I just picked him up hitchhiking." Glen would walk Hanalei Beach. He would stop and hang out, and everybody would pass the guitar around in a circle. He was comfortable just being a person among other people. He loved the beach, he loved to listen to other people play, and hear what they had to say. There was no edge to him. Easy to be with.

Yours is a great recollection story. I met him twice myself, about 10 years apart. Neither time having anything at all to do with music. Just the two of us happening upon each other and talking one-on-one during each occasion to pass time. And you are right. He was a gentleman's gentleman in terms of casual interaction and enjoyment of being in the company of others with friendly conversation.

Cool story. I had a similar, much shorter story of an encounter with a humble Danny Gatton three weeks before he passed. I had met him four times in 1979 when he repaired two guitars for me at his shop in Oxon Hill, MD, but I had been out of State a while and had not seen him when I came back since 1979. I honestly didn't recognize him that day in 1994 although we talked a bit about my guitar and other things at a music gear swap meet down in Waldorf, MD. Only after his passing did a good friend, who had been with us in the latter part of the conversation, make me realize it was Danny.

Session playing is what got Campbell in the door and introduced his great talents to the fame makers. His superlative god-gifted vocals are what carried him on to fame and fortune, producing no less than SIXTY-THREE “Glen Campbell” albums which were released thru his legendary career! On another note regarding another genuine TALENT- NOBODY analyzes the talents of musical artists as THOROUGHLY, as INTELLIGENTLY, as KNOWLEDGEABLY as Fil! Fil’s not only a proficient musician himself but an EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATOR regarding the subject of musicianship which he knows and teaches so well!

In 1967 I lived in Los Angeles . I got every break imaginable. I was also only twenty years old. I was at CBS on Fairfax where they shot the Smothers Brothers Show one day with a musical Director doing a lead sheet. There were all these small 10 by 10 feet practice rooms. I saw a door open, and it was Glen alone in one of the rooms with an Ovation ( not the model he’s using here ) guitar. I walked in the room, and he just said “hi, how are you doing ? “ I said fine I was just there with a musical director writing out a chart for me. I asked if I could just sit in the other chair ,and listen to what your doing ,and why you’re doing it. It said it was something for the show. In any event he was as humble, and kind as a person can get . He had a sheet he was looking at, I assumed he was reading a chart. It was just a chord chart. I had no idea he didn’t read, but he knew instinctive what to do . That was so long ago. It only lasted maybe five minutes, but it was a five minutes I’ll never forget. Great interpreter of songs. Jimmy Webb wrote for Glen. That is a match made in heaven. A great singer,a great player, and great writer . That was LA in the mid sixties.

I was born in Galveston, Texas. My mom had to stop her trip from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to San Antonio, Texas, so I can't really say I'm "from" Galveston. Glen Campbell sang a song called, "Galveston" and it's an antiwar song. It was very brave of him to say something in that genre at that time. I never found the lyrics until KZfaq. I had no idea he could play like this.

The Wrecking Crew documentary got me to Glen Campbell, that got me to Wichita Lineman, that got me to more Glen Campbell, that brought me here. So much fun and very interesting video. Well done. You kept my attention! haha

The most impeccable musician ever. He knew no bounds and was adept at any genre and was equally accomplished in other instruments and his vocals were an instrument all their own. He will always remain "Gentle on My Mind" and he has left a void that won't be filled in our lifetime.

Such an amazing technique and expression from a self-taught player. Glen never disappoints. It blows my mind that he was a session player and he could not read music. Naural God-given talent coupled with LOTS of practice. Thanks, Fil. Great analysis, as usual.

This is at least your third reaction video to Glen, Fil, and am so happy that you recognize his truly all-time talent. He was SO much more than a good-looking pop and country singer. He had it all.

His improvising skills were off the chart. I grew up watching him in high school. Had just began to play guitar. His influence is still with me to this day. Not to mention his session playing, and for someone who didn’t really read music, he was amazing. Glad you analyzed this one Phil, just great.

wow ! thanks Fil , haven't seen this one before . this one really shows Glen as more of a jazz player without getting out of the "comfort zone" of the majority of the general public listening audience but keeping it wild and interesting enough not to fall into that elevator music palatability that some jazz falls into . this really shows Glens connection with real everyday people bringing complicated musical ideas to folks that otherwise wouldn't understand and appreciate some of the intricacies of top jazz greats

To think Glen did everything he did - without being able to read music! From his early days with the Wrecking Crew, all the way through his successful solo career - such an incredibly amazing talent! His live performance of “Gentle on my Mind“ features an incredibly beautiful guitar solo in place of the third verse. RIP Glen Campbell

I was so lucky to have been able to see him on his farewell tour. I grew up watching him on tv & was thrilled that he was appearing at the Count Basie Theatre, walking distance from my home in NJ. He needed a teleprompter for the words, but he absolutely KILLED on the guitar! Always with his wonderful sense of humor in tact. I was still devastated by his death, but I saw that interview with Alice Cooper. It made me a little less sad, knowing that he was finally at peace. Cheers!

Geez, listening to you, Fil, I feel that me and others never really appreciated the immense talent that Glen had. I remember he was all the rage during his 1970s TV show, but then when that ended, for some reason we all saw him as not cool anymore. And although I loved his TV show, because I am not very good on the guitar, all I saw was a guy whose voice I loved who strummed the guitar.
