Although blues and African rytyms are the core of the Santana sound he also incorporates jazz, rock, fusion, etc and can play with anyone from Wayne shorter to Rob Thomas . Never scared to explore ! FYI: "Oye cómo va" is the beginning of a line from the song Oye Cómo Va. It literally translates to "listen to how" and is really just the beginning of a few lines that make up the song's chorus. In the song, the singer pauses between "oye cómo va" (listen to how) and "mi ritmo" (my rhythm goes). Carlos Santana surely has the rythym!

I was lucky enough to witness this type of performance ( which is very common for Santana ) back in 1979, It was called the Decade of music tour, at the acoustically awesome Fox theater in San Diego. After about 2 hours of music, the band stopped, then people started chanting encore, he then informed the audience that the show was not over and that it was just intermission, after that the band finished playing every single song they had ever recorded. That's why it was called a Decade of Music, they played every song from !969 to 1979 it was about 4 hours. Best concert ever for me!

I worked as a local lighting tech on this tour in San Antonio, Texas. Four of us were upstage shooting the breeze during the opening act, when Carlos came out of the dressing rooms and walked straight to us said hello and talked with us for the whole opening act, 45 mins or so then we all had to go back to work. Amazing, a very nice man. This didn't happen very often for us. It was an outdoor amphitheater, still daylight. Very cool. Never forget after working hundreds of shows.

Nice job on this analysis of my favorite musician. Always spot on! So glad you mentioned Bill Graham and him agreeing to help out at Woodstock if he could bring a new band from San Fran. "Soul Sacrifice" rocked the crowd with this new Rock/Latin Jazz sound. Glad you gave his band the recognition they deserve. Chester is my favorite of his keyboardist tho I have a soft spot for Tom Coster. Carlos has always surrounded himself with top flight musicians. The other guitarist on stage with him there is his brother Jorge in the black shirt and red pants. Liked your point about the crowd. Have seen Santana live more times than I can count and always leave with such a great feeling. Always a very diverse crowd filled with the appreciation of great music, camaraderie and fellowship. Truly enjoy all your reactions. You are a wealth of knowledge, insight and analysis. Great job describing this show and this living legend. Keep up the good work!

Originally from Jalisco just like my wife Santana's family lived in the Mission in San Francisco. In 1966 l was a freshman at Mission High and used to walk past their house on the way to and from school. Almost daily you could hear George, Carlos' brother, jamming in the Garage on 18th. We lived at 24th and Capp. IMO Santana is one of the five greatest guitar players to ever grace this planet. He is one of the few who can play one note on a guitar and you know who it is. He has always been a personal hero of mine and next to the Beatles was responsible for me picking up a guitar in the first place. It goes without saying what an exceptional musician he is. Excellent analysis as per usual.

Thanks for this, Fil. I know you have done reviews of Carlos Santana before, but as far as I am concerned it is not possible to showcase too many from this guy. I have been a fan of his since Woodstock and the first album... even through the years when his explorations led him to places I could not follow. I have never seen a Santana performance where the audience did NOT get into it. His music, and his playing, always touches people. Sometimes with joy, sometimes with sadness, and sometimes with sensuality we do not normally see from a rock artist. I have seen him speak about the number of people who say their parents conceived them while listening to Samba Pa Ti! There are guitarists who are more technically proficient, there are guitarists who are faster, and busier... but there is NO guitarist who can make the instrument speak as soulfully as Carlos Santana... and his music also reaches people at a very base, emotional level. Finally, Abraxas - from the very first sounds of the first track to the final reverberations of the last track... is pure magic, and as far as I am concerned one of the masterpieces of the rock era.

Abraxas and Santana Three were the catalyst for me to take up playing organ and over 50 years later still thrashing out Hammond licks although the rig is somewhat more sophisticated these days. I have seen Santana over 20 times down the years and they have been blessed with some great inspiring keys players… Rolie , Coster , and Chester Thompson. Your analysis is spot on and in a particular when you say how his lead breaks are nearly always different with him bringing in other melody hooks. Would love you to take a look at the Europa performance from the same awesome Sacred Fire album. Great work Fil..

I'm glad you chose this song not because it's good, but more because of the latin influence on other genres including Santana's music. As mentioned in a prior comment, Oye Como Va is a Tito Puente song. Tito, a native from Puerto Rico was a staple in the Mambo scene in NYC in the 50's. The Cuban Mambo along with other rhythms evolve into what eventually became Salsa best performed by the Fania All Stars which was the record label under which the genre became widely known. Fania had more influence in jazz music such as the Ray Barreto percussion in Eumir Deodato's early records. Santana may have played a vital role in making this fusion attractive for musicians from a different field.
