We take a look at the hot takes surrounding the notion that Hong Kong's water supply. Today, a vast majority of the water going to Hong Kong comes from China. This has become a lever over which the Party can exercise control over the city-state. How did such a state of affairs come to be? Were the British asleep at the wheel?
Here we take a look at the history and development of colonial Hong Kong's water supply.

Ultimately, all these colonies were held by force, military and demographic. Even with treaties, if you can't defend it, your hold on them will end. In 1941, the Japanese demonstrated the British could not defend Hong Kong. So, when faced with an increasingly powerful and aggressive Chinese force, the British, lacking the means and the will to defend the territories, negotiated their own departure. Water was merely a lever the Chinese used to sweeten the terms.

Well the ceded territory of Hong Kong, i.e. Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, are just too small to have most things that are vital for a self-sustainable country be placed. Not only the reservoirs, but also the airports, container terminals, power plants etc are all located in the New Territories. Since China won't agree to extend the lease of the New Territories, the remaining part of the colony is not able to survive herself. Or maybe we should take Gibraltar as an example, to keep the scale of our economy small enough to pack everything within the ceded territory.

Gibraltar has a basically open border with Spain though, and it depends a lot on goods and workers from across the border

There's Singapore also, & its reliance of foreign labour & talent has been believed to also have been a limiting factor to how tightly it could close its borders during the pandemic. We also import ~90% of the food, so when their prices rise, the gov't would be more easily able to blame it on imported inflation also I think (vegetable prices from neighbouring Malaysia have doubled in some years, while some fishes now reportedly go for almost S$10 (~US$6.35)/100g during the Chinese New Year festive season as of the time of writing)

I don't think your reasons are valid...The reason why Communist China did not take over Hong Kong by force was because it honoured the Treaty. The reason why the British had to give up Hong Kong was because the 99 year lease expired. So simple. What strategic error are you talking about? Do you think the British are stupid? Or they trust the Communist? No way they will knowingly put themselves in such a position.

Singapore gets it's water from Malaysia pre independence on treaty sign and filed at UN ! The real cost of our water I explained to HK people...is that every Singaporean a nd even 2nd generation PR have to serve National Service...for 2 years...and do in camp traing (some years involving oversea training that can lasted a month.) Be ready to mobilise in 6 hrs ...should Malaysia break this treaty ! Fortunately that have never happened...and Singapore is working toward total self dependency on water..with expensive water recycling network (every drain sewage drainage...are treated and recycled ).and reverse osmosis water plant !

Interesting your thoughts on how Chiang Kai Shiek viewed HK's sovereignty. If you fast forward to the present, the Taiwanese govt has foolishly wasted an opportunity to forge closer diplomatic ties with ASEAN countries by making the same sovereignty claim as PRC over the South China Sea. Very stupid strategic decision. Much better to drop the claim and get some friends in Southeast Asia.
@Asianometry
@Asianometry 3 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, Chiang largely echoed the PRC’s HK sovereignty claims. He had begun agitating for its return before the outbreak of WW2. As for the Taiwan sovereignty claim over the South China Sea, I recall it came during a time during the Ma administration - when Taiwan and mainland were very close.

@@Asianometry Based on my understanding, the ASEAN countries are disappointed with Taiwan's stance on the South China Sea claim. This is low-hanging fruit for Taiwanese diplomacy. Taiwan needs all the friends it can get.... Taiwan's industrial policy re. localisation of offshore wind is also a diplomatic own-goal. Wanting European companies to manufacture locally in Taiwan and transfer technology in return for access to Taiwan offshore wind projects is a risky strategy. If the Taiwanese govt makes it difficult for European companies in Taiwan, then this could backfire, and European governments could make things difficult for Taiwanese companies operations/exports in Europe. Trade relationships tend to be based on reciprocity....

Makes a lot of sense. Perhaps some other form of reciprocity can be found elsewhere. Maybe a fab in Europe.

@@Asianometry Heard from another YT documentary that Taiwan/ROC not echoing mainland China's/the PRC's territorial claims would violate the "1 China" principle & thus spark war. & since the latter challenges the former's sovereignty, ASEAN countries would be unwilling to establish ties (at least formally) with the former. Back in 2013 a Taiwanese fisherman was fatally shot by a Philippine Coast Guard in an area of the S China Sea where both Taiwan/ROC's & the Philippines' EEZs overlap, & the latter has refused to negotiate with the former to de-conflict their EEZs because the spokesperson said IIRC "Taiwan is not a country"

The mistake was not setting up Hong Kong for independence at a time when China was weak (say 1949), and simply refusing to give back the the New Territories. There's a whole lot of land in the world (like Karafuto) which was simply taken as "might makes right." Or (notwithstanding CKS's view that HK belongs to China), CKS might have been enough of a realist to accept material aid in exchange for granting HK's independence after he was chased to Formosa.

How is HK going to be independent when HK is dependent on China on water..and now economy ? How to liberate China when 94% of mainland chinese approve of their CPC... Many years ago...Our Lee Kuan Yew told HKer you hv 2 choice...leave or stay and try to get rich...riding on opportunities presented by China ! HKer didn't like this sensible advise !
