Thank you.... i think we all say we were born too late and missed things. I was 2 when the last main line steam ran and have never seen a proper steam working, so they don't mean as much as blue DMU & EMUs or blue locomotives, which is what i grew up with. Although i have seen a BR blue steam loco.... on the Vale of Rhediol back in 1981!

Yes I was born in 1965 and was spotting by the age of 6, still missed many warship, hymek and NBL class 22s although I saw all the Westerns….. BR Blue and the remaining green (albeit with full yellow ends) locomotives were my era but even in 1988 things were still a lot better than today’s railway…… very enjoyable video and very representative of that pre privatisation era as sub sectors and new liveries started to materialise…. the class 37 program was virtually finished with various sub classes…… Sprinters were appearing everywhere and locomotive haulage became harder to come by, and those were mostly ETH fitted class 47s but it was still possible to obtain non heat freight locomotives if you were in the know (access to TOPS helped) ….. nice one and thanks for the memories 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿😎

Oh Lord.... Thank you so so much for posting this video.... Absolutely brilliant, brings back so many happy memories of the days trainspotting at Crewe, as well as other stations and depots up and down the lengths and breadths of the UK.... Perhaps I'm a bit of an old fogey but I think that the rolling stock and locomotives were far more interesting back then...... Oh happy memories....... Wonderfully eclectic range of locos and liveries, as befitting the period. Crewe was a hive of activity back then. You never had to wait long to see something interesting. Passenger, freight, parcels, diesels, electrics, units, locos.... you had it all! Sadly the same can't be said today.

@@nigelbevan8449 Crewe isn't the place it once was. I still pass through and still film. There are lots of units of course but very few locos or freight movements through the station. You get odd moves of course, but most freight goes along the avoiding lines. There's always the chance of a new unit on test and perhaps some action on the old Crewe Deisel depot now in use by LSL.....

Unusual to see loco changes from electric to diesel on southbound trains. Nice to see a proper 37-hauled set of Mk 2 stock on a Cardiff working before it went over to the ghastly 155s. Nice white Capri with rubber-bumper side trim on the diesel depot! I like the two experts with their heads under the bonnet of the red Mini too.

Thats some hardcore spottin in the rain there chief, nice one! Loads of intersting stuff in '88 there. For modellers of the era, there's 31178 which was given DCE cabside strips and red BS shed stickers within 2 months of this vid, being around this time that DCE strips were being applied to loco's. She also had white body-side no's replacing black cabside no's, and an extra OLE warning sign above the boiler gauge on the other side for some reason. Possibly from weed-killing duties perhaps. . Also of note is how fast weathering appears on loco's. 47615 was painted into her Rf plain triple grey 3-4 weeks before this vid (photed her in the rain outside paint shop at SF DRS 23.7.88 after overhaul) and is already looking rather filthy by now! And a rather unique livery too with red buffer-beams and cowlings, and SF didn't move the nameplates so was never given sub-sector logo's. Her black marker light panels didnt last too long either, going yellow in 1989. Also, one of a handful of Rf 47's given a lower than standard body-side break-line, therefore thicker black window surrounds, another SF thing! . . Lasting in this livery until repainted into Res 2.92, was then next overhauled at Donny and renumbered 47747 in 5.94. And prior to this vid, she was always a fave being part of the GWR 150 celebrations, given a fresh standard blue paint-job with red buffer-beams 4.85. And previously being overhauled/repainted at Crewe in June 1984.

You know your locos! Yes, it was a wet day, i had been at Warrington earlier and it was pi**ing down! But i got some great video there as well. One of my Dad's mates worked at Stratford including a spell in the DRS. He was involved in some Stratford's more quirkier loco repaints! And it doesn't take long for locos/trains to get dirty, wind/rain/brake block dust all add up!

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Exactly! What also drives me insane is that when they finally had electrified the first mainline in the late 1960s everyone could literally see the difference! Classes 86 and 87 in the 1960s and 1970s immediatly outperformed everything that ever ran on diesel. In fact class 87 was in daily use until 2006 (!!) still happily running at a respectable 110mph. I mean English Electric had proven that they could build series of reliable and (relatively) fast electric locomotives. The solution was literally rolling in front of their very eyes!!! And what did they do? DEVELOP THE DIESEL POWERED HST WITH CLASS 43!!! 😡 Incredible till this very day! 😠😠 But There's good news, too.
