(Chuckle) My first wife died in 2013. I loved that woman more than I loved myself; but it was 23 years of a wild up and down roller coaster ride. I certainly could have missed the pain. But then I would have missed the dance. Thank you, Sivi.

This song came out shortly after my first husband passed away, I could have missed the pain but I wouldn't have our daughter, my daughter is my Dance. I saw Garth in 2016, had a sign that said my daughter is my Dance, while Garth sang "The Dance" he read my sign, pointed at me, held his hands up in the air like he was holding a sign, then put his hands on his heart for me. Best experience at a concert EVER!!

@@tkhorn5087 I didn't watch completely to the end. But, right after the song was over, she claimed that "the meaning" of the song was.... The official video starts out with Garth saying that he's heard many different ideas as to what this song means. He lists a few short ones that he has read. He agrees that many people will find different meanings. Then he gives his meaning of the song right before the song and video begin. As I stated, the video is very touching, although it mostly consists of deceased people that meant a lot to Garth, and most should have a lot of meaning to everyone.

@@darrinlindsey my guess is she is young enough she wouldn't recognize most (or all) of the people in the video - and likely not have the emotional attachment to them that old folks like me do even if she did - but it would have been interesting to see 🙂

"What a real thing that song was." You nailed it, Britt. It touches my heart every time I hear it. I lost the love of my life 7 years ago to cancer. As hard as the loss hits, I would NEVER give up the time we had together. She made me a stronger, better man and gave me the sweetest memories. You should also react to Skylark, "Wildflower". It is close to the story of her life and was played at her service.

I know you said you aren't a fan of country, but perhaps you should check out Gary Allan. I would recommend "Best I Ever Had", which is a cover of Vertical Horizon's version which isn't country, and then "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)", "Life Ain't Always Beautiful" and lastly, because I kinda think you might like it, "Smoke Rings In The Dark". Gary also did covers of Del Shannon's "Runaway" and Tom Petty's "Breakdown" that is pretty incredible.

This song has touched so many people so deeply. You should watch one of the live versions from when he did his UK tour. He would go out and sit in the middle of the audience, and they would sing the song with him. It's amazing. On a personal note, I usually don't share like this on social media, but I feel like someone needs to hear this. This song came out when my son was only a few years old. When he was 4 he got Rocky mountain spotted fever. We came very close to losing him. Life flight to children's, having to resuscitate him several times, five weeks in the hospital, wide spread brain damage. Well fair to say there is far more but you get how dire it was. We made it through. His life after was never easy. He struggled in school and life, but never quit. At age 12 he found music. He learned to play the Bass guitar, along with 9 other instruments, he learned poetry and won contests, he earned his black belt in taekwondo, and he earned his eagle scout. After highschool he toured with several bands, and has been in music videos ECT. I asked him once if he could go back and change being sick and all the pain and struggle he went threw. He told me no, because he is happy with who he is now, he loves his music, he is proud of what he has accomplished, and if he changed that one thing he wouldn't have become who he is, he may never had found his love for music. Sorry for the long post. Just thought someone might need to hear that right now.

This is Garth Brooks personal favorite song. He ends every concert he does with it. Its nearly his most popular but still quite a ways off from the popularity of Friends in Low Places. Two facts I love to point out. 1.) Garth would tell venues to NOT sell tickets to the front row. Especially if the venue charged seat pricing as most do instead of flat admission. They would agree because.....hes Garth effing Brooks..... then at the beginning of the show, he would tell all the people in the back row to come fill the front row. 2) He did 9 concerts in 9 m nights in Kansas City. This after not touring for over a decade as his kids grew up. To raise donations for wildfires that were insane that year. He sold out all 9 concerts with 10s of thousands of attendees....AND tickets to movie theaters broadcasting it live all over the country on the final night, in under 30 FRIGGIN MINUTES. Nobody concerts like Garth......nobody.

I saw Tony Arata on a TV interview once. He wrote this song when he and his wife were living in a small rented house outside of Nashville. He wrote it in a small laundry room. He tried to sell the song but got no takers He and Garth were doing the same open mics and neither he nor Garth were famous at the time. Garth told him that if he ever recorded an album that that song would be on it. He did and it was. Garth knew that it was a very special song. So do the rest of us. I still remember the first time I heard it. Thanks for playing it.

This song brings me back. As a woman in my 40's and more mature, this is how I feel about those high school relationships. We all thought we'd die, with those hard breakups. But, now, we can look back and smile, remembering the school dances and handholding. Not the heartbreak of the crush.

@@brittreacts Thank You So Much. I truly do love your reactions. You are definitely the most energetic, funny, and happy Reactor that I watch. You are also a very beautiful young Lady and I love that you admit that you are a Christian and at the same time you'll talk about the panty dropping club. Lmao 🤣🤣🤣

Garth Brooks is truly a modern day Legend. I am pretty this was his fourth song ever released. This song was iconic for sure.

The dance was written by Tony Arata who has written a bunch of Country hits. The only reason I'm mentioning this is he is from where I live in Savannah, Ga. He's a really cool laid back guy and an amazing writer.

I always like to mention the actual songwriters. They deserve a lot more credit than they get. And I live in Garth Brooks country, two hours from his hometown of Tulsa, OK. But the songwriters deserve credit for what they do.

Always love me some Garth, as a fellow Okie! My grandfather died May 3, 1995 and was laid to rest on the 5th. My grandmother had this song played as well as George Jones He Stopped Loving Her Today. What made it harder for me is that after the graveside services I had to rush home to get dressed for my senior prom. Then about two hours in, the piano that starts this song hit. I collapsed it was very hard to deal with I still to this day get choked up when this song plays.

I am going to share this poignant story with the world. I am from Spain and I live in Mallorca. In 1996 I was 26 and about to go and live In South Carolina with a family when I was enjoying Garth Brooks songs and specially "The Dance". In the summer of 1996 I arrived to Conway, near Myrtle Beach and I stayed with this wonderful family who had just had twins and needed the help of an au pair. That was me. My english was poor but I managed. I was not prepared for what was going to happen though. When I met the twins they were only three weeks old. Tiny, beautiful, delicate, pure. I had never taken care of babies but I became her second mother during the day while the parents were working. For some reason I don't understand, although I loved both of them profoundly, I had an special connection with the boy, Glenn Ross Gangi. I used to put this song "The Dance" and dance it with him during my stay, which was a whole year. When I had to live the USA I was so sad and miserable I couldn't bear the pain. My heart broke into a million pieces having to say goodby to the twins, specially my little Glenn Ross. I have always wanted to thank him because I could never become a mother but thanks to him I could experience the love that a mother can have for a child. I found them one day on facebook and they are gorgeous so I am happy that I did something important for that family. I am proud I could be a mother for one year thanks to them and yes, when I listen to this song I can feel my heart is still broken because I can't dance with that baby anymore. Thank you for reading this, I love American people, you treated me really well and I miss being there. Wish you the best to all of you.❤

Good and bad are synonymous...you'll never know or appreciate the good if you have never experienced the bad...and experiencing the bad just makes the good that much better. Love the reactions as always, beautiful song :) Oh and also...my favorite GB song of all time would have to be "She's Every Woman". Seems like most of his stuff (other than live performances) get scrubbed from KZfaq quite diligently. 100k in no time, easy claps :)

This song can relate to the loss of friends and those loved ones we have all lost. In the official video the imagery of JFK, MLK, Lane Frost, John Wayne, and others will bring a tear to even the most stoic folks. Even though Garth retired at the height of his career, these songs are still played everywhere.

Truer words ... the greatest gift of life is love it also brings us the most pain. In time that love over comes the pain and we can embrace the memory of our dance. I'm coming up on 39 years since my world abruptly stopped. I still think of her every day and grateful for our nine years together. My only regret we waited on a few things for better timing ... to anyone who reads this ... DON'T!
