did you know that Burton made these lyrics up on stage - he was late getting back to the stage one night and Randy started playing that riff and Burton got back to the stage and just started singing. They found someone in the crowd that had recorded it and used the tape to learn the lyrics as they couldn't remember them, but they knew they had something.

One of my favorite rock bands! Randy’s kids refused to believe he was a rock star, until they were inducted into the Canadian hall of fame. 😂. Kids will keep you grounded. Love it. Thanks Fil.

Randy Bachman had a concert in Edmonton Klondike Days Exhibition where the whole crowd was silent listening to him play...he mesmerized them all, including me. Finally, he had say something and ask, "Are you alright?" They rushed the stage and danced standing on the chairs cheering to watch him and his band play their classic songs

Guess Who is definitely in my top five finest groups of all time. Randy was the heart and Burton was the soul. They had phenomenal talent. I think they captured the essence the late sixties and early 70s as well or better than most. Songs like American Woman, These Eyes, No Time, Undun and many others , hit after hit.

Randy was totally “in the moment”, that sums it up quite well. He’s another great guitarist that is under recognized. He can lay it down as he did here and I think he also has an extensive knowledge of jazz chords and progressions. Thank you for showing that, I really enjoyed it.

Randy Bachman has told the story of him skipping school at 16yrs old in Winnipeg to go down the street to hang out with, and learn guitar from his first teacher, Lenny Breau. That influence is where the jazz licks in songs like "She's Come Undone" came from.

There was allot of emotion and putting it all on the line for this specific show. Playing for their hometown of Winnipeg in front of some family and friends. Weather was horrible this night and they stopped the show halfway through. This was the first song they played after the delay,it was all or nothing. May 9 1970 it hit #1 on billboard,50 years ago today.

Another interesting thing about this 2000 tour is that the original Guess Who members had just gotten together to do this after many many years of being apart. I went to one of the concerts on that tour. They were 30 whatever years older but the performances were as tight was if they had been playing together all along.

I have been a fan of the Guess Who, Burton Cummings, Brave Belt, and BTO for decades. This performance was great. The tightness of the band, the grooves, and the singing. Burton Cummings' voice has not changed, since I heard him in the 1970s. I saw Burton Cummings 4 times live and met him. I saw Randy Bachman 8 times live and met him. We Canadians have world class musical talent, for sure. I love your videos. Cheers, Fil!

My friend and I hitchhiked to a Guess Who concert when we were 15 years old saw them in a club with maybe 150 people one of my first rock bands.Years later I moved to Kitchener Ontario and I was listening to his radio show on CBC when he spoke of the genesis of this song at the local curling club turns out it was a mile down the street from where I was living,not sure why but it made me proud of the local music scene once I started to learn some history.

Randy Bachman is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock music, he shreds his guitar in this song and the playing with a drum stick is a Randy speciality.

I saw these guys with Joe Crocker at the NY State Fair right after they got back together. Best concert I ever saw! RIP Joe.

Randy Bachman does a weekend radio show called Vinyl Tap on CBC radio one. Usually plays music from a theme and tells stories about the industry. Very entertaining to anybody interested. It isn't podcast because of copyrights on the music, but is repeated several times each weekend.

Randy Bachman gives me hope. Those kinds of sounds from a guy playing with such small guitar hands. When I'm stretching to get those bar chords with my wee hands, sometimes I go, "If Randy can do it, I can do it."

The best thing I like about this guy is,he never has anything bad to say about any artist.

After so many years and a lot of water gone under the bridge, Randy can still play the main lead solo pretty well exactly as he did on the studio recording of this song. Not to many players seem to do this.

My mother was the biggest Burton Cummings fan. The first 10 or so years of my life was all The Guess Who and Burton Cummings music until I got a paper route and was able to buy my own music (The first albums I got was Metallica's Kill 'Em All, Iron Maiden Piece of Mind and Ozzy Osbourne Speak of the Devil). But ya mom was all about the Canadian rock, April Wine, Chilliwack, The Guess Who. Randy Bachman has a radio show on the CBC which of course she listened to religiously... Great vid Fil... Rock \m/

This was in my brothers crypt collection. Imagine most of the classic albums ever made locked in a basement for years and years and then re-discovered! "Hendrix in the West", The Doors first five albums, "Flowers" by the Rolling Stones, "Revolver" by the Beatles, "Quadrophenia" by the Who, "The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" by Traffic and "The Best of the Guess Who", etc... Gold Mine!!!

"The Guess Who" one of my favorite bands with a roster of top 40 hits back in the days. Randy Bachman's solo here has a bit of Roy Clark playing going on. Burton is still playing live gigs and he and Bachman have a tour planned. was supposed to be this summer but it was postponed due to Covid.

Another great thing about Randy is, he's a walking encyclopedia, or Who's Who of music. He's been playing and touring so long, that he knows, or knew, EVERYBODY in the rock world. He's got great stories about just about anyone you can think of. Not JUST rock either. For instance, he took lessons from the great jazz guitarist Lenny Breau when they were neighbours.

First band I saw in concert, in Flint, MI. They were great, but it was after Randy had left the band. Dominic Troiano was playing lead (hell of a guitar player, RIP). Burton's voice has always been great.

Man I love your analysis Fil! This is my home town band -- lol ... this was recorded in Winnipeg (where they are from) on New Year's Eve 2000 and the show had been rain delayed with a serious storm but the crowd all stayed and when the rain stopped out came the band to finish the show. Truly an epic performance.

Drummer Gary Peterson is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I thanked him for doing it for so long for all of us fans. At the end of the show, he walked up to me at the front of the stage and handed me a drum stick! He now lives in North Carolina.

Burton Cummings now lives in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He lived in LA for decades working in the music business but I think things got so crazy in LA that he just had to make a bee-line back to the prairies. Says he loves it there, a small city of about 40,000, because they had so many great experiences playing all over southern Saskatchewan back in the 1960s. You should react to "Running Back to Saskatoon," the live version. It really sizzles.

Great choice of video and analysis of The Guess Who, Fil. I was living in the States at the time when I bought Wheatfield Soul. Friends loved it, and I would say smugly, “Yeah, they’re from Winnipeg.” Their typical response was, “Where?” Burton said in an interview about the origins of American Woman, “it was all stream of consciousness at the moment stuff …it was all just spur- of- the- moment.” We can all thank the Gods of Rock for that kid with the cassette recorder. I love how Bachman drives his solo like he's flooring the gas pedal of a 67 Chevelle Anyone who hasn't heard The Guess Who's 'Live at the Paramount' album is missing out on one of the greatest live albums every made. FIL! I was watching this again and thinking about the guitarists who were in this band... Kurt Winters and Dominic Troiano... You should do a series on analyzing each guitarist who played in the same band. It would be interesting since most successful transitions involved the guitarist and the band having to adapt their styles to fit. A lot of people think it is more like when Blackmore left Deep Purple to form Rainbow and don't realize the difference is that Blackmore built the band around his ideal rather than stepping into a band with an established dynamic...

As is usual, if this band was American, they would have been world famous, and Randy might be in the top 100 guitar players. Phil, what do you think?

That concert was at a curling rink in Waterloo, On. It is now Glenbriar Home hardware on Weber street and a plaque is on the wall commemorating that night.

This is another one of my favourite reactionalyses of yours which is why I have returned to it. I said pretty much all that I had to say in my earlier comment but, I did leave one thing out. Watching Randy play his free form solo, I'm left with, "OF COURSE you play a guitar with a drumstick, you silly person!"

This concert is 30 years after the song debuted - I can hear in Burton Cummings voice that he has had to move his voice down into a lower register with age (something you have pointed out with other singers in other videos) but still giving a great rendition. Randy Bachman's later band, BTO (Bachman-Turner Overdrive) also has great tunes like "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"

I would like to mention the Guess Who post Bachman (LP) Live At The Paramount , Seattle , Washington , recorded in 1972 . Remembering Kurt Winter .The band plays a long 16 minute version of American Woman that brings the house down with a drum solo by Gary Peterson that put his drum kit to the test !

I saw the Guess Who in '71 (Cole Field House at Univ. of Maryland). I was thinking that Randy Bachman was with them at the time, but according to Wikipedia, he left the band in '70, and went back to Winnipeg to form another band (Brave Belt, which evolved into BTO).

I saw BTO and Bob Seegar in the same concert, I think it was Bob opening for BTO. Great times. Good analyses, love your comments about speaking another language. We always pronounced it Bachmann, never Bachmann.

For me, a lead guitarist, it was eagerly awaited as it is such a great song for improvisational solos. Of course I'm no Randy Bachman but I got to stretch my playing as much as I could with this song.
