Jeff Beck is a living legend. His unique finger picking style gives him the opportunity to do things that a pick player can not do. If you like this style of playing check out Matteo Mancuso. Matteo is young man from Palermo, Sicily . He is taking the guitar to another level. Even Al DiMeola has taken notice of this up and coming sensational guitarist.

I knew Jeff Beck back in the days when he played with the 'Nightshift' over on Eel Pie Island. His solos back then, left the crowd jaw droppingly stunned. At that time Rod Stewart was the Interval singer for Long John Baldry , when he went off for his half time beer.

Jeff Beck has been my favourite MUSICIAN since I first heard him back in the '60's. The first time I heard Jeff's Boogie, I was hooked. He always struck me as a guitarist who wanted to sing so bad that he learned how to get his guitar to do what his vocal cords couldn't. He's a lot more than a acid-jazz-rock-gear head fusion, though; his rock-billy thing, which can be seen to great effect on his Les Paul tribute Rock Party video is very, very good.

For those who are new to Jeff's music, listen to his "Blow by blow" album. This has been in rotation at my house since its release in 1975. It's that fantastic and never ages. After that you're ready for his "Wired" album. By this time you should be hooked.... BTW, a little nostalgia. My first gf, on our first date invited me to join her at a Fleetwood Mac concert in Minneapolis on June 26th, 1976 (I kept the stub as a souvenir). Not a Fleetwood Mac fan but when I saw that JB was opening the show....YES! Let's go. That was a date to remember.

Rest well and in peace, Jeff ... I love what Steve Vai said yesterday - and Steve ain't no slouch on the guitar. "In the pantheons of guitar players, Jeff Beck was the chosen one." He was certainly the best I've ever seen. While Hendrix was the better guitarist in '67 until his death (and who knows what he'd have gone on to do), IMO over time Jeff surpassed even Jimi as a guitarist. Thank you for all the great music through the years, Jeff. Rest well and in peace.

Folks, this is from 1999. The Ronnie Scott's gig mentioned several times in the comments is from 2007, and his band at that point was absolutely mind-blowing. I've also seen vids from the Loud Hailer (2016 release) tour -- at which time he was *_seventy-two_* (born 1944) -- and he was still running on all 16 cylinders ... or maybe 24 -- he's got more horsepower now than all of his contemporaries _put together_ . I've also seen vids from 2017 & 2018, and he's _still_ touring -- in England now, but if he plays in the US I'm going to haul my creaky 70-year-old carcass to see him (I didn't do the deal with the Devil that's let him continue being the best rock/blues guitarist on earth while the rest of us geezers are having trouble just opening jars).

Beck is a master at Dynamics. What blew me away when I heard "Live at Ronnie Scott's" was he made his guitar sound like a blues harp when he played with Eric Clapton. If you closed your eyes, it would be difficult to tell the the difference. But just like you said, nobody sounds quite like him. Probably one of the best blues and fusion players I can think of. Now for a suggestions. How about Robben Ford live 2007

I had read somewhere that Beck picked up the crab style of fingerpicking later on, after his time with the Yardbirds as a way of expanding his note palette (is there another phrase?) picking out parts of chords instead of just the one. It's evident on the scene from BlowUp that he's still using a pick. I don't remember when exactly he changed. Knopfler uses a similar technique and he gives Chet Atkins a lot of credit for adopting that style. Beck is still relevant in these days, where so many of his contemporaries have faded.

Jeff Beck has the most control over the Fender Stratocaster of any guitarists that's ever played one! Aside from his left hand phrases, his right hand is overwhelming stunning. There's only one Jeff Beck and he's better every year... Phil, I'd like you to review "The Real Me" as performed by the John Entwistle Band. The bass tone varied with JEB because the Ox had full control of how the band sounded. It was John's band and he was finally out front in the mix. My cousin gave me Truth and Hendrix Are You Experienced when I was 12 and I was like THIS guy is the guitarist and who got me started. 40 years later and I still can't play most of the stuff on there like he did lol, Saw the original Jeff Beck group in 69 at a very rare performance (because Beck hated touring) and Swear to God they couldn't get through 1 song without Jeff and Rod goin at each other. There was some water on a tarp above them from a previous rain and Stewart kept poking at it with his mike stand to get it to pour down on Beck to electrocute him. It broke my heart they couldn't manage to get thru Blues Deluxe so i could hear that amazing solo live like on Truth but Jeff made up for it later by playing the Beverly Hillbillies theme (both parts) without any accompaniment totally unrehearsed!!!

Fil......i enjoy hearing your take on the various artists you portray in your webcast. Most of the others, while a couple are entertaing, are for the most part a joke. You do a great job of touching on all the various aspects of an artists performance and abilities. I saw Jeff Beck at the Ice Palace in Tampa, with Damon Fowler, sometime around 1999-2000. Had 2nd row seats and he was directly in front of me. He put on an awesome show.... orgasm for the ears. Just a top notch musician....dedicated to his instrument. Have seen them all and he is one of my favorites. I won't bother you with any more of my suggestions....as you are a guitarist, and in your quest to gain knowledge you will come across plenty to share. I was very happy to see you covered Frank Marino....he is truly phenomenal. Do try and feature his Montreal version of Voodoo Chile.....your viewers will love it. Vai's slapping of the whammy is definitely similar to Beck. However, for some reason the timing of Beck's lines sound better. Overall, it's hard to beat Vai, but the way Beck uses vibrato is VERY hard to copy. Trust me, I have been trying to emulate different aspects of Beck's style for 35 years.

Ha, I know that "Trust me" addition is a great way to identify me as an American, lmao. I have just always loved Beck's use of vibrato. No, he is definitely not the most skilled player out there, but he stays in the pocket, so to speak; this is why I love Keith Richards, too.

John Green Beck has performed sufficiently in live shows since the 70s independently and Along other English guitarist and has given us quite a bit of guitar work and music to judge unfortunately I've never found Keith pull off even a half decent solo, whether live or on any song by the stones. His rhythm is average and minimal from all that I've heard. You might want to suggest a concert of an album that really brings out his work because putting him on the same row as beck or any other English guitarist doesn't sound alright, but of course, I'm willing to change my mind.
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 6 жыл бұрын
No, Keith is definitely not a great lead player, but for the type of music, he always knows the right thing to play. I feel the same way about the Edge from U2, as well.
@stawrman
@stawrman 6 жыл бұрын
John Green I'm not sure what that means, I hear nothing more than chords tbh, so do clarify. As for the edge, I get what you're trying to convey. I too believe in edge's case his distinct delayed simple picking really gives u2 an identity and musicality, but I can't say that for keef. Sure there's stuff like brown sugar, gimme shelter(the solos are sloggy but rhythm is great), paint it black and other stuff where his simple rhythm strum compliments the music. If you've heard pinball wizard by the who, that's an iconic rhythm song which really brings out Townshend but that's not what Keith leveled to. is Keith's work enough for us to put him in list of top guitarists? I find him hysterically overrated given that in the stones there were usually 1-2 more guitarists along Keith like Ronnie wood.

Beck's Bolero hooked me on him. One of the most original and pioneering guitarists of all time. He opened the door for other brilliant players like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai - showing how traditional blues/rock could be infused into other genres and alternative ways of playing. He's humble when he talks about Hendrix, but he's in the same league. Another great video -- thanks!

He's beyond just "playing"" the guitar like everyone else. Understands what it can do like no one else. Can make it do anything he wants. Everyone should experience Jeff Beck in concert at least once.

@@ursafan40 , I have been a Jeff Beck fan for many decades, but when I saw him on this tour with Jennifer Batten, I walked out of the concert about a half hour into the show. Jennifer Batten doesn't and didn't need to be there, and is near as I can tell wasn't contributing anything to the performances. And this song, What Mama Said, is awful. What I heard from that concert was all darkness, and heavy- bludgeoning, no lighter touches anywhere. That's why I walked out. My opinion anyway. There are numerous live performances on KZfaq by Jeff Beck that are far better than this here. The thing about Jeff Beck anyway is that he is such an iconoclast, in a category all by himself, that when he's good, he's phenomenal and nobody can touch him, but when he's not at the top of his game, I just find him irritating. Indeed, it seems to be that some days I can't listen to even his better material without finding it irritating, and on other days I'm just totally knocked out and I think to myself, this guy is the number one Evil Genius of electric guitar. So that part of it is on me and not on him....

@@goodun6081 I did not see Jeff and Jennifer. I agree that the "Who Else!" album is not among his best work. He delved into techno and sounds that were too harsh for my ear too. What work he has done that was IMO great, is among the best there is. Seeing him once live was a bucket list concert for me and more a career overview. Worth the $75

I first encountered Jeff Beck on theYardbirds song ,"Over,Under,Sideways,Down"when I was 12 in 1965.He's been a favorite ever since ! He's my favorite of the three famous Yardbird guitarists and that's saying alot because I like both Jimmy Page's and Eric Clapton's playing very much ! But Jeff has always practiced at his craft more than them and they've both admitted as much ! (Also he was the first to have that "pineapple"hairstyle that Keith Richard,Rod Stewart,and Ronnie Wood adopted later on.....) (p.s.I knew a family from Wigan,U.K. in the late 70s but then they moved out of the Cincinnati area and I lost track of them for a few years.When I next heard from them the mother was housekeeping for the movie and television star George Peppard (since deceased) star of the movie,"BLUE MAX"and the television show ,"the A team"(with Mr.T)and the middle daughter Mandy was working for Rod Stewart in L.A.and then she ended up housekeeping for JEFF BECK in Tunbridge Wells,U.K. !)

I always had the utmost respect for Beck. Out of all the Yardbirds guitarist, he was the only one that continued to evolve into the 21 century. Jennifer Batten is a fan of Steve Lynch's. Steve was a teacher at MIT when Jennifer went there. Here's guitar world's best guitar solo of 1985 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJ5zlreK2LOsiYk.html

Jeff is an alchemist in the yardbirds he says I was either great or I was horrible there was no consistency a couple of years later he wrecks a car body cast doesn't know if he physically can play as he heals he developed a whole new vocabulary and way of playing revealed in wired and blow by blow at the point where many would have settled for as good as Beck willed better than reinventing everything about the way he played, I love Jeff Beck and I am in awe of Jeff Beck

I saw this tour in San Francisco. I have been going to his shows since the There and Back tour. You kind of evolve into understanding that regardless if you know his tour musicians or not, they are going to smoke. On this tour what blew me away beside Jeff, was Steve Alexander, the drummer. Never saw him before. Holy hell!!!! His fills on Star Cycle. Any Beck fan should watch this video in whole. I mean this 1999 video. Alexander is just amazing. Like seeing Simon Phillips the first time. Totally get what you are saying about his whammy technique. He has that older nut that Fender had for a while with rollers supporting the strings. I have always thought the whole Floyd Rose thing was really unnecessary. Unless you were in an 80's hair band. Beck does some real dives with the bar. But he also floats the bridge so he can go sharp as well. I think the real key is the nut he has. Speaking of sharps and flats...get this: I have pics I took from the Palladium in NYC in 1980 where he is playing a 56 or 54 sunburst, (can't remember which) and he has the headstock on the stage, body in the air and he is taking his foot and bending the neck with it. Not sure how to post them.

I love Jeff Beck’s playing but.…when you talk about the whammy bar my mind always goes to Phil Manzanera. As a door into Phil I would suggest a live version of Roxy Music’s “Ladytron.” A fine example that can be found on KZfaq is the one from the Apollo Theatre in 2001. I will also take this opportunity to suggest that you buy the dvd. I did and those few euros have proved to be a wise investment.
