'Did Deleter deserve all those awards?' Dominic's answer might surprise you, but he DOES like Nadine Lustre and Mikhail Red, so don't attack him in his DMs!
Award-winning horror film Deleter (2022) features superstar, Nadine Lustre, was directed by hotshot, Mikhail Red, and won 8 awards from the Metro Manila film festival, including Best Actress and Best Director. Professional screenwriter, Dominic, was very excited to see this horror movie, which takes the perspective of Filipino content moderators to tell a modern Philippines ghost story, but he missed it in the cinema. With Deleter now on streaming, Dominic has watched this scary film and... he has some problems with it!
The screenwriter discusses Nadine Lustre's performance, compares Mikhail Red's directing to his previous film, Birdshot (2016), and asks whether Deleter actually helps represent Filipino people working in content moderation or if it exploits content moderators in the Philippines to make a movie. He also compares this Filipino movie to British horror movie Censor (2021) directed by Prano Bailey-Bond and starring Niamh Algar.

Try to watch first all horror movies in the ph and I bet you will award the deleters for the improvement they made. And the movie industry here was only creating what the audience want. And why make best horror movies when the elected public officials always create a ghost employee. Heheh!

I love Nadine. But I do agree with all of his points, surprisingly xD it's my first time watching this. My expectations were high as well. And I agree with the content moderation vs SA trauma. It's reaching when it is trying to portray Lyra as numbed from all the videos she had watched. She "ignored" what happened to the ghost girl, I even forgot her name... The movie was kinda forgetful. The first 30 mins was interesting. Even their sleeping quarters and how their pay is so long and the stress the job puts in their mental health. I was also waiting on the PLAY on whether what is she seeing is from the guilt, from the drugs she's taking, or from all the stress she gets from watching traumatic videos.

You can tell Dominic's been very careful with his critique but I admire the honesty. Ang insightful ng discussion about how this film may have missed the mark on accurately representing the subject it wants to delve into. It was a missed opportunity kumbaga dahil it went on a tangent. Also, kaya siguro iba yung feel ng Birdshot at Deleter despite being from the same director (and film editor) ay dahil Deleter was meant to be a commercial film: it stars a bankable actress, it's to be shown over Christmas...it was meant to rake in the bucks. Birdshot was geared towards a different audience. Iba yung hatak ng dalawang films I guess.

Wow. I saw Deleter awhile back on Amazon Prime (thank you DITO :P) and came away wondering what the hype was about. As a 90s kid I still have "fond" memories of Pinoy horror movies from the 70s and 80s. Looking back, the scare didn't really come from the makeup and the prosthetics, it was the tension leading up to the reveal of the aswang or the bampira or the halimaw sa banga. Once they appeared to much dry ice smoke and strobe lights and thunder sound effects, everything just went goofy. Deleter is a 2022 movie that suffers from the failings of 70s Pinoy horror - just because there's a ghost doesn't mean the audience has to see it! I fully agree with Dom's criticism of a missed opportunity to make a great horror film.

Here's an opinion that would probably irk most Filipinos. Skip Mikhail Red's films (He's more style than substance) and see Jun Lana's work instead Big Night! or Chito Roño's Signal Rock are excellent films that reflect the Zeitgest of Filipino society. Here are some of my other recommendations: Ekstra (2013) Vilma Santos Pamilya Ordinaryo (2016) Ronwaldo Martin Crying ladies (2003) Sharon cuneta

"It's exploitative of content moderators and their real life genuine suffering" This should be heard by the producers of the film because it is so TRUE. They only used "content moderation" as a launching pad for horror antics. To set the mood for the big ghost reveal. When the ghost did finally show up, grabe ang corny.... there was a scene where you can see the ghost's hands typing on a keyboard (complete with zombie hand makeup)... huh??? But I know people who work in content moderation and it is truly traumatic. nasira yung utak ng friend ko dahil sa mga nakikita niya on a daily basis, tapos gagamitin lang yun ng isang director as props. Ang insensitive nga. This is why Philippines cinema rarely come up with CLASSIC movies na talagang mamahalin ng mga pilipino. Kasi yung mga baguhan na directors and writers ngayon, instead of telling people's stories and putting them on the big screen, gagamitin lang nila yung hype or trendiness ng mga totoong struggles nila. For what? para sa award that doesn't mean anything, kasi alam ng lahat MMFF nabibili, o kaya may hidden agenda. They dont give them out kasi totoong award winning tlga. Di na tulad noon na may integrity pa ang MMFF. Sabi nga ni Dominic "the movie can be in ANY OTHER PROFESSION, and it's still the same ghost story" and if you really think about it... hayy so true. grabe. nakakahiya ang MMFF ito ang ginawa nilang BEST PICTURE OF 2022. wtf

The worst thing as well is that this film is even nominated for best picture at the recent FAMAS Awards. Well it's FAMAS, literally no one takes them seriously. Look at the recent winners and nominees. Since 2000's they have been awarding shitty movies. Also, I cannot stress this enough, Deleter is by far one of the worst film I have seen this year. It's a drag, uninteresting and just straight up bad. Same with Eerie. I don't trust Mikhael Red when it comes to the horror genre. Burdshot is good but that was it. The successive films he makes are just bland.

Personally the one who really held the movie was Louise delos Reyes. The depth of her acting at a quick screentime made the movie cohesive with Nadine's performance. I wish Deleter delved deeper into the topic chosen, because it is more than what they've shown but festival rules might have played in censoring disturbing themes, and to be presented in the same hold as Birdshot. But for a Pinoy film to produce this level of film now, the industry might be getting a renaissance so it's good to look forward for more.

It might be nice to see a deeper dive into the filmography of Mikhail Red and a discussion on how he has progressed (or not progressed) as a filmmaker. Ever since the release of the critically-acclaimed Birdshot (which is also my favorite work of his), he has gone on to release six more films, many of these being relatively successful commercially. What is interesting to see is that none of these have yet to top Birdshot’s quality, and most have also received negative to mixed reviews. I personally remember really liking “Eerie”, though it seems that even that has been negatively panned by most. A look and analysis into his filmography post-Birdshot sounds very interesting to me. Sabi rin naman ni Dominic na fan siya of the director.

Really dude, what I like about American and British cultural rhetoric is the "courage" to call a spade a spade. Filipinos are generally easily offended but many, including myself, do appreciate honesty, especially when watching reviews on entertainment. In Tagalog, trabaho lang, walang personalan. Be yourself and state your anapologetic opinion. People will hate you either way. This is the Internet after all. ❤

I think Nadine did the right portrayal of a character, Lyra, who's someone overexposed with super sensitive situations like seeing her father killing his pet dog, her life as a content moderator and witnessing her friend being molested by their boss. Someone who experienced all these have the tendency to be subtle, dark and numb looking. Maybe it's also the reason why they add the club scene because when people are drunk, they somehow express anything they suppressed inside whenever they're sober.

Sorry for being a bit late to the party. But I was a little disappointed as well after I watched Deleter. And I kinda felt bad tbh because I consider Mikhail Red as one of most modern and stylistic directors in the country. Birdshot was an instant classic, Dead Kids was brutal, Arisaka was an experience (i hope Mr. Dominic could react to these films too) but Deleter just unfortunately didn't live up to my expectations. The third act didn't not feel as scary as it did in the first act, and that's a shame. I think one of the main reasons why Birdshot, Arisaka and Dead Kids worked for me was because they incorporated the environment that the characters were living in and the consequences of living there to the story. Deleter just didn't stay true to what it was actually trying to represent.
