I have to wonder if it is a price thing over in the UK. Meat tends to be a lot more expensive over there than in most parts of the US and A. I can sympathize because, lately, California has been approaching European and UK pricing as far as food goes and it puts a big dent in the monthly budget if you want to eat healthily.

Both! We're gonna need at least a week to cover just the basics. Day one ribs and BBQ with cobbler for dessert. Days two and three Tex-Mex, cause there's far too many variations for one day, flan and sopapillas for sweets. Day three chili, cornbread, and Blue Bell ice cream for dessert. Day four chicken fried steak, cream gravy, the works, topped off with pecan pie. Day five we hit up Fredericksburg for peaches and German food on our way to the coast. Day six seafood in Corpus or Port Aransas. Day seven Whataburger. After a week of sweet tea and Dr. Pepper he might be able to fly home without a plane.

Thats the cool thing about America. Most Americans have roots from immigrants, and they brought their various food. So not only are the people a melting pot, so is the food. I live in the gold rush area in California, and one of the local food specialties at a neighborhood restaurant is a pasty. Which came from your side of the pond. Cornish miners bringing their food when they arrived here to work the local gold mines.

Wisconsin has The New Glaurus brewery, which produces Spotted Cow, my Brother’s favorite beer. As he’s in South Dakota and I’m on the eastern edge of Minnesota, I regularly make a beer run across the border just to buy him a case of Spotted Cow. Also, chislic is fantastic, and I haven’t had it in too long. It cuts straight to the point; deep-fried red meat cubes on a skewer. South Dakota is a ranching state, so there’s a load of beef and lamb/mutton. There’s also a thriving deer hunting tradition, so venison is very popular.

(I know no one is ~supposed~ to eat a dozen in a sitting, but in my defense, it's usually after I've spent the day hauling the week's wood for the woodstoves and I figure at that point the woodburner's diet means I can splurge. In fact, my jean size gets ~ smaller~ in the winter and god knows I eat what feels like my weight in chocolates and cheesecake during the same time. Here's hoping it stays the same this winter!)

Ellis Island brought in thousands of Sicilians and southern Italians during the Italian Diaspora of the early 20th Century. They replaced the Irish immigrants that had come over in the 19th century after the Irish Famine. The Jewish Diaspora soon followed so NYC is an interesting mix of all three of those cultures plus African American and Puerto Rican cultures in the late 20th Century. Now, Mexican, South American, Middle Eastern, East and Southeast Asian cultures are adding their flavors, among others. NYC has always been the Crucible of the Melting Pot in America. I've lived in Utah my entire life and I still don't understand how we're so associated with Jell-O. When we hosted the Olympics and you could buy pins of green Jell-O and shredded carrot I was completely baffled. I had never even heard of putting carrots in Jell-O. Fruit, yes, but carrots? If people buy more Jell-O in Utah than other states, I'm going to guess that it's because people here have lots of kids. Jell-O is cheap, easy, and kids love it. But seriously, I never thought it was a big deal around here at all. If you ask me, our state food should be cheesy potatoes, or "funeral potatoes" as some people call them. I promise, you'll never see a large lunch gathering or potluck without funeral potatoes, which is how they got their name. If there's a funeral, the Ward (LDS congregations) will have people bring food to the family and/or supply food for the people coming to the funeral. And cheesy potatoes are a staple, thus "funeral potatoes." But people make them all the time, not just for funerals.

NY state had very high concentrations of Italians. There was a pizza like food in Italy, but 'Pizza' as we know it now is an Italian-American invention, so you are pretty spot on with your assessment. As a Western, New Yorker the rest of the state always gets short listed, we have cuisine that varies by city and region. This is true in many large states dominated by one city. If you like chicken, we have it: NYC - Pizza, Bagels with cream cheese and lox, chopped cheese Buffalo - Buffalo Wings (Chicken), Beef on Weck Utica - Chicken Riggies, Tomato Pie, Half Moon Cookies, Utica greens Rochester - Chicken French (like veal picatta, but with chicken), Garbage plates, White Hot dogs Binghamton - Speides (like a kabob on a sandwich) Plattsburgh - Michigan Style Hot Dog (like dogs in the midwest) Syracuse - Salt Potatoes Finger Lakes - Grape Pie BBQ is maybe the seminal US cuisine and it varies by region: Kansas City Style - Tomato based sauce, most popular around the country Carolina Style - Vinegar and red pepper based Texas Style - dry drubbed and smoked then there is Nashville and others. You can find decent BBQ around the country. Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse NY is doing a decent job of KC style (but get it in KC if you can) Hope you make it to the states. May take a few visits to get all the regions in.
@squirrelbuddi
@squirrelbuddi 3 жыл бұрын
If you ever visit I'd suggest choosing a region to visit rather than just winging it. A lot of tourist get here and don't get to experience a lot because they forget how huge the country is and so they end up spending most of their time just trying to bounce between cities without really getting to see much or try things. Maybe even just choose a cluster of states to visit that are close to eachother so you can spend more time touring and eating. :)

I'm from Texas! They got it spot on with TX bbq - we do dry rubs and eat it with pickles, white onions, and white bread (the cheaper the bread the better) and we especially love our brisket!! I know the video you covered was just doing one food per state but if you ever go to Texas we also have tex-mex and tacos - specifically breakfast tacos, but you can find authentic Mexican tacos basically everywhere in Texas and sample a variety of Mexican cuisines from different regions as well! Where I'm at in Austin it's mostly interior and Yucatecan cuisine. So, to recap, in Texas you get bbq, tex-mex, and authentic Mexican, not to mention the ramen and chinese food in Austin and the fact that Houston is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the US with a vast array of restaurants from almost every country. No joke. Chilean, Nigerian, Malaysian, French, Pakistani, Taiwanese, Swiss, Iranian, you name it.

Wisconsin has so many foods that are iconic to the state . Frozen custard it has a higher fat content and more egg yoke in it resulting in a very dense super creamy frozen treat. Year round Friday night fish fry , your choice of cod or perch with fries or potato pancakes , rye bread and cole slaw . Beer , beer and more beer . Paczki ( a polish jelly filled fried doughnuts) they are eating on the day before Ash Wednesday. In Milwaukee during the summer there is an ethnic festival nearly every weekend an the Lake Michigan lake front . Starting with pride fest and Summer Fest ( the world’s largest music festival) . There is Irish fest , Polish Fest , German Fest , Festa Italiana , African world Fest and on and on . The State Fair , canceled last year because of covid but for three week ends they had all of the food vendors in different areas of the Milwaukee Mile race track set up to sell fair food that you drove around and could get all of your favorites to take home. They even had the famous state fair cream puffs.

I was thinking avocado was a really lazy answer for California. But to be fair, it would probably be hard to identify a favorite for a state so large and varied as California. Similarly, in my home state, the "Philadelphia cheese steak" is really only a thing in that one city. You don't really see in around in the rest of the state.
