What lesson?
@WooWooGirl
@WooWooGirl Ай бұрын
She certainly did. I would like to think that Susan taught Simon Cowell something he would never forget. It's not about appearances. All of us could use a refresher these days. I also noticed after Susan's appearance...that Simon became much more kind and interactive with audiences than he used to be...as I watch him on AGT right now. I look forward to Britt's brain blown after this performance.

This song depicts her life's story. If you actually go back and read the lyrics as she sings it, you will hear why the passion is so real in her voice. Her back story is that she stayed home to take care of her mom instead of pursuing her dream. Everyone in her village knew who she was and her talent. They were not surprised when she made it to the finals. In the lyrics, the most profound phrase that so explains her is "my life has killed a dream I dreamed." She was later diagnosed with a form of autism but her village came together and helped her cope with all the stardom she was getting by keeping her in a routine, allowing her to remain in her family home, and not treating her as the star she is in order to help her thrive with her gift. She owns a mansion she can not live in, she moves around her home town as she has done for many years, and her childhood friend is her assistant who keeps her routines, schedules and does her hair and makeup daily. She has a therapist I believe that follows her on tours to help her cope with the stress of performing. She has done very well once diagnosed and treated.

My only critique of your summary is an interview she gave where she said before this performance no one in the village wanted to talk to her and the local children commonly threw rocks at her house for fun. Other than that you are spot on, she is a treasure and nowadays is fiercely protected by those who used to ignore her. Love this woman to death, what a talent!

@@helenetrstrup4817 And what a loss that would have been for the world. It is human nature to judge people by appearance, but that is a natural tendancy we have to constantly keep in check.
@helenetrstrup4817
@helenetrstrup4817 Жыл бұрын
@@gwydion56 Truly, she would have been an unpolished gem, that would have been lost to the flow of time. Judging is in our nature, we assume so many things just from looking at something, and we judge based on those assumptions. We simply can't help it. The only thing we can actively do, is choose how we react to the judgements we make and whether or not we take an active part in correcting or confirming said assumptions without coming across rude or patronizing. It's like seeing an overweight stranger eating an ice cream. We can see they are overweight and assume a lot of things about their life. We make the judgement that the ice cream is probably not the best choice they could have made for a snack. This process is happening without our consent in a mere moment. But as we busy ourselves with all of the assumptions and judgements, we forget to consider, that they may not be at fault at all for their size. They could have had prior medical conditions or they could have been dieting and lost 30kg in the last few months, and it's the first ice cream they have that year, for all we know. As for Susan here, at first glance she's a normal looking woman approaching her late 40s (in this video). Visually she is underwhelming and you write her off because you simply judge her "average", not to mention in the business I guess she would be considered old already. Of course there are artists out there who are older, but they are established and have a long track record (pun not necessarily intended). She is absolutely amazing for succeeding despite the obstacles life has put in front of her.

Several times in my life I have been shamed by how jaded even I could be. You can't tell by the less than attractive outside, or the unsophisticated personality, what gift God has bestowed on that person. She was only "robbed" of the win by being unable to deal with all the attention that overloaded her. In the final she was not able to bring her A game. Then after she came in second, she was afraid it was all for naught, that she had failed. She had a break down and then being isolated in a facility just exasperated things. She got better when her family came and got her and took her home. After she was feeling better, she and her family met with Simon. Part of the contract with BGT included rights for Simon's production company to hold her to a recording contract. Simon waved that away. He let her know that she could record in anyway that she was comfortable with if she wished to or walk away, no hard feelings. She wanted to record and so she did. Her first album sold over ten million copies.

Simon, released her from her obligations when it became too much for her also. It was discovered that she actually was on the autism spectrum, which is why she seems "off" socially. Simon help her talent be fine tuned, she had complete natural talent, but no real professional training. Had she been a kid today, it would've been recognized much sooner, and she would've been successful from the start.

You are correct that Simon did mentor her even though she did not win. Simon is brutally honest in his comments on the show but in the same breath, he also has compassion. He knew that with the right care, she could be and would be a super star! If you see his interviews about her, you can see in his face and hear in his voice the compassion he has, not just with her, but with many people.

Her aspergers once diagnosed, was helped with medication, the one-time victim of bullying that she endured most of her life is now a treasured member of her village

Susan Boyle is a successful Scottish singer. Boyle rose to fame after starring in the third series of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. Her debut album ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ was released in 2009 and became the UK’s best-selling album of all time. It also set a record for the biggest sales in its first week by a debut album. In her first year of fame, she made £6.8 million to release I Dreamed a Dream. As of January 2023, Susan Boyle’s net worth is estimated to be roughly $40 Million.

She sang in church. When she gathered up her courage to audition. That to me, was the greatest factor in her success. She has a good voice, sure, but so do lots of people, but her inspiring story coming to light in a terrible time in the world was the attraction. She was the female "Rocky" and like Apollo 8 was known as "saving" the terrible year of 1968, she had a similar claim to fame. You don't often see the clip from BGT where Piers Morgan tells her how she saved the world or words to that effect. She's a great talent but there was a lot more to the story.

All of these years later and this audition still has me in tears. God, I love an underdog story! There were a couple of lessons to learn from this: 1. Don't judge a person's potential based on their outward appearance 2. Continue to believe in yourself. I think that Susan came across as fully confident in her talent, but (as Amanda said) not a single person in that audience took her seriously, until she started singing. We miss out on amazing people, when we decide that we already know everything about them, before we have gotten to know them.

Legend says that Piers had to eat crow, Simon's heart grew three sizes that day, and Amanda's chair had to be squeegeed. It CERTAINLY changed the trajectory of the entire show. IF they had had a Golden Buzzer, she would have had it for sure... the debate is who would have given it to her first.... LOL Thankfully Susan got to sing a couple of times with Elaine Paige!!! How F-N cool is that!!????! Subbed for your AWESOME reaction. Very Thoughtful. (...and I know, my comment may be a bit too much, and get deleted, But I stand by it none the less.)

Here she is now finally getting to do so...is so heart warming & heart breaking!!! I hope all her dreams come true!!! She deserves it!!!

@@Farmer_Dave I did not feel threatened and I am nobody's victim. That is your narrative, because it suits you. However, if you tell me to watch what I say, then you are patently attempting to intimidate and quell me. That is your prerogative but all it does is amuse me. Jesus (much like the other prophets) was supposedly all about love; Love to your friends and to your foes. If you actually adhered to his gospel you would show me love and concern, not rancour and defensive bitterness. You see, I reckon if one actually lived by his tenets, then you would not go far wrong. (naturally I don't believe he was who he claims he was, but then I don't believe in father christmas, either) Meanwhile you are right in that I did not have to react to your initial post. Normally I don't, even if god is invoked. In this case, though, you had no actual point to make or insight to proffer. Instead you wantonly hijacked the topic as any old excuse to peddle a fantasy that you buy into. I am not here to tell you not to go with that fantasy. Whatever gets you through the night is fine by me, but forcing it down other people's throats is simultaneously crass, and kind of desperate. I was stimulated to respond. I stand by it.

If you're interested & curious, later in Susan's new career she actually sings with her idol Elaine Paige (one of England's greatest female singers). A few weeks later a cell phone salesman Paul Potts arrives in a wrinkled suit & tells them he wants to sing opera. Simon rolls his eyes again. Another moment of magic that was equally stunning. She’s my inspiration when I’ve given up hope. Im a singer/musician/composer/artist. A long time coming for her, she’s an exercise in determination. I’m grateful to her. She has many recordings, she’s done beautifully despite setbacks, and it’s still a thrill every time I hear this. I’m particularly interested in your perception of the youth in her voice. I hadn’t thought of it, but I have an experience from 40 years ago that compares: I went on a date to hear Ella Fitzgerald live at 75 years old. I closed my eyes and heard the same voice as the 22-year-old Ella from old kinescopes. We were so thrilled we went out of the theatre straight to the box office and bought tickets for the second show - $75 each, 40 years ago - and listened all over again. I’ll never forget it, just as I’ll never forget this audition. Listen to her cover of Wild Horses. It’s powerful. Thanks for being perceptive enough to know she’s special right off the bat, and not falling into the cynicism trap. You’re right. We all need to learn to take people as they are, as they come, and look for their gifts. Thanks for sharing.

Britt, I love your reaction to Susan's performance! In every video reaction of this song I've watched, the host has pointed out the ageism and sniggering and judgement of Susan's appearance from the judges and the audience, and rightly called it out. As a kid growing up in the UK, I remember the terrible ageism, racism, ableism, (Susan has learning disabilities) sexism, homophobia, and every other ism you can think of, and as I got older, I've witnessed how every one of these things has been called out and condemned, to the point that they are now criminal offences in certain circumstances. I've watched as each generation of young people have brought a fresh and greater compassion for their fellow man, and applied it to how they know other people have the right to be treated. I've also seen how our young people are fighting for that compassion and care to be shown to the very planet we live on, and I know that when the time comes, I can go to my rest knowing that because of our young people, our world is in great hands.
