It's worth noting with the missing smoke deflectors, they weren't always fitted to the coronation class. They were a later addition, similar is true with many British engines, they got smoke deflectors in later modifications. (I believe the design theory was build it with out and if the crew complain that the lack of deflectors causes an issue retroactively fit them at that point lol) And in fact, while double checking my facts before posting this, I came across an old black and white photo of Dutches of Buccleuch without the deflectors.
@jasonjohnson892

You're absolutely right. Especially when the LMS started building the non-streamlined versions brand new, they never got the smoke deflectors. It wasn't til around the mid-late 50s that they all had smoke deflectors installed. I honestly like both variations. Though MTH made one error, their piston covers weren't painted green. In real life they were were black with the orange lining.

Hopefully one day we see a model of the LNER A1 Peppercorn Tornado. It is a crowd funded stream locomotive. The people who set the trust up for that steam engine, have plans to make mods engines and gave advice to the people making the T-1.

I would like to provide some fill in History: The Princess Coronations were a development of the previous Princess Royal 4-6-2's and featured a more powerful boiler with more tubes, and slightly larger cylinders and valves (Both designs had 4 cylinders). In turn, this led to better steam production and on tap power, though their tractive effort was more or less the same. Originally they were built with streamlining to compete with the LNER A4's, but the Streamlining wasn't that much of a benefit, unlike that of the A4's. These engines were used on the nonstop London to Glasgow expresses, and by the end of WWII, all engines had their streamlining removed and built to the same look of Duchess of Abercorn (streamlining hurts the maintenance and serviceability of engines). 3 of them still survive today, with Duchess of Hamilton being re-built with her streamlining in the Railway Museum in York, and Duchess of Sutherland being a regular steamer on railtours. City of Birmingham however is couped up in the museum of science in Birmingham.

Fun Fact about this class, in the 1930s they were atreamlined and they represent the big rival to the famous Gresley A4s like Mallard, with the class leader "Coronation" reaching a speed of 114mph prior to Mallard setting the ultimate official speed record, and they also hold the record for the most powerful steam locomotive ever used in the UK, at 2,511 dbhp with a tractive effort of 40,000 lbf. The later unstreamlined Coronations would earned the nickname of "Duchesses" due to so many, like yours, being named after official Duchess titles On a more personal level as a British enthusiast, even as someone with a stronger loyalty to the LNER on the east coast with their A4s, there is something that makes me admire the duchesses as a design. Where as the A4 is sleek and fast like a blade, the Duchess uses its brute strength even today to absolutely demolish the steepest grades in the country. I would recommend searching for "The Duchess Deliverance" here on youtube, it's a perfect introduction to the class.

10:40 a lot of British O gauge trains use the hook and chain couplers as the actual couplers instead of an unrealistic coupler seen on European HO and OO scale trains. Keep that in mind in case you ever buy Dapol's British O gauge rolling stock. It's a real shame that MTH didn't make the streamlined version of this engine, as one went to the United States for the 1939 World's Fair, 6220 "Coronation" (which was actually Duchess of Hamilton, which survives today)
@lukecarruthers
@lukecarruthers Жыл бұрын
They do but you may find some others are fitted with "buckeye" type couplers which might (must admit I haven't tried it!) but they might be compatable with US style ones. Darstaed British outline coaches, BR Mk1s for example, can be specced with those couplers.

Duchess of Abercorn has the highest officially recorded power output for any British steam locomotive. This was recorded on a test run coupled to a dynamometer between the loco and the train in February 1939. Duchess of Buccleuch received smoke deflectors in April 1946 and was not painted into BR green until May 1952. The locomotives (4)6230 - (4)6234 were the first batch of Coronations to built without streamlined casings. The number 4 at the start if the running number being added after nationalisation in 1948.

Not all of the Duchess class locomotives had smoke deflectors. When they were initially built for the LMS they had a standard single stack exhaust and no smoke deflectors. After the companies were consolidated and nationalized into British Rail more efficient Kylchap double chimney exhaust systems were fitted, which caused soft smoke to obscure the crew's view. Smoke deflectors then had to be fitted.

I love how different countries call different types of locomotives different things. Its kind of like how you Americans want to call 2-10-4's a Texas where as we here in canada call those a Selkirk, If I was going to get a layout together, I would have to have a Selkirk on it, I Need a Selkirk, CPR Empress (2816) (The only surviving Non Royal Hudson), 2860 (The royal Hudson that did Excursion service in BC, 2850 (The Royal Hudson that is the nameskae of the class and actually carried the King and Queen), and maybe just maybe CN 6060 (Bullet Nosed Betty) who worked in relief for 2860 whenever she needed service. But part of me says it wouldn't be so great to have all CPR and one CNR in my fleet.

Awesome Eric! You got not only one but TWO MTH Stanier Princess Coronation Class Pacifics! That was so nice that your girlfriend got you one of them as a Christmas gift! It's a shame that this turned out to be the only British locomotive MTH made and that they didn't make an HO/OO version of it, but they did an incredible job on it and its carriages. It looks and sounds like the real thing! MTH did announce they were going to make the Flying Scotsman and other Gresley A1/A3 Pacifics in Premier Line in 2008, but they cancelled them, very bad move, because that would've been a fantastic locomotive that would've sold well. Heck, I would've bought one because I was looking forward to it. Not to mention that they could've made an LNER apple green A3 Flying Scotsman with attachable/detachable American pieces to give you the option to "Americanize" it, but this turned out to be a missed opportunity on their part.

Honestly wish there were more British steamers available over here in 3 rail AC power. Mostly made do by adapting some of Lionel's Thomas line by replacing the faces with smokebox doors, adding some detail parts, and repainting to make semi-scale British steamers. Also have some of the old Hornby clockwork O gauge engines (really come in handy when the power goes out) and rolling stock. As another guy who is passionate about more than one country’s trains - it’s been great and weird to see two Duchesses on your 3 rail layout. I’d love one too. You will also be wanting some all Maroon British Rail ex-LMS MTH coaches (I presume they also did that livery) to mix in with your Crimson and Cream ones. So cool that you have one each with the early and late BR crests. I wonder if MTH did a red version - a Duchess with late BR crest in the red livery is the tops. While I love American steam, they are often, even passenger locomotives, very industrial and utilitarian. With British steam, there always seems to be a higher level of refinement. American streamlined locomotives tried to achieve this, but it seems (and I am not an expert by any means) that the English were just better and more consistent.
