In 1972, I got to hang out with Paul and Linda Eastman at Billboard Magazine 9000 Sunset in Los Angeles California. My Uncle Peter was director of advertising for Billboard Magazine. Paul and Linda were there to sign the advertising agreement. My uncle had to go down the hall for 15 minutes and I was left alone with Paul and Linda. I said to Paul "I can't believe it's you and you're really here." Paul responded "No matter who you are you have to be somewhere." The three of us laughed. Paul was really happy to have the 007 soundtrack deal. The album Live and Let Die was released in 73. He said he was really happy to have it. I asked him why. He said it was because he needed the work. I said but you're are a Beatle. Paul looked at me and he said "that was in the sixties." The way he said it sounded like it was a part he had in some sitcom years ago. He went on to explain that living as a Beatle was expensive. That no matter who you are money runs in one side of your life and out the other end. He said that this was his first real success since he was with the Beatles. For a little while Paul had a job as an A&R man with Capitol Records. He needed work and he had to stay relevant That's why he and Linda were so proud of "Live and Let Die." I asked Linda if she was related to Eastman Kodak. She said "no everybody always asks that." I said "I'm sorry." Linda said "and then they apologize." I said "okay let's just enjoy each other's company and look out the windows." Paul was on my left and Linda was on my right and we were standing at the top of 9000 Sunset looking South. Suddenly we were just like old friends. I was hanging out with friends of my Uncle. We started looking at Los Angeles it was just a lake of asphalt and concrete as far as the eye could see with an occasional island of big buildings. Paul said "It looks like somebody just went crazy with concrete and asphalt." We were like disembodied voices commenting on the miracle and the wonder of Los Angeles. My uncle returned with the paperwork. Paul signed the papers. and everybody said goodbye. Later that day riding home with my Uncle I said "They seem like just regular people to me.". My Uncle Peter responded "They are regular people with exceptional jobs." There's something I want everybody to know- Paul McCartney is a true Class A Gentleman. A year later he sent me the McCartney family calendar for 1973 with photographs of him and his family, playing with a Honda 70 trail bike, sitting in a white 1973 Cougar convertible, and playing at the beach-with a special hello. I was 13 when I met him. He remembered me a year later. Thank you Paul, that was so very nice. Unbelievably nice. I didn't realize what a big deal it was at the time. Paul is the kind of guy who would remember a kid. Granted it was a special occasion. Thank you twice...

One thing you forgot to mention: this was the first concert they played in front of a live audience since August 1966 - a full 2 and a half years between live shows. To go that long without playing in front of a crowd and to only have a couple of days to prepare and still come up with such an iconic performance shows just how good these guys were.

Rumor has it they did in fact pass the audition!

They were unbeatable. 3 great rhythm guitarists, who could also play lead. Ringo's the best "fill" drummer, but Paul played on Dear Prudence & Back in the USSR. Also, 3 great vocalists. They had no fear. Fil, you do a great job. How proud are you to have the best band of all time from your Country? Stay well!

When you watch the entire rooftop concert you realize what an incredibly live tight band they still were. Despite all their problems you can still see the joy they have when they play together. From the entire concert video The One After 909 is the most fun.

I can hardly begin to tell you the emotions that run thru my head when hearing the Beatles. Starting back with "Introducing the Beatles", it struck my soul to its core. Thru the years, the Beatles continually progressed and matured with albums like Rubber Soul, etc. I maybe a Yank but I knew these guys were something special, something you can't quite put your finger on but the Beatles had "it"!! To me the Beatles set the gold standard for those to come.

How cool. I don't think I watched the first analysis but I could watch the Beatles all day long and not get bored. My favorite has always been Ringo and I think it's amazing he could play in his wife's coat and the wind blowing his hair in his eyes. They all look like they are having fun. I saw it in 1969 and found it sadly missing George's excellent guitar riffs. John does his best to cover and glad the cruise ship never happened. Fil you gave us answers to many questions regarding this performance.

Hi Fil! Now this I really remember! How cool it was to see them on the roof..that was a big deal! Sure takes me back to a fun time! Thanks for playing one of the best groups ever! When they came to Indiana State Fair my girlfriend got to meet them...she didn’t get to go to the concert because she was with her animal in the barn...suddenly the door burst open and there they were! It seems security decided to hide them in the barn until they could safely get out! My friend got to just sit, and talk with them as they waited......she still was talking about it years later, but so would I! ✌️

You've likely been told this already, but part of the charm of your videos is when you're smiling at certain parts of what you're watching- just thoroughly enjoying the music the way we can all relate to as fans of (artist here) Like, how *I* feel when I'm in awe & admiration watching a video with Rush or The Beatles, for ex. I get the impression you're also reacting to how charmingly dated some videos & performers are. That make sense?

I am always astounded by Paul’s confidence and command of his live performances. He is never in any doubt. He is masterful always. He never misses a beat. Four such fine musicians and singers, always something new to look at, admire and watch again, for me. Will never get old. I enjoy Fil’s comments on the Beatles because he is such an incredible expert and is able to explain from a musician’s perspective what is going on, degree of difficulty and how things get done. I have the full rooftop performance, I tried posting it to KZfaq but it got taken down. The full performance is incredible.

It should be noted that this kind of rooftop performance HAD been done before.... Jefferson Airplane did a rooftop performance in New York City on roof of the Schuyler Hotel on November 19, 1968. The Beatles would have undoubtedly been aware of this - probably chatter within the industry, and may well have decided that it was a pretty good and simple idea for them. The Jefferson Airplane also filmed their performance, but not being Beatles it has received much less attention over the past 50yrs. You can do a web search and read about it yourself if you like (I won't put the link here). I've had the pleasure of actually visiting that Savile Row, Apple rooftop during visit to London and got a couple of photos while up there. What a privilege!

Grade 6 is when I just jumped into the music of The Beatles. By grade 7 I was listening to them all the time. A boy in both grades had the same Let It Be shirt on a lot and he told me who passed away and who were still alive. My aunt and uncle saw Paul live in concert a couple of years ago and they told me it was the concert of a life time. The Beatles pretty much opened the door for music in my life. After that the greatest musical acts just kept on following me. Then came QUEEN, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Elton John, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, pretty much the entire British Invasion.

Luckily I downloaded a copy of this entire rooftop concert a few years ago so I can see it whenever I please. The Beatles last concert - an amazing performance, one of the greatest moments in rock and roll history. I remember seeing the Let It Be movie all those years ago on the big screen and weeping in the theater as I watched. I think they passed the audition. Thanks, Fil, for your thoughts on it all.

Actually, this is the first time I’ve heard about or seen the rooftop performance. I wasn’t a Beatles fan in the 60’s. Thanks to Fil, I’m re-examining many things I missed in my teens. This was a real deja vu moment, though, because one of my favorite movies is “Across the Universe “, and now the rooftop scene in the movie fits in.

At the end of Dig a Pony, on the Let it Be album, you can hear John say, "me hands are getting too cold to play chords." So yeah, it must have really sucked playing up on that roof. It's a true miracle that the performance and sound quality of the recording is so superb!

I did not know: 1) This video even existed. 2) That it was such high quality given the circumstances. For me this was a semi religious experience. As I get older I appreciate The Beatles more and more. As a kid I didn't get it but now, to me, it's like watching Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and John Payne discuss democracy. Phil you always present a well thought out examination of all the elements of a performance and even what was going on around the musicians that could affect them or their musical capacity. Always interesting. Playing the drums and recording and doing live performances on a much smaller scale I can relate.

When I see this performance I always think back to the portion in the film where Paul is practically pleading with John for the band to go back on the road. (At least in my DVD copy) Without having the time to watch it right now, I seem to remember at one point Paul even says to John something along the lines of ‘we can go back to being a beat band.” I guess meaning their early style music. But it was not to be. I think their last experiences touring were enough for both George and John. They will always be the gold standard for me. Thanks Fil!

Hi, I’ve seen quite a bit of footage of John playing the lead on Get Back in rehearsals (with George present and doing rhythm and fills). Also, John had said previously that the guitar lead break was his own - not a case of him playing George’s work. I believe that rehearsal footage is included in the upcoming Peter Jackson Get Back film, which among other things will finally put paid to the incorrect image painted, in the Let it Be film, by Michael Lindsey Hogg of them not getting along. I think to Hogg, the arguments and discourse were misunderstood, as virtually every band has the same situation going on in recording and rehearsals. That love/hate bond in an artistic pressure cooker is all part of being a band. Hogg didn’t really get that, whereas Jackson does.

The first time I saw their rooftop performance of Get Back, I was blown away to learn that John was playing all the iconic leads ! Not to take anything away from George, who was very talented, I feel that John was a pretty underrated guitarist.

It was so wonderful watching this again as it brought back so many memories of that time in my life. I was 14 nearly 15 and music had become a major part of who I was and who I became as an adult. Thanks for your analyzing the Beatles' Rooftop Performance from both a musician's perspective and how the weather can be a disadvantage. You just reminded me of when I saw Ringo Starr in concert at NY's Jones Beach Theater where, rain or not, the show goes on. That night, it had been raining on and off. Ringo was talking about growing in frequent rainy weather in Liverpool then said, "You call THIS rain? HA!" As if on cue, it started pouring! Nevertheless, it was a great concert, rain and all. Thanks again for all you do, Fil!

crazy to think they were all in their 20s when they ended and recorded the last beatles song, in 1 april 1970, the song, i me mine. ringo starr left beatles in 68, and paul had to play the drums in some of the songs in the white album

thanks for this Fil, the rooftop concert is one my favorite things of anything ever. back in the day people put on rubber shoes as to not get fried, George and John have sneakers which would have had rubber soles, as most shoes of that era, so the Beatles were saved by Rubber Soul...yes I said it. lol. it is lucky they didn't burn the building down.

I would like to suggest that you might review / analyze Jefferson Airplane's 1989 live rendition of "Freedom" I saw then perform this song in Chicago during their reunions tour. I really feel that Grace Slick is one of the most underrated singers in rock history and yet truly one of the original Queens of Rock if not the original. Her vocal prowess on this tune in the live performance was amazing. Thank you for your consideration. Keep up the Great videos!

You mentioned George and Eric Clapton playing together. They played together a lot. They both have credits on one another's songs, sometimes not even with their actual names. For an example, George and Eric wrote Badge together, and George is credited as 'L'Angelo Misterioso'. Badge got its name through Eric not being able to read George's handwriting. George had written 'bridge' where the bridge was for the song, and Eric read it as 'badge' thus they named the song that. In this case, the odd name for the credit was due to contractual obligations, which makes sense. Absolutely stellar band and musical geniuses within the band. An interesting song to tackle would be A Day In The Life, especially the Anthology version. It's haunting. Lennon, not liking his voice, liked to have mic effects on it, but the best part is the intro count he did of 'Sugar plum fairy sugar plum fairy'. There's a video of George Martin listening to that in one of the outtakes, and he looks joyful and quite sad at the same time, remembering working with John no doubt. No one will ever match the Beatles in what they contributed to music, not ever. Love your analysis as usual, Fil!

I was 13 when the movie Let It Be came out. My mom had always supported my obsession with the Beatles, and she always enjoyed watching their movies, tv appearances, etc., because she said they always looked like they were having fun. She took me to see the movie at a drive-in, and when it was over, we drove home in silence, both of us realizing they were all finished as a group, and very sad and depressed. One of the worst days of my young life... that, and the day I found out that Paul married Linda instead of waiting for me😭

FAB4 forever!!! This footage was the chance for those who haven't seen them live before to do so in movie theaters in 1969 - which is not so different from concerts before and after covid-19 - depending on where you stand, the big screen is mostly what you can see. Hi Fil - great job. For sure Get Back was number 1 everywhere - even here in Brazil. I saw Let it Be a dozen of times (literally). Is so good to see Beatles playing those great songs; but in fact this film is depressive. ‘Cause you leave the cinema with certainly that the end of band is very close. It was inevitable. My heroes were up to be gone. I was so sad to me at that time.

I don't understand how they could play their guitars in such cold temperatures. There is a reason why guitarists warm up their fingers in a warm place before playing.

I will never forget my exposure to this one in a life time music 🎼...the Beatles! I started High School 🏫 school 1969 and was shocked when the Beatles broke up! Ppl don’t know the greatness of Billy Preston! So many gone! They changed the world and laid the foundation for millions and millions of musicians! I was one! I switched from classical guitar lessons, to placing a LP on the turn-table and learning all the songs from there! What a world became after the hit the world! Thank you Beatles!

I laughed when I saw this song since I played it last night before going to sleep, so it's fresh in my mind. I also watched a description of "All Things Must Pass" by George Harrison. The producer (Phil Spector?) went over to look at what material he had, and there were hundreds of songs. George had been writing all the time as the non-Lennon/McCartney guy and only was allowed two songs per album. He definitely is a man who earned many people's respect and love. I think one of the best videos you have done was the Carl Perkin's Tribute organized by Dave Edmunds and George. I heard that George damaged his dressing room door with his smile. BTW could you analyze Rockpile or Love Sculpture?

Wings of Pegasus. The electriacal cables were made up of all different lengths plugged together. No overload protection.Also something special happened that day for their last live performance the Beatles caught "fire" and re-discovered the old mojo. The last act by the Famed Beatles was to disturb the peace for which they were fined. One can only wonder what the Director Peter Jackson has been able to make of the footage. This was always my favorite guitar solo from the Beatles, probably favorite Beatles song. So raw....I was so surprised when I found out it was John on lead.
