Great instrumental, love the out of this world sound effects and the thumping, funky, slightly haunting beat. Max Martin is truly a master songwriter and producer. I get the feeling that in order to truly appreciate Max's songwriting style, you have to listen to the instrumental tracks

in music theory, it's called a neapolitan chord. I won't go into much of the detail of what makes it sound like that, but in essence, it's a chord that is just half a step from the tonic ( the main note of the song), which is what makes it so tense. It's just so close yet so far.

Probably the first song recorded for "Britney" in February 2001 and probably sounded like this circa April 2001, before the album was released in November. In June 2001, Overprotected was supposed to be the first single for Sep 2001 release, but Britney met the Neptunes in July '01 and recorded Slave and Boys (Janet rejected demos), changing her mind from Overprotected and made it single #2. It's very ironic the parallels for both Britney and Janet, where Britney wanted the first song (Overprotected) recorded to be the first single for her self titled album *Britney* , just like Janet Jackson wanted with *If* in 1992 for her own self-titled album *janet.* due in 1993. Just like Janet, who went in March 1993 with a more sultry and smooth last minute recording as her chosen lead single (That's The Way Love Goes), Britney in August 2001 went with newly recorded Slave 4 You over Overprotected. Both "If" and "Overprotected" were both signature style songs for both women and the first recorded for their 3rd mega albums, which both got ditched at the end for less traditional, image changing songs. It's fascinating how they both share that commonality.

It's an evolution in the lineage of Baby One More Time - Oops - Overprotected. They all wanted Overprotected to be the first single off Britney, months before the album came out. Back in June 2001, Max Martin had just finished mixing this final track and presented it to Britney while recording in NYC on INAG,NYAW. This was the first track she recorded in February 2001 for the album. Only a few weeks later in July, she met Pharrell and she recorded Slave 4 U. She mentioned in an interview that her plan originally was to release this as the first single in August 2001, but working with Pharrell changed everything. In July 2001, this album release date was delayed to November 2001 to work with Pharrell and BT. After she worked with Pharrell, she changed her mind entirely and this song was no longer the first single, because she didn't want an Oops I Did It Again II or Baby One More Time Part 3 sounding song. She wanted to reinvent her image and could see how teen pop was declining. Which is why she held off on Overprotected for USA, focused on the ballad INAG,NYAW instead for Crossroads promotion, and ordered a remix of Overprotected for the spring of 2002. The problem she had with the sound on original Overprotected, was that all of her songs by Max Martin recorded in the late '90s for first two albums and none of them in the 2000s. The biggest and next best producer with a powerful sound like Max willing to work with her on short notice was Pharrell, ironically through NSNYC (Justin). She loved this song, because she gave guiding input (ghostwrote) and she recorded it as a demo in February 2001 before filming Crossroads. She finished the song in April on a second trip to Sweden during filming of Crossroads. Unfortunately for her, she just felt it was a repeat like how Mariah Carey's Dreamlover/Fantasy/Honey/Heartbreaker sounded the same.

It's all pieced together, but it's pretty much the story of how Britney Spears killed this song as the first single off the Britney album, to drastically mature her image as an almost 20 year old. This song was her first Max Martin single, recorded in the new Millennium/2000s, as all his album compositions on Oops were still recorded in the 1990s (like BOMT) and had what she now considered (in July 2001), "dated and fading 90s teen pop sound". I loved it regardless, even if she started snubbing Max Martin right after that (until If U Seek Amy).

@@nwezetx1 personally overprotected is my favourite Britney song but I wonder if the album was going to be called Overprotected just as the first two albums had their max martin productions as the first singles which were also the title tracks. You probably know better but by calling it Britney it’s was a sign she was growing as an artist and wanted to make more r and b at the time instead of teen pop which we know was dying
