One of Julia Roberts’s all-time favourite looks is the Armani trouser suit she wore to collect a Golden Globe for her performance in Steel Magnolias back in 1990. The burgeoning superstar had ducked into the Armani boutique in Beverly Hills ahead of the ceremony and found the now iconic outfit in the menswear department, she tells Vogue. “I could not have known that it was gonna become this statement outfit,” Roberts says of her ’90s tailoring’s current ubiquity on Instagram and Pinterest. “I just thought I looked fabulous... and I still have that suit.” Watch the full episode of British Vogue’s Life in Looks, as Julia Roberts breaks down 17 of her most memorable looks.

Her Valentino dress at the Oscar is the epitomy of spotless statement at the Oscar. It was already Vintage when she wore it. Not everyone can wear black at the Oscar and stood out. You need to have the right hair and skintone. Only her and Cher made it work. But in her case, it was not custom made, that just made it more special. It is definitely in the podium of the best 3 dresses ever wore at the Oscar

Back in the day I was working for a luxury fashion house and Julia Roberts was in town filming a movie. She walked in with an assistant and they were dressed casually and appeared very unassuming. Julia had a big scarf wrapped around her neck partially covering her mouth. She also had eyeglasses on and no makeup. At first I didn’t recognize her but when I approached and greeted them I knew. I engaged with them and they were both very nice. Once we were all in the fitting room (it was huge) I got them drinks and let them know we had a lot more stock in the back that wasn’t on the floor. I offered to take them to the back area to see everything and they seemed pleased. Once we were all there I casually asked if she was in town for work which was my way of acknowledging her. She chatted me up saying yes she was filming with Owen Wilson on a film called Wonder. At one point she got a call on her phone and she took it. I was busy organizing her purchase when all of a sudden she burst out laughing during her conversation and it was the Pretty Woman moment. She had a huge, toothy grin on her face, looked over and winked at me. It was classic! All in all, she and her assistant were so nice, normal and friendly. I’ve assisted a lot of celebrities during my career in fashion and makeup and she definitely stood out as one of the most genuine 😊

“ …looking cute …”. I loved that moment. Such a simple thing but how wonderful to witness a woman being so kind and loving to her younger self like that. Whenever I watch Julia in an interview a line from Notting Hill comes to mind: “I absolutely and totally adore you and I think you’re the most beautiful woman in the world and more importantly I genuinely believe, and have believed for some time now, that we can be best friends. What do you think?” She just seems like so much fun and so down to earth.

Wow, she’s absolutely lovely and I LOVE these menswear looks and the phenomenal formals. I really appreciate that she was honest about how terrifying it is to face a wall of people with cameras, I hate that for her.
