After recovering a VHS from the former Crewe Training Centre, here's one of three ex-BR films recovered from it. This one was produced by the British Transport Film group and covers the modernisation and re-signalling of the WCML from Glasgow to Warrington with footage of the construction of the equipment, designing the new systems and installing it all across the whole route.

Great film. The closing music is ace. Another KPM Records gem.

What a shame all that modernity is now also gone, last time I came past Glasgow Central, Motherwell, even the Kingsmoor signalboxes were all boarded up, very shortsighted because with the removal of station staff, the only people in an area of railway control is a driver of a train and a guard if you are lucky to still have one and every incident is at least half an hour away from attending where at least having signalmen strategically sited along a line meant very quick response times and taking control of a potential disaster. My late father a signalman was one of the first railmen to arrive at the Lewisham disaster and he RAN all the way down the line from North Kent East Junction signalbox and it was said he as did the other first responders saved lives.

A very interesting film, and worth contemplating the changes that happened. One question comes to mind, though - what happened to all those zoom lenses of the mid to late century?

2:40 Point machines both Cog and belt driven. I can see some GEARS , don't you find "cogs" in windmills and waterwheels.? Surprised at the use of tooth belts in point actuators.? I wonder how much of this manurfacturing capability still exists in the UK.?
