This is LITERALLY epic story writing... here's why "Beard After Hours" is an homage to the 80s film "After Hours" by Martin Scorcese, "After Hours" borrows heavily from the chapter called "Circe" from James Joyce's novel "Ulysses", "Ulysses" was a 20th-century reimaging of Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey" (Ulysses is the Roman name for Odysseus).

And with that brilliance, it emphasizes just how good they are even more when you know this was a filler episode that they only found out they needed to come up with after having planned the season already.

This episode is packed with cultural references. The whole thing is inspired by the Scorsese film After Hours (hence the episode title) and there are, just off the top of my head, references to A Clockwork Orange, Run Lola Run, Are You There God-It's Me Margaret, and many others including a bunch that I'm sure I didn't understand myself.

Yes this is a stand alone episode like the christmas one. It was good to see what a day in the life of Beard is like given how mysterious and quirky he is. And it gives you an idea of why he knows odd things and just rolls with the punches (so to speak) and why he loves Jane despite many viewers thinking they have a toxic relationship.

I am not a fan of this episode, but I do love the interactions with the three Richmond fanboys. Beard’s reward for them to get on the pitch at Nelson Rosd was perfect-they probably have never been able to afford to attend a game in person.
@panamafloyd146914 күн бұрын
Yeah, when they came out of that tunnel and saw the pitch was magic. What I'd give just to stroll across ours at Mercedes Benz Stadium once. Hell, it's plastic, I probably wouldn't even hurt it.

A lot of people had gripes about this episode, but I loved it. Beard could totally carry his own show.

@7:40 - Good catch! The Lady in Red is from The Matrix. Others have noted a number of the other movie references in here with the "after hours" being the foundation. I understand that some folks don't like this as they want what they expect, a Ted Lasso episode, but this was full a Coach Beard episode and his reality is very different than Lasso's (and the rest of us). For me it is one of my favorites as it is unique and surreal, just like Beard. Not only does it have a lot of movie references but a lot of different aspects for discussion afterwards like the meaning of the key which keeps trying to be lost and not working. Overall, an ingredient you weren't expecting in one of the items of your meal that makes it more interesting.

@@DNReacts , some people were just upset that it didn't move the plot along. Others of us (myself included) loved the character development for Beard. Of course, at the time we didn't know about the two 'standalone' episodes. Brendan Hunt is largely loved by footy fans in the US. We discovered through interviews that he fell in love with the game while doing improv comedy in Amsterdam. I call him the 'Token American', and wonder how many of the little 'easter eggs' in the series were written by him * for * us.

This episode made me love Beard even more because he really is just the most random, wild and down for anything kind of guy but it gets highlighted on a smaller scale so even thought this episode is supposed to be bonus.. I love how it showed Beard and who he is outside of Richmond. We also get a very small nod to this episode later on, you’ll see.

I always assumed everything in this episode was real accept Gary and Thierry talking to him directly. I kinda thought she texted him the club address at the end and that's why he went there. Then he danced all night with her and shows up at the club without going home. That's why he's sleeping in his chair at the end cause he was partying all night. I like this episode cause i've had many an all nighter out partying back in the day.
@alecerdmann850514 күн бұрын
This is maybe more about the last episode as well as the previous season, but...one of the big turning points in how Rebecca feels about Ted is during the darts scene. When he's talking about people being judgmental, rather than curious, he mentions that his dad had passed away when he was 14. The camera then cuts to Rebecca reacting with what appears, to me, to be subtle shock, guilt and sadness. There is a clear difference in the way she treats Ted from then on, leading up to her admission of her plan at the end of the season.
@DNReacts14 күн бұрын
Yeah I agree, it definitely seems like a turning point in their relationship!

I had a different experience watching this episode for the first time. The ending of the previous episode had me thinking Beard was going to die. I felt the show had kind of prepped us for something with the Doc's accident. The way Beard walked off with Ted saying be careful and planning to meet in the morning seemed to be put in there because something was going to happen and he was going to miss that meeting. That feeling was reinforced when I watched another reaction video for that episode and one of the reactors said the same thing.Then I felt it was confirmed when I saw the next episode is called No Weddings and a Funeral right before I started watching this episode. It ended up really intensifying my experience with this episode and made it one of my favorite episodes of TV ever.

08:59 - old stunt trick. You disguise the impact absorbing material in trashbags & boxes, then throw in some powder to make it look like it's really trash. That's why jumping into dumpster bins is such a trope in movies/TV. It's visually exiting, and not really very dangerous to the performer/stunt double.
