I think he was underappreciated in the US. He was adored in the UK and the rest of the world. He won numerous Awards and also sold over a hundred and fifteen million records in his lifetime. Not to mention he was awarded as the most played artist for a period of 20 years straight on British radio. That's no small feat, considering all the other British acts that you're up against.

Rosa Miller Fair point - I can only speak from a US perspective. I still maintain that considering his immense success in the 80s to mid 90s, he fell hard out of favor afterward. ✌️

If there is one song that is underrated it’s One More Try. I can never understand why Father Figure got played so much on the radio yet I barely heard OMT, which has got all the emotion and the range in it. I have many happy memories of me as a young man trying and completely failing to sing Kissing a Fool and One More Try :)

Sorry for the very late comment Fil. I decided to have a quick search after watching your analysis of Karen Carpenter tonight to see if you had done anything with George’s voice. I never realised just how great George’s voice was till the Freddie tribute. From then I got into his music quite a bit. Went to see his 25 tour and took 3 generations of family with me such was his appeal to all ages. The auditorium fell to absolute silence as the intro started to “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” cover, you could hear a pin drop when George’s bell like voice was not ringing out. I just stood there with tears running down my face such was that power to switch off a dancing, singing audience and deliver such a performance to wide open mouths and eyes - the missus and mother in law were quite shocked at my reaction, but it really got me. Some of his stuff that you reference like Mother’s Pride shows his astonishing vocal capability, especially the run up towards the end (all the husbands all the sons etc) - maybe one for the digital vocal analyser. I remember singing Praying for Time off that album in a karaoke bar in Majorca one year (bit different from the usual old standards belted out I thought) and it is such a brilliant song that the people moving around in the street outside just stopped to listen. I doubt many had heard it before. Bloody enormous crowd that night who kept requesting more George songs. Loads of fun.

With or without reverb, George Michael IS one of the best live singer/performers, EVER. It really was too bad that he was "associated" with a blend of the 80's disco/dance scene and "pop" music, because his range allowed him to perform ANY genre of music. He knocked me dead with his rendition of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", which happened to be my brother's funeral mass song. Fil, I'm sorry... I'm not a musician, so I don't always appreciate the accompaniment, but I really appreciate your analyses... it helps me gain even more appreciation for musicians and what they can do. Thanks!

I watch you instead of the artist as seeing your smile of appreciation is so sweet. Your comments about emotional connection was really interesting. I felt that when George sang he held the soul of every listener in his hand. Such power! But never abused. This was so strong at the performance of Someone to Love with Queen. Even years later seeing that video is heart stopping with the intensity of his connection with the audience. I would like your comments on his performance of the Long and Winding Road at the Linda McCartney memorial as the song sems higher than George normally sings.

Very much appreciate your tribute to Mr George and your obvious admiration for him as a musician, singer, songwriter and composer/arranger. He was a HUGE musical talent who ALWAYS strove to exceed expectations in recordings and in live performances, the consummate professional and a true British Gent. He was hounded by a few too many scandals/embarrassments, but he handled them as well as anyone could, given the media frenzy in what could have been fatal blows to his career. The humiliation must have hurt him, being the fodder of late night comedy. But he answered inquiries straight on, and with the fun/funky “Let’s Go Outside.” Creatively, With a little wink and a big willingness to laugh at his misdeeds, but not apologize. George Michael started out as a teen pop star churning out light, fun perfect- for- MTV fare; who knew he would throw off the marketing and music video productions, go back to the music, grow so immensely as an artist, and write songs that meant something to him and were deeply emotional and personal. in his “Older” songs he shares his sorrow, and loss of probably the love of his life taken away by AIDS. Everything about his music coalesces, deepens, matures. He had long since achieved superstar success; he’s making music now for himself. Beautifully. And that performance is quintessential George Michael. technically, he could not be better AND he is totally connected to himself in the moment, to his emotions, as he sings-that mind/ heart synchrony, the human being as a pitch perfect instrument. “I can’t make you Love me,” is one of the most beautifully hauntingly saddest and wisest songs about the human condition in modern music. Abd Mr Michael carries it for us in the saddest most beautiful and loving way to the last note. Delivers it to us As a gift and as his truth. Yes, Mr. Michael carries a lot of Loss and pain with him, and like Billie Holiday or Judy Garland, He can access it easily, resonating with it and sending it our way. He wants you to connect with it. He feels less alone when we open our hearts and let him in. Artists truly give themselves to us and it’s rare. George Michael was medically very fragile at the end of his young life of hard living. He feared aging; many insecurities returned for him related to how he felt about being an ethnic person in Britain, his “look.” . Sadly, tho not isolated, he wasn’t partnered. He died alone in his home on a Christmas morning. God Bless and RIP. You gave so much of yourself and enriched us. It’s tragic when one cannot find a way to adjust to a different life phase. I think he was a lost soul at the end. RIP Sir George.

His version of this song is such a great example. You feel that lyric down in your soul and it's almost a dream like connection. If you know anything about George, you know he was a perfectionist in EVERYTHING he did. His singing included. So impressed Fil that you have taken such an in-depth interest at such a young age. You are such an incredibly talented music analysts and have definitely have given credit where credit is due when it comes to such a magically gifted singer, songwriter and producer as the awesome George Micheal. I have loved and followed George from a very young age and to have such a great talent as he was to leave us at such a young age is in itself, very unfortunate for his loyal fans of the music he created. As Andrew Ridgeley said in his tribute to George during the Brit Awards 2017, “A Supernova in a Ferment of Shining Stars” was a very emotional but fitting tribute to such a great musician as George Micheal. Thank you Fil and Wings Of Pegasus for your brilliant look and analysis into such a great artist and my very favorited voice of all time as George Micheal. ❤️

It truly is a master class in vocalization and had our world been more open-minded, he would have been as big as Elvis & Michael, as he was massive Elvis level from 1984 to the early 90s. I can't believe how easy it came for him, writing Careless Whisper at 17! LOL His voice was so amazing live, saw him twice on back-to-back nights in Aug 2008, and he was stunning. GM Forever... thanks for the video, good points about the ability of him to just go to where he needed to go vocally, with no worries!

of note, he was on tour in the USA in 2008 for the first time in 17 years. I saw the final two shows with my best friend.

I used to hate 'Careless Whisper', it was one of the most requested songs when I hosted a request show in Abu Dhabi. It was also the one the locals always wanted on in the KTV, mostly because of the accompanying video. However, I came to appreciate and love George Michael, a great talent.

I’m so glad that you did this on George Michael. His arrangements were absolutely brilliant. His voice was smooth as liquid gold. You really hit the nail on the head! George told his life stories in his songs, which made us all so close to him emotionally. His voice was crystal clear. He could go from a breathy whisper to a powerhouse dynamic. What a voice! George had it all. The voice, beautiful personality, kindness, generosity, and killer looks. Miss him so much💜♥️xx

Thanks for the in depth analysis on George's voice. His voice and songwriting, as you said, was on a whole other level. What a talent....what a loss....
