One of the things Al does so well is transition speeds in the middle of a long line. He sounds like he has an analog dial on him which you can ramp in either direction and he just moves from 64th notes to 32nd to 16th etc so smoothly.

I saw Chick and Al together on stage and it was absolutely incredible. Chick' came to Albuquerque's jazz fest often and each year it was amazing craftmen at work. Al Di got me into jazz fusion in college, I was hooked! Cheers, and nice vid.

I remember buying the album “Romantic Warrior” in 1976 and being mesmerised. As the host of this video reiterates, these are four guys are absolute masters of their instruments, and together they are totally unique. For me this was the best album they made together before they went their separate ways. Al DiMeola’s almost simultaneous album “Land of the Midnight Sun” was pretty much RTF playing Al’s compositions 😊 I still get goosebumps …and a smile when I listen to this. Thank you for the breakdown, it makes it even more special.

There's nobody who could keep up with Chick's competence on jazz keys. I sleep every night to Chick Corea, often with Gary Burton. I love the "conversations" they have between their instruments. Back and forth. So relaxing. I don't sleep well as a personal trait, so it's got to be special music to help. I will really miss his soothing tunes. Not to discount him in all other forms at all. Of course I've got maybe 20 albums of Chick's.

Hard to believe I attended this tour in Minneapolis in 77 I believe. It was my first concert and I didn't know anything about RTF. Thats how I got into jazz.

What a wonderful treasure!

I saw RTF, Al Di, Stanley, and Chick with Herbie H in concert, through the years. Always a great show from these master musicians. Most memorable was Stanley Clark doing a 15 minute School Days bass solo, while standing on my table, at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly. In front his home town crowd, with his wife on keyboards.

Gosh, I know that tune, I seem to remember Lenny White wrote it. Like you said, all master players and one of my favorite bass players, Stanley! At the beginning, I saw Chick's Fender Rhoades and chuckled while remembering the ad that ran for months in every music magazine. Yeah, lots of old teenage memories wrapped up in this one for me. Thanks for sharing!

I had the distinct privilege of attending a RTF concert back in May 1975 at Constitution Hall billed with The Becker Brothers and Larry Coryell, who just released his Vanguard masterpiece "A Restful Mind." RTF was promoting "No Mystery" and played lots from their backlog including "Where Have I Known You Before." Their musicianship and artistry were off the charts!

I've been waiting for a DVD from the concert for 20 years. The whole concert is one of the best I know.

For a vocal interpretation of a Chick Corea piece, see Gary Valenciano's cover of "Spain" on the Wish 107.5 KZfaq channel, (a bus in the Philippines converted into a radio station/studio.) , or there is the same song by the trio of Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco de Lucia. R.T.F.'s reunion tour in 2008 showed they hadn't lost a step. (As far as the "B" note - I thought it was unintentional. I thought It was probably an unfamiliar or malfunctioning synth rented for the U.K. gigs. Both times he tried it, it had a really different and drastic vibrato sound, and both times he abandoned it immediately, rather than trying to make it fit better by repetition or by linking it with chromatic notes.) There are also some Y.Tube videos of DiMeola and Steve Vai jamming.

i love the way chick corea incorporates other genres of music such as classical music into jazz fusion!!!! chick corea had such immaculate touch where we all can say that chick corea was "LIGHT AS A FEATHER"!!!!!!!!,,,,no pun intended !!!!,,,,,,,R.I.P. CHICK COREA !!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent. Very enjoyable jazz. Signature phrases going on throughout to keep you involved. Sounds like the drums and bass are putting in accents like a horn section would play.

the sound of the live concert is incredible. so clear. Fil's mind is being blown away. I listened to this band lots in the late 80s, specifically No Mystery and Romantic Warrior albums

RTF were taking such big chances and soaring like eagles. There were daring and living on the edge. SO cool.

I've attempted to transcribe some of Chick's Rhodes solos... esp parts of Song of the Pharoah Kings... you just realise what a genius he was... one of the greatest of all time.

How popular were they in South Florida? Well I was able to walk up to the ticket counter and buy 8 seats on the center front row. (that's all I could afford) . RTF was my favorite group back then. I had no time for Styx, Journey, etc. I would admit DiMeola had been my fave Guitar player for decades. That has changed. KZfaq has exposed me to other players and Styles. Mark Knopfler , Steve Howe, SRV, David Gilmore all taught me how songwriting and melody are as important as speed. Still thrilled I got to see Al 4 times in concert. Al, John and Paco together was special. But every member of RTF, Weather Report, Zappa, etc were extraordinary. I also learned you could get burned combing through the record stores looking for music. Reading the back of album covers, looking for amazing artist was a normal thing for me and my friends. But it didn't always produce great music. That's what it was like when you didn't follow the pop charts. RIP Wayne Shorter.

Attended a Return to Forever concert back in the 70's. Was fortunate to get seats in the second row front. Absolutely awesome band! They made it look so easy. Talent overload!!

thanks Fil. Chick a giant . Light as a feather a classic album with songs like Spain. Weather Report was another heavy fusion band with the legend Jaco Pastorius on bass. Songs like Birdland are classics.

Chick Corea's music really did change my life, especially Three Quartets with Michael Brecker, Steve Gadd, and Eddie Gomez and the original acoustic Return to Forever with Airto, Flora, and Joe Farrell. To me, Chick represents all that is possible in music... technique, style, compositionally, anything. There was no weakness. Another great album is Lyric Suite for Sextet on ECM which is a string quartet plus Chick on piano and Gary Burton on vibraphone....seamless integration of contemporary classical and jazz style and composition.

I saw these guys 14 years ago for their reunion tour. May have been the most musically satisfied I’ve been at any concert.

The last time I saw Chick was when he toured with the bluegrass banjo player Bela Fleck. That was weird watching Chick playing Bluegrass. But I did go and see the trio during the Live from San Francisco tour. Three guys tapping their feet and playing amazing acoustic guitar segueing between each of their songs. When I asked my older brother who was playing, he said three acoustic guitarists. I asked who else? He said that is it, only three of them. I told him no way just three guitar players could fill an auditorium. I was very mistaken. the place was packed. The performance was absolutely electric, pardon the PUN!!!

Remember watching this performance at the time, was instantly turned onto this band and Stanley Clarke. And later on to jazz from this jazz fusion.

I went through a phase of listening to fusion music. I was pretty good friends with a jazz student at University and he would let me in on the technical details. Chick was like Miles Davis since he was willing to let young talent share the stage with him. I had many albums of RTF, but also I started listening to Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny who carried on the tradition of Chick's fusion journey. In fact, Chick went to North Texas State University in Denton and helped the One O'clock Jazz Lab Band make an album, and played on it. The keyboardist for that class was Lyle Mays, and there is a collaborational song with the two. Amazing person.

So fantastic. Hard to believe a jazz "fusion" act could sell so well. Times have changed.

I would LOVE to see you do a video on the music of the original jazz rock band (again the original) Mahavishnu Orchestra. I love RTF but if you thought they were top notch, I would love to see you watching McLaughlin, Cobham, Hammer. Laird and Jerry Goodman

i really have only had an ear for guitar and vocals but not bass. i used to always turn the bass down when listening to music. however, Stanley Clarke with RTF was the only bass guitarist i could discern clearly and liked so much. I cannot name another bass player that is compelling to me (oh, except Ralphe Armstrong , who was also brilliant).

Great job as usual, Fil - you're the HENRY PURCELL of our time, and CHICK will go down in history as the J S BACH of fusion, and thanks for anything AL: "For you, the day you tried to challenge Al DiMeola, you lost everything dear to you. But for Al, it was Tuesday...." AL remains unmatched, yin&yang of technical perfection, only percussionist on guitar I've ever heard, ..."forgive them, Father, 'cause they don't know who they're messing with...."

I was introduced to Return To Forever by what I can only call a serendipitous accident. In what does feel like a forever ago, I had one of my bouts of birthday, an affliction that strikes with relentless regularity. To make me feel better, a friend gave me a RTF album, “Romantic Warrior.” He had no idea what was on the album and neither did I at that moment. He had picked it out based solely on the vibe he got from the album’s cover. Once it got to the turntable it turned out that we both loved it. So choosing a good cover artist really can make a difference when it comes to sales. I’m sure that the covers of both “Brain Salad Surgery” and “Diamond Dogs” had positive retail effects. Final note, finally: listening/watching that RTF live performance, I was struck by the realisation that they played so tightly together, while still allowing for in-the-pocket solos, that they were one of the few ensembles that could successfully play a Frank Zappa composition. Thank you for the video! I value my enjoyment of it. 😎🎶🎸🎶👍🏻

Spooky Great !! :) I just viewed a vid of Mideval Overture which opened this appearance. It just was rec'd ! Had forgotten how good Romantic Warrior was. Fortunate enough to see Al open for Weather Report at Winterland and with the Trio, Davies SF but never got to see Chick. Rest In Peace, Mr Corea. Akoustic Band is a fave. ha, sorta cool bit is Stanley and Lenny are black and Al and Chick are white. Sorta reminds me of Tony Williams LifeTime "Believe It" where Alan Pasqua and Allan Holdsworth are white and Tony Williams and Tony Newton are black. Inconsequential but cool.

Al shredding. Met him at a gym we both worked out at many years ago. Nicest guy. He clearly enjoyed talking music with a non-musician fan.

I saw rtf ages ago. I found the music a bit difficult to listen to at first. But I grew to appreciate the level of expertise all of them had. I saw dimeola many times in concert. Had a ton of his albums. Stanley was amazing as well.

I noticed one disconnect in the beat where drums, guitar and bass do the 'da- da----da' beat, but Chick usually triples it doing a straight 'da-da-da' without the pause between the 2nd and 3rd beats (around 11:13). You can better hear it on the album.

This was four incredible musicians performing their craft to perfection. I enjoyed the video and your analysis very much. I know you have covered Alison Krauss and Union Station before but if you get the time, which I know is a short commodity, would you analyze their live performance of Bright Sunny South. I cut my teeth on 60's rock and roll but the level of playing by all musicians in that video deserves respect, as does any talented artist. The song is about a young boy from the South answering the call of the confederacy. It is an old song but I love the song for the quality of the performance not the content.

I got to see Chick and Return to Forever in a Detroit jazz club back in the early 70s, but thry had a sax player instead of guitar at that time. So it was really cool to see this version of the group with Al De Miola, one of the greatest jazz rock guitarists of all time. Another fine analysis, Fil!

4 of the greatest musicians on the planet. My ex bassist had a handle on Stanely Clarke.(he practically worshipped him) He asked could I play Al Dimeola, I started laughing, & said I'll never be that good. Great musicians.

Fusion and Prog Rock was very similar, only distinction i can find is that Prog had lyrics. Fusion was all about the mastery of techniques of the musicians

It's really a matter of taste, I suppose, but I actually prefer the playing of Al's predecessor, Bill Connors.
