The Doobies are so amazing live. Got to see them a couple of years ago. Hoping we can get back to concerts soon. I have heard you talk about them before. If you have not had the chance to see them come on over to the U.S. when they come back out. I’ll let you stay in the guest room and make you a pot of chili!

What I like about your videos is the look on your face when you're watching the clips. You can really tell the admiration you have for the people playing the music; real music that is - not the X Factor disposable rubbish that will be forgotten in two weeks. You also seem to have found a list of all my favourite bands (massive Doobie Brothers fan!) Keep the good stuff coming it's much appreciated by people who love music.

Wow -- love this one, Fil! The most, seemingly, simple tune, can be massively difficult to carry off, seamlessly! The Doobies were genius, in their own right -- definitely, one of my favorites & I love this beautiful piece of music, played to perfection! Thanks Fil, for the incredible analysis -- I would imagine, as a Musician and Teacher, a piece and performance like this one, must make your heart skip a beat, a little... From Harlem, New York -- rock! Goodnight/Day!✌🏼💖🎶🎵

A lot of people probably don't realise that rock guitarists are not always one trick ponies. It's always good to see guys showing their acoustic chops AND with quality finger picking. Although he doesn't feature here, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who played with the Doobies, has some lessons on KZfaq which show how versatile he is. Worth a look if you haven't seen them.

Loved the Doobie Brothers. When l was touring we did alot of original songs written by myself or co written with our lead guitarist, but we did cover some songs...Queens Stone cold crazy and The Doobie Brothers Without you, from The Captain and me album always got huge reaction from the crowd! Two great rock songs. Great Review my friend! 😎🎼🎶🎵🎶

The Doobie Brothers have always been such a tight band! I saw an interview a while back where Patrick Simmons said he wraps gaffers tape around his thumb to attach a normal pick to it instead of using a regular thumb pick! If you look closely here, you can see it! Too funny! 👍🏻🎸

Epic video and love this picking! I’ve met them 3 times and they are just so easy going! Front row and have tapped their boots! Pat and John still play this in 2019!!!! I must say I saw them first in 1978 and at least 10 times in 40 years! My absolute favorite!!!! Snuck backstage and Pat was sipping tea for his pre performance drink! Also was interviewed by a tv station one night and made the news! I’m so in love with the DB! Thanks for uploading this awesome song! Epic analysis!!!! 💋

Hi from Hawaii. This is an awesome duet that I never heard and I want to thank you for presenting it on your feed. The title of the song says it all, it is in a similar style of Hawaiian music that we call "Hawaiian slack key" style. A lot of original songs that was created in Hawaii after the Portuguese, who arrived in Hawaii in the late 1800's, introduced the guitar to the Hawaiian people was played in this style. Some of the iconic players in Hawaii that used this style was Gabby Pahinui. the Beamer Brothers, and Olomana. Take a listen to these recordings and you will hear the same style. Thanks again for the great presentation.

Clover's John Mcfee grew up in Mill Valley ca.. A little younger than John Cippolina { Quicksilver} and Terry Haggerty { Sons of Champlin}, I always thought he was the strongest MarinCounty musician, among many others .Strong country and bluegrass influences, along with the other stuff. . Saw Clover many times, mostly at the Lions Share on Monday nights { 1968-71} ? If the instrument had strings, John " got on with it".Fiddle on Orange Blossom Special , Pedal and lap steel, mandolin tunes. Tele, and SG, Rock n Roll, R/B stuff. This is when he is barely 20. Clover was hired by Nick Lowe to be the supporting band for Elvis Costello's 1st record. Keep em coming Fil.!

Ok..now you're hitting close to home. When these guys were just getting recognized they, the band lived next door to me, well 1 door down. We had words a few times because they parked their rig full of gear in front of their house. The trouble was we lived in Montara, California at the time a little beach/surf/fishing town 10 or so miles south of San Francisco. We had dirt roads too narrow for big rigs and cars. Even my Scooter (HD) could hardly get around. So, we argued. The brilliant thing is my roommate was the drummer for Norton Buffalo, and fantastic Jazzmen lived all around town. Neil Young's ranch was up the hill. So there was absolutely great music all around. The town wasn't known outside so we all felt safe to hold concerts and jams with just locals. Mid 70s was heaven, really.

I'm really enjoying your discussions Fil and you always seem to hit the same thing or things I key in on, but you explain it better than I can. I'm a guitarist here on Maui and I've seen Pat Simmons maybe 4 or 5 times live. He usually jams in the background with other local musicians at fundraisers and takes the part of a rhythm guitarist, very low key. But I've noticed that when they nod to him to take a lead, he plays like an absolute metronome! His timing is somehow beyond perfect--he quietly puts everyone on stage to shame with the clarity and precision of his leads, which are also musical and technically correct. I always struggle with precision when I play leads (I'm great on emotion!), and Pat Simmons makes it look so easy. Kudos to him, and kudos to you for noticing in just this quick view!

Fil... John McFee is the guitarist on Elvis Costello's first album, 'My Aim Is True' - and has featured on a number of Costello albums over the yuears. He's also all over 'Almost Blue' - a given, really, seeing as he's a top country pedal steel player, too. McFee's own band at the time was Clover - the entire band was on the whole of My Aim Is True. Fun factoids, fans!

Great you chose SKSRag for this analysis. Every album has one instrumental track. For the 'record', I became DB fan the moment I heard Tom Johnston 'chukka chukka' rhythm on LTTM. All their hits from the seventies are as relevant today as the where then. But maybe the most interesting aspect of this multi-stylistic, versatile, extremely talented yet highly underrated outfit are its 'deep-cuts'. The song in the video is just an example of the band vast catalogue of superb tunes only fans are aware of. On one hand, there are the acoustic marvels such as I Cheat the Hangman, Texas Lullaby, Tell me what you What, Toulouse Street, Captain and Me, South City Midnight Lady and Rainy Day Cross Road Blues. Best of all: Clear as the Driven Snow. On the other end of the scale, the band offers hard rocking, funky songs like Eyes of Silver, Sweet Maxine, Dangerous, Need a Little Taste of Love, and the band magnus opus WITHOUT YOU.

I just discovered your channel and have been binging on it for the past couple of days. (You know how one needs to take a KZfaq journey once in awhile.) As someone who loves classic rock, what a wonderful channel; great music combined with learning more about my favorite artists. I can't recall the last time I enjoyed a KZfaq journey this much! Thanks for sharing your passion. Any chance you'd be willing to share your top favorite rock guitar all-instrumental track? If you're not into favorites, I'd be equally thrilled to hear your thoughts on my personal favorites: Slack Key Soquel Rag (Doobie Bros), Little Martha (Allman Bros Band), Mood for a Day (Yes), County Down (Phil Keaggy) and Stealing (Leo Kottke). (I know Kottke doesn't qualify as a "rocker", but I couldn't help but include this one.) As you know, rock all-instrumentals are rare. Any others you can recommend would be greatly welcomed. Cheers!

John Mcfee was originally with Clover out of Mill Valley California. The guy playing the black acoustic. He also plays pedal steel and acrylic violin. When Clover came back from England they bought Elvis Costello with them. Clover became Huey Lewis and the News. John did the guitar work on Costello's first two albums, Allison. He's also played with Huey Lewis on the Sports album. He is a corporate Doobie, lived in Glen Ellen California on Hill road, now lives in Tennessee. When I was 14 he would sit at the studio door in the sunlight playing pedal steel. This guy is a remarkable musician, his specialty is strings. David Lindley is also a remarkable musician he can play anything with strings. John was the first guy I ever met who had an E-BOW. But it wasn't a little one, or one mounted under the bridge like Bruce Springsteen's, it was a big bulky chrome thing that plugged into a 110 outlet, 1973. John McPhee is a remarkable musician. John should be more famous than he is, part of the San Francisco Bay Area Music family. Nobody can really believe that Elvis Costello made it. He was doing this cross-marketing thing between Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Costello would make other musicians wince. What made Elvis Costello was that he surrounded himself with musicians that were better than him. John Mcfee.

The first song John McFee ever learned to play was 26 Miles Across The Sea. He taught the song to Chris Hackney, who owns Sky Blue Studios. Chris taught the song to me. C, A minor, F and G. Chris hung with Marty Balin. Part of the San Francisco Bay Area musical family. Marty Balin and Paul Kantner formed the Jefferson Airplane. Marty wrote Miracles, in the 2000 royalties from the song still paid Marty's taxes. Marty just passed away. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his contribution, he made the world more enchanting. Godspeed.

Than Michael McDonald ( What a Fool Believes, Minute by Minute) comes in and just launches them into space. A tight Band with great Talent and Technique. Thank you for Highlighting them. Shaka Bro'🤙

I had the chance to see the Doobie Brothers live(with the Who) and this was after some of the original members left . i was very dissapointed in thier performance (Joan Jett blew them off the stage. Any thoughts on her)

It's feel, music is an "inside job" and these guys are meshing really well. The Eagles do this really well too. The opening for Tesla's Little Suzi is another example of this. I saw your X Factor videos lol. You even had Sharon Osbourne smiling but she said you were "too clean" and wanted to put a couple of tattoos on your face ha!!! 😀😀😀🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎🤘🤘🤘

Haha yeah I'm planning on doing those vids on here to give the whole story but haven't got around to it yet! Yeah I wasn't going to get tattoos for a talent show, I wasn't expecting to get so far as for the first 3 auditions I didn't even sing! But as I said I'll do a vid in the future on it!

Fil, this was a refreshing change. Ole Clarence Bumpus on Flute and vocals. He was an original member from the 70's Jeff Skunk Baxter days. Brilliant! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 🍻

First of all, that's the late, great Cornelius Bumpass who played several instruments including the saxophone, flute and piano. Perhaps you're thinking of the late, great Clarence Clemons who played sax with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band? Secondly, although there are no vocals in this song, Cornelius certainly could sing!

It’s not easy being unison with acoustic guitars and no percussion! A very very beautiful piece! Randy Rhoads did the same thing in Dee with nylon and steel strings in unison.

Nothing against Cornelius Bumpus, but I find the flute distracting in this version. My favorite version of this is the one from their "Farewell Tour '82" album that was recorded at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

While we are looking at acoustic performances, take a look at Stephen Stills playing "Crossroads". What do you think of this effort? I really enjoy this performance. Here's a link to the performance. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7qKqZCBv5uXlGw.html

Why are they called "The Doobie Brothers"??? According to an interview with the band's co-founder Tom Johnston, the name was coined by a roommate he was living with when the group was in its infancy. “We had a guy in the house who said, 'Why don't you call yourself the Doobie Brothers because you're always smoking',” Johnston told the Minnesota Daily Press.
