I see comments about Edge's technique not being pure etc. He makes emotions rise & fall in an instant. He's simply a magician. May it continue.

As a songwriter I can think of 3 guitarists who's sound gives me everything I want and like from an electric guitar, Gilmore, Knopfler and Edge.

Great stuff, Fil! I remember an interview with Joe Satriani, and he praised Edge's gift for melody. He said "see, no one will remember this after an hour (shreds through a scale), but people will remember this (strums the opening to U2s I Will Follow). Joe earned a lot of points with me on recognizing that.

@Dale Cooper I just read an interview (from 2008) of Joe for an argentine online music magazine. When he was asked about innovators after Hendrix, Satch said: "probably, the two players who tried something different in this time were Tom Morello and The Edge. When they play a song is immediately recognizable, like when Hendrix, Beck, Page or Cochran played" Amazing. * Sorry for my bad english BTW 🙏🤣

Personally, I'm not really fussed if The Edge is a gifted guitar player or not. What he does is create a feel that can really affect you emotionally and I think that's a great thing.

Yup. And it's great that a great guitarist is reacting to this cos he just gets it. Hendrix also played with a lot of 'feel'. Like the guitar was an extension of himself (that prolly sounds pretentious😂)

Along with Johnny Marr, The Edge puts on a clinic on how to play guitar without the usual metal tropes of distortion and string bending. Haunting, mysterious sound.

The Edge is sublime. He is technically brilliant, but what sets him apart is, as you have said, his style/sound. He creates an unmistakable trademark sound. He does what very few musicians can, and that is amazing. And he is so humble about it. Absolute legend.

I go back and forth about U2’s legacy but the concert I saw of them in May 1983 at a smaller venue was EASILY the best concert I’ve ever seen or heard... The atmosphere was so spiritually thick and I was devastated for like a week afterwards... One of the highpoints and best experiences of my entire life. The sound quality was also perfectWhile being totally blown away by the whole band as a unit and the whole crowd interaction thing I was also struck by how excellent and pleasing the sound quality was across the whole sound spectrum. The timbre Of The Edge’s Guitar was just a continuous rush experience. Like I said the afterglow from this concert was so intense. Words cannot describe it.

U2 get a lot of grief for reasons. Mainly being around so long, and Bono... for some reason. But when you've made albums like The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, War, Unforgettable Fire... somewhere down the line, that is all that should matter.

I always appreciated Edge, he seems like a very talented and creative person. All those effects resulted in some great and memorable music over the years (I still think his solo in the Fly is one of my favorites). There was always a sort of alchemy involved with that band; it's been fascinating watching them grow up over the decades from boys to men to the elder statemen they are now. I can't deny that U2 have given us some songs for the ages and Edge's unique sound and play style was a key factor in those achievements.

I love his rifts on In the Name of Love and Gloria. I could listen to him all day, even doing his sound check, something magical about his playing - yes, as you say, his sound is distinctive. Great analysis.

So clearly and succinctly stated, Fil. You have a true gift for explaining technical concepts so that anyone could understand. Dallas Shoo, Edge's guitar tech, who has worked with him for over 30 years, also deserves some recognition for helping Edge develop his style. They are two of a kind in work ethic, personality, and intelligence.

U2 is one of my favorite bands...even without the words, the music moved me. It was so beautiful!! The Edge is one of a kind. I would assume the hate is the popularity that spanned so long. They sound awesome, they are awesome period!

The Unforgettable Fire remains one of my favourite albums for that trademark expansive sound, the melodies, and song dynamics. Great music for wide open spaces, which we have an abundance of here in AU.

Here's a guy who just knows how to sound good. That whole band is scary good that way. They *always* just sound good. Cold start? Single tune in a TV appearance? Outdoor environments? Whatever. Nothing seems to affect them; they turn a key and the motor starts, running fine. That don't happen by itself. Fil knows what I'm talking about.

The Edge has always been one of my favorite guitarists -- on his own, his sound just encapsulates you and lifts you through a journey of sound... U2 has its distinctive "voice", in great part, because of The Edge's audacious, brave & unique playing!.. What an amazing gift, to turn an instrument into your own personal love letter, to the listener -- as a Singer, I know what creating a mood feels like from the inside out but, to take an inanimate object and learn to allow that object to speak, in your voice, with all of the details and qualities that entails, is brilliant! Thank you Fil, your knowledge & unabashed love for music & Musicians, shows through in every video! You're helping to make a nothing day, shine for me! 🌝 The journey continues!... I love how you describe The Edge's playing as " melodic and atmospheric". It's a 'feel' he's got naturally, no doubt about it. As a long time U2 fan, I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis because you put into words what I felt all these years. BAD from "Wide Awake" gives me goosebumps STILL.... Thank you Fil👍🤘

I like the Edge because his guitar playing gives U2 it's unique sound. I think Pete Townshend had a great quote that applies to The Edge. "We Never let our Abilities get in the way of our Performance!!!"

The Edge may not be the most technical guitarist but I think he’s brilliant and has created his own iconic sound. All guitarists using an electric guitar use effects. Edge is self taught, can write, and I think he’s a good singer as well. All around nice guy too, I met him in 1987 and he was humble and kind.

Lisa Knell I agree. I met him a few years ago in Malibu, California on a random morning. He had a baseball cap on and not his trademark beanie. We were both at a gas station and we both filled up. There was some issue and he was waiting for a worker to clear out some of the store traffic and maybe fix something or put something in his car. I cornered him inside near the beverage section and he answered my questions the best he could, but in hindsight, I could tell that he was afraid that I might highlight his presence and get him into a bother. I was saying things to him like “You inspired me to get a Gibson Explorer” and a bunch of other things. His response to virtually everything I said was a brief chuckle and “is that right?”. I asked him which guitar his used on a particular song (can’t remember which) and he said “I’ve no idea to be honest. Things are always chaotic when we’re working in the studio”. Even though I’m a dude, I’d say I was fan girling a bit and he was composed. He let out some nervous laughter here and there. I left without asking for an autograph or a selfie (because I’m an idiot), but I’m pretty sure he was happy to have me leave. The baseball hat did NOTHING to disguise him.

I remember an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine long ago, and he struck me when he said that, as he was getting interested to play guitar, he used to listen to all the greats, Clapton, Hendricks, Page etc. but he didn't do it to learn how to play, but rather to learn how not to play !, it is very difficult to avoid the blues and everything that your brain has absorbed through the years, and did it !, amazing. thanks for the reaction.

The Edge is an Absolute legend A genius musician and songwriter U2 are the last of the great rock bands I’ve been lucky to see U2 6 times live from there prime to of today and they are fantastic live, I’m still yet to see a better live band The Edge has blew me away every time such a unique sound he has created Bands like U2 should be embraced whilst they are still here. Hands down one of the best bands of all time.

Yeah have to agree. Not a guitarist my self I’m a drummer but played with a lot of guitarists over the yrs and a few have dismissed him but I think he’s up there with Gilmore Marvin Moore knopfler e t c as one of those guitarists who you can tell with one or 2 notes exactly who it is and that is a great talent in itself.

Yeah. It really is. Critics say he can’t play because he normally doesn’t play a traditional solo. Meanwhile there’s The Fly’s menacing vibe and songs like Bullet The Blue Sky and New Year’s Day

Funny how people say Edge is too heavy on the effects. That’s rich. It’s an electric guitar. Most players are using effects. I think people focus on the effects because Edge’s playing is slowed down. It’s often more open and less driving. He plays rhythms with chords plucked, as he was doing here. But he aware of his reliance on effects and mentions so in it Might Get Loud.

I've heard many people say that Edge is not a very good guitarist, and it's all just the effects. But that's like saying that Rembrandt made beautifull paintings because he used good brushes ......

I see this guy as a sound designer and a supremely talented one with an almost zen like mastery of mood, emotion, mystery and atmosphere. The fact that he uses guitar at all is because, apart from his singing voice, it's simply the most convenient and accessible tool for him to use. All you guitar snobs and haters are entirely missing the point if you want to nitpick on his technical playing skills. By being humble, dedicated, modest yet hugely successful at what he sets out to do he's way ahead of you!

Brilliant ! I just love to listen to your analysis, you are the perfect person to do this because you have been educated and have hands on experience and are absolutely talented in so many areas of music . So much fun to watch even though I don't understand everything but love to try to figure it all out. I didn't know who this guy the Edge was until I heard him play that "riff" and then I figured he was part of U2 . Definitely has his own unique signature way of playing . Love it , kind of has a dreamy feel to it. Ethereal was the first word I thought of.

The Edge treats his effects as part of his intrument. They are not add-ons, they are an intregal part of his instrument, almost as much as his strings. Clean playing, unique identifiable sound, memorable singable melodies, and command over all the sound he produces. I guess I must have a different definition of 'sucks'.

Sorry Fil, I have to share another L A story with you. I saw U2 on their very first tour of the US at a tiny club called Radio City in Anaheim, CA. It was the Boy tour. I swear there was not more than 50 people in the place. This was 1980. Seven years later, they sold out the L A coliseum on the Joshua Tree tour. I was there for that but the real kicker was the final night of the Joshua Tree tour at Tempe Arizona. Tickets were sold nationwide and people were seated by what State they were from. BB King opened and the footage was used in Rattle and Hum. They may not be the greatest musicians but they put on one hell of a good show. I'll remember that night for the rest of my life.

It is so refreshing to hear someone praising Edge and explaining the difficulties inherent in his style. I don’t really care if someone doesn’t like a particular thing but that doesn’t mean it’s crap (and I’d wager most of the hate is over politics rather than ability or technique). And I think it would be hard to argue that “War” and “The Joshua Tree” aren’t classic albums in the pantheon of rock.

Saw U2 at Philadelphia for the Joshua Tree tour. Pink Floyd had been there the week before and snarled traffic due to road work. People left their cars on the streets and walked to the show. On the radio they kept repeating PLEASE don't leave your cars. PLEASE be patient. U2 promises they won't start playing til you all get here. We couldn't get into the parking lot. They said it was full. Went around for the third time and saw a guy with bolt cutters cutting a hole in the parking lot fence. We jumped the side walk as did everyone else and filled that section of parking lot they said was full. It was a race to the door from there and true to their word, U2 waited till the venue was full till they came out. Bono had sprained his arm in a fall. He brought Bruce Springsteen out to play in his place. The Edge was spot on with spine tingling accuracy as usual. PS have you heard of Philip Sayce? He's a Hendrix - SRV type guitarist.

Great to understand Edge’s playing so much better. Thank you for helping even a guitar-dummy like me (but a rock music LOVER) appreciate what’s going on in the performance. And the inspiring encouragement for beginning players too. Makes me want to restring and enjoy experimenting with my Dad’s old acoustic again - it’s been years. Another great video. I enjoyed it. The other day I heard Rick Beato say something I found fascinating.. “U2 albums are never complete. They just come out. And from that release date forward, we are all in the studio with them hearing the evolution of those albums.” That really clicked for me. You can listen to songs of theirs from the 80s and they sound different in the 90s.. then different again in the 00s.. then different again in the 10s.. I only bring that up because Edge is the one responsible for that. It’s such a cool dynamic to hear clips from four different decades and be able to tell when it was performed based on how it the evolution of the sound.

I am actually glad that you analyze this video (great movie by the way ). I don't think that I know of another guitarist in the last 35 years that has had a great impact as The edge without ever playing a lead. I'm glad I searched for this video because I was going to ask you to analyze The Edge. I'm not a musician, but I've always thought Edge was a great guitarist. After I watched It Might Get Loud, I was a little disappointed that he didn't seem as technically skilled as Page and White. But now I can see that he is incredibly skilled; it's just a different skill set. Thanks again, Fil!

True musicianship isn't about circus trick playing, it's about writing music that reaches into people's hearts and souls and then standing up in front of thousands of people and play it just like it's supposed to be played. Some musicians are lucky enough to write three or four classic songs in their careers. The Edge has written about ten times that number and he plays them all so well live it can be an almost transcendental experience listening to him. So no, The Edge is not a good guitar player. He's much, much more than that.

The Edge is fantastic and actually has many songs that don’t rely on effects. Also, he makes great use of the Strymon Big Sky and gets that scrapey/scratchy sound by way of Herdim Blue heavy nylon picks (the real secret weapon). Arguably, the nicest most humble rock star around.

Edge doesn't use Strymon, he primarily uses a Korg SDD3000 and occasionally TC 2290 (for Streets)

Yep not a Big Sky (though it is a good tool for getting an Edge sound). Usually his 'classic' sound is two delays. One is set to a quarter note delay, the other is the famous dotted-eighth note delay. Besides the Korg and the TC 2290 he famously has depended on the Memory Man for his sound. If you get a original Memory Man, max out the delay time, and play with the delays as dotted-eighths you will be playing at the tempo of many of the early U2 tracks.

Great video. The Edge is so underrated really. He once said something very simple but very profound about why he plays the way he does. He said: Well, I like the sound of a ringing guitar. Like ringing...like ringing off the hills. It’s what l like. I love his music. Full stop. There are no qualifiers around that statement having to do with skill or technique or whatever. None of that matters when the end result is this: I’d rather listen to the Edge. After decades of thousands of guitar sounds & rifts from other artists, I’d still rather listen to the Edge. What he & U2 creates is more than sum of its parts. The music makes you *feel.* It keeps you coming back. It’s a sound you just WANT to hear again and again and again. That’s art.

Really enjoy your analysis Fil!! You hit the bulls eye. Melody and technical ability sometimes come together... and when it does it's very speciall. Other times it's just the music and that's nice too. Doesn't have to be technically great to enjoy. Keep the videos coming!! And please put the boys from skid row on your list.....they rock!

Really Nice job here! When a U2 song comes on you know it by the melody lines/Bono's Voice. It happens in every single song. Few Bands are this gifted, seriously. U2, Rival Sons, Greta Van Fleet, Shinedown, Alter Bridge, Screaming Trees, Pearl Jam, all do it one way. Theirs. ^5 🤘Rock♪☄.

Did read all the comments,well,loads of them and it's very surprising.(no mention of him).Of course,this is about The Edge and his way of creating melodies especially for Bono's voice..But i am dead certain that the real heavy dark full sound of U2 comes from another guy..Most of the time standing there,cigarette in his mouth,looking around,smiling and always on time,although he's the only member who missed a total show once..Without him U2 would sound differently..Some will say,a other could do the same thing,i doubt it.Adam Clayton.Another wonderful man..That's that U2 sound..His bass-guitar..His playing on it.Thank you very much..

Nice breakdown! I've had a love/hate relationship with U2 over the years, but have almost always enjoyed The Edge's playing. FYI: You might be pleased to know that you got a mention on the local radio morning show in Philly (Preston & Steve, WMMR) as they talked about Roy Clark's passing. Your video about him we specifically referenced! Bit of free promotion is always welcomed, eh!

An intelligent and nuanced review of the Edge's playing. It's hard to understand doubters really. Nobody disputes that Prince is a great guitarist even if they debate whether he deserves to be ranked in the top 20 or 30 with Hendrix and SRV or Gilmour and Page. Yet as much as I love Motherless Child and Purple Rain by Prince I can't hear anything that stands up to the intensity of the Edge's solo for Bullet the Blue Sky in Sydney. Mentioning Jack White (who I like) in the same context as Page and the Edge is surely laughable. (Motherless Child is awesome though. The guitar, VOCALS, weird dance moves - unbelievable!)

The Edge is so underrated because many guitarists, especially younger ones, think that speed and flash are the signs of great skill. Composition, control, ACCURACY- that's what matters. Speed means nothing. If you can play 50 notes in 10 seconds, great. But are they the right notes? Use the Gilmour rule- doesn't matter how many notes you play, it matters how you play the notes you do. Edge is a sonic and compositional master, end of story :-)
